Will hit my second service interval in about 500 miles, and am wanting to do the service myself. (I'm a cheap bastard that likes wrenching) Has anybody else done this? and if so... what are the lessons learned? Thanks! Ray PS. I have the service manual in hand. |

Did it, nothing remarkable. Vaguely remember oil/air filters... 3rd service due in a little over 1k miles here. Got the Service Manual before I need to check the valves, that's Good. Z |

I don't think that the 2nd service is any harder than the 1st one. |

The manual states what is to be done for the 6K service and as Harlan and Zac mentioned it is pretty much the same as the 600 mile service. According to the manual above, there is no need to replace the oil filter, but I did and I would recommend you do as well. Just common sense. I also removed the air filter and inspected it. In my case (it is dusty around here) it needed a good blast from compressed air to get the dust, rocks and unfortunate insects remains removed from it. Be mindful when you put the filter back on again. You can easily leave a gap on one side. I did and it is probably not a good thing. So when you put the filter back on look look for the following: 1) Set the edge down firmly on one side (left or right on the bike) 2) Gently pull on the filter with one hand holding it firmly in place on one side as you stretch it across. 3) Make sure you have the filter edge lip still seated in the groove on both sides by running your finger and tucking it in on both sides 4) Reattach the rubber bands. Here's a few more things that might make sense since you have the toolbox out anyway. - remove the tail section and check wiring connectors (mine came loose once) - check your front brake hose. It may have been abraded against the front fender - remove the belt covers. Check for debris that may be trapped under there. Also check to see that the lower belt guard does not rub against the belt. If so, put a washer under the rearmost guard fastener - Rocks and debris tend to collect in the airbox. I use a shopvac to vacuum it out of there. - I would give the wheel bearings a good inspection which would require removing the wheels. You have probably changed both tires and would have done so at that time. - Fasteners on the 1125R seems to be more willing to stay put compared to the XBs. I have not found a single one that has been loose. Probably not a bad idea to check them out though That's all I can think of at the moment. Have fun! |

Nice recap Asbjorn...I second the vote to change the filter. I didn't like the way it looked after the 2nd oil change (which technically the manual states is okay to use until the next change)--to me it seems silly to change the oil, but not the filter. |

Thanks for the info guys. Very nice writeup Doerman! but, my mistake, I said second service, meant third service (the valve adjustment) job. Ray |

The flat rate is 4.1 hours for the whole 12,000 mile service. ~$350 here in TN. |
