I asked this in the ECM thread, but it kind of got lost in the shuffle.

How exactly DO new ECM flashes find their way into the dealerships' Digital Technicians? Is it a physical card that needs to be swapped into the handheld unit, or are they perhaps in some kind of docking cradle and get updated real-time?

I ask because honestly I feel my dealership is just blowing smoke up my ass about this and generally giving me the run around because they don't want to deal with it. I've already caught them out once in a blatant lie, so it wouldn't particularly surprise me - just keep me from ever stepping foot in there again...and I'll be writing a letter to their management/owner (I'll be civil, I swear!).

They are downloaded from H-Dnet.

Thanks, Court. That's kind of what I was expecting.

...time to call a different dealership and see if I can't get my UlyXT reflashed.

Check with the Michiganians . . . . it's not like we've not got plenty of tribal knowledge resources in the area.

In addition, if the dealer is stumbling with it there are TONS of resources within Buell. Another great resource is Chris "Moose" at Liberty, he's walked a couple dealers through issues.

Be smarter than the dealer and be mindful that what your bike needs is not "usual" for them . . . they may do 3 or 4 it's not like a recall on a FDXQRST or something.

Some folks, when faced with something new that may make their technical competence look less than ready for prime time employ countermeasures.

See if you can help them, it not call on the local Buellers and get some direction. Any problems. . . let me know.

I'll be calling Detroit H-D this week. One of my fellow Michiganians that I ran into at Homecoming bought his XB9SX there and seems happy with the place, and one technician in particular.

I know that something like a post-release ECM reflash isn't an everyday occurrence, and when I first brought it up with them and they responded that they knew nothing about it my reply was, "Yeah, I didn't really expect you to, but I assure you it's out there." One of the service techs spent about a half hour on the phone while I waited patiently and then told me that he'd look into it for me, and to talk to them again. This was when I went in to ask after the headlamp replacement for my 'bolt.

The next day I came back on the Firebolt so they could take down my info and get the headlamp process going, and asked about it again, and was told that they were still looking into it. I even gave them the software number of the reflash. Well, OK, whatever. I'll ask again when I bring the Firebolt in to have they headlamps replaced, that'll give them a week or two to find out what's up.

I had my lamps replaced a few days ago, and was told they were waiting for a card with the flash on it. This contradicts what I'd heard elsewhere on the board and what you just told me regarding how new flashes are loaded into the DT.

When I had the lamps replaced, I was doing a quick inspection to make sure everything was tightened up, ziptied up, etc and checked the function of the lights and noticed that my high beam was very white, while the low was very yellow. I asked if they had replaced the bulbs, and was assured that they were brand new, right out of the box. I turned them on and pointed out the color irregularity and noted that that was how it was before, since I had long ago replaced my high beam with a different, much whiter light bulb. Again he assured me that they were both brand new. When I got home I removed them and lo and behold they're the same bulbs that were in there before.

Now...the guy that's telling me this is the service writer, not the technician - but my opinion on the matter is, if you don't know, don't lie and tell me what you think I want to hear. Tell me you don't know, but you'll find out. I don't know a lot of things, and I don't expect everyone else to know everything either, but don't lie about it. That's simply unacceptable.

That was entirely too much typing to explain why I'll just patronize a different dealership. Detroit is about 25m farther away than this place, but hey, that just means more time on the bike, right? ; )

Best bet to find a reflash is to have the bike present, and plug it into digital technician II. At that point the computer will read the bike information (VIN, build date, etc) and the technician can flip through a couple screens and see the code for the current ECM program, and it will show "available" ECM programs below that.

The paperwork showing a new ECM flash is *very* well hidden - I've looked. Plug-n-search with the bike has worked best for me. If the service desk is hesitant, mention you think your check engine light came on a couple days ago and you want to make sure (real quick) there's no problem - if they have time to check it out for you please pretty please : )

I still haven't managed to get it done, mainly due to time constraints. I simply do not trust the closer dealer at all anymore and don't wish to give them anymore business of any type, and the next closest dealer is a 35mi ride (all city, otherwise I'd welcome it).

I shouldn't have to wheedle to get this done, and to be flat-out lied to about how flashes arrive is simply inexcusable. It SHOULD have been done before I even GOT the bike. Hooking a bike up to a DT, checking for residual codes, and ensuring the electronics are up-to-date and up-to-snuff should be part of the freaking DELIVERY PROCESS.

...hoping for next week. The surging at lower RPMs/steady throttle is getting worse. I'm going to reset my TPS this afternoon to see if that helps any, perhaps it has started to get broken in by now and needs a tweak.

So it has nothing to do with some old guy wandering into the dealership in a long raincoat on a sunny day?
