Hey Guys, Still working on the no-start problem I posted about once before. Will run on starter fluid, but dies as soon as it's gone. Fuel comes out of the tank at the petcock, but I think it's not getting through the jets. Before taking apart the carb, I figured I'd do a couple of other quick-fixes first, including upgrading to a NGK iridium plug and replacing Da Boot - neither of which seem to have had any effect. I removed the airbox and dropped the float bowl, but was then unsure on removing the jets. The bike is in the warehouse at my office, and I couldn't check my web sources so I left it as-is and came home to do some more reading. Now I see that messing with/leaving the float hanging is NOT a good idea. What's the likelihood that I've thrown the float out of calibration? |

Also, the diagrams I've seen of the carb disassembled show something that looks like an alignment post that fits in the float bowl where the gasket forms a little circle. When I dropped my float bowl, there was nothing there - just an empty hole. And there was nothing in the hole above it where that post would go. Anyone know what I'm referring to? |

Can't say for sure, however, It has messed me up several times - I got good at checking and resetting. First though I would take out and clean my jets and then screw them back in and see if that solves it - could well be clogged jets. Diaphragm is at the carbs top. My thought exactly, EZ. I nearly bought the Dynojet kit at my HD dealership when I picked up Da Boot earlier to simply swap out the jets, but opted against it for now since I'm still running a stock intake & exhaust. I guess just remove the jets and spray some carb cleaner through 'em? Suggestions on recalibrating the float while the carb's on the bike, or will I have to remove the carb for sure to do that? |

Make sure your float needle is clear and passing fuel. Do you get fuel from your tank to the end of the fuel line before it goes to the carb? Do you get fuel into your carb float bowl? |

Is your fuel fresh? Old fuel will not work. |

Actually I set the bike level - several ways to do this - jack stands under the pegs is one, I have a engine hoist and have used that - then I slid a small piece of 2x4 between cyl and starter using rags to firm up and make level the board, then I adjust the float - this way I didn't have to unplug the carb and later reset the TPS. Fuel does get to the bowl, and it is fresh fuel. Thanks again, EZ. How will I know if the float needs adjusting? Rough running? The only calibration method I've seen involved removing the carb. |

You still remove the carb - you just are not moving it far enough to unplug - the setting guide is on the main carb section near the top - can't miss it. EZ |

If it aint broke dont fix it! I wouldnt mess with the float unless you really, really, really, think you messed it up! Look through the slow jet. You'll see the holes and if clogged, you wont see through them. Main jets arent as easily clogged. "this way I didn't have to unplug the carb and later reset the TPS." Huh? Not sure how removing the carb necessitates TPS readjustment. |

As far as the 'alignment post', you may be looking at a carb diagram from a twin cylinder Buell/HD (which may or may not be in a Blast manual-twin diagrams can be found in the Blast manuals). The Blast does not have an accelerator pump and this 'alignment post' (pump spray) is not there. |

If you have fuel in the bowl, and it will start on starting fluid, you need to check for a tear in the boot or a clogged primary and main jet before you look to reset your float adjustment. |

Erik - people start unplugging all sort s of things when they remove the carb - my way just keeps it simple fast and direct - doesn't make it right - they say put it on a level bench - I say run a level across the board till its good and go to town - lol EZ |

Just trying to clarify on the TPS. You know how the web is-you'll have all sorts of people trying to reset their TPS just because they pulled the carb off. Not a good idea. I agree-take as little apart as possible-I dont disagree on the float adjustment. The bench way is a pain. |

Float function test: shut off fuel at petcock, remove float bowl and pour gas back in tank. open petcock... fuel should run out. lift floats gently - when they get pretty much level, the fuel should stop running out and the floats should stop going up, unless you push harder (but don't!). CAUTION: fuel is HIGHLY flammable! |

The float shouldn't be bothered at all by hanging - mashing it in either direction will mess up the adjustment, and mashing it upwards will damage the inlet valve if it has a rubbery type tip - that's probably why "leaving it hanging" is discouraged, and also because dirt can get in when the bowl is removed. As you're wanting to change jets anyway, take them out and make sure they and the emulsion tube are not clogged, and use fishing line or a bristle out of a nylon brush to check/clear the little holes above the LS jet, just downstream of the throttle plate. Make sure the throttle is adjusted (idle screw, on throttle cable bracket) to where the plate is not resting against the bore - it should be just slightly cracked open. You can try opening it a little (tighten screw), but be sure to count turns so you can put it back if it's not the problem. Twisting the throttle a wee bit would give the same effect, but is hard to do consistently. |

So I pulled both jets after work today. I could see light through both, but there was some build-up on both, so I thoroughly sprayed them out with carb cleaner & reinstalled. Also turned on the petcock with the bowl still off, and fuel did drip from around the float. Had to "jet" to meet family for dinner, so I didn't get a chance to button it back up & try to crank it. Will say a prayer & try it out tomorrow after work. |

With the bowl off the fuel should come out with a pretty good flow. You may want to take your float needle valve assembly out and look to see if it is plugged with something like a piece of rubber or gunk. |

I just didn't open the petcock completely yesterday. When opened fully, fuel does pour out. Now I just have to wait another 6 or 7 hours to reassemble & try to fire it up. Wish me luck, guys. |

WOOOO HOOOO!! She lives again! I think it was just a gummed up jet. Fired up right away today. One last problem - now I have the hop-up bug. Now that I know how easy it is to remove the jets, me thinks a rejetting & new exhaust are in order. The K&N is already on the way and did the EZ air box mod today too. Now I just need to figure out how I'll explain the extra few hundred on the next credit card bill to the wife .... |

Definitely helped, Gear. Service manuals are OK, but nothing's better than words of experience. |
