Hello everyone, I just bought a 05 xb12 it has almost 5k miles on it now. When the bike is idleing I can hear a knocking noise coming from the engine. I used the ghetto stethescope method of putting a screwdriver up to the engine and putting my ear on it. It seems to be coming from the right side of the engine where the logo is designating what engine. I can only really hear it at idle and and not when im driving. Any input would be appreciated

The right side...a.k.a. where the pushrods are?

Buell engines 'suffer' from a rather rackety valvetrain. Likely that is what you're hearing, in which case it is nothing to worry about.

...may I ask what, if anything, you rode before? It's only relevant in the sense of determining how noisy your previous rides may have been and its impact on what you consider to be 'normal' engine noise.

My first impulse said "primary chain", but that's on the other side....?

I had the same worry as you. Seems to be pretty normal. Just get a loud exhaust.

Ya its specifically on the right side, sounds like its coming from the bottom of the engine. Its rpm dependant. I used to drive a cbr600 which had alot of valve chatter. Im just a bit worried because if i heard this coming from a car I would think something is wrong.

Honestly, Ark, I think you're just hearing normal valvetrain chatter. Your CBR may have had a noisy valvetrain, but it was OHC...the ticking/knocking you're hearing is most likely the pushrods whacking against things as they open and close the valves. If you heard that from a car, chances are something WOULD be wrong, since the number of modern pushrod car engines is pretty slim pickings. ; )

If it really worries you, find another Bueller and compare engine noises. My XB9R makes quite a racket, with a very noticeable 'tick tick tick' corresponding to engine speed, and has for 6 years and 22K miles. =)

my '05 makes nothing but good mechanical sounds, when a nasty knock appeared (at 5K mi too), it turned out to be a loose crank nut. dealer retorqued to the new spec and the knock vanished.

hard to say without hearing it but if its bad enough where you want to shut the bike down, may be it. how loud is the knock? i certainly didnt need to get close to the bike to hear my knock, it was bad, although it seemed to be more pronounced on the left than right.

just some coins.. .
