Hey Guys...ever wonder what kinda seal pukes in the 16.5" Showa?
I did....sooooooo...
I split a dead one up...
Heres the inards...I couldnt get the seal out as there is a tiny snap ring, and my eyes arent slanted enough to get the little
f..cker out...But its not a very big seal , so no wonder in a short time they puke...

I'm wondering if my shock is puking... On the way to the BMW Rally in Wyoming my M2L was blowing oil like crazy. But the engine oil was only down it's usual amount, and the gear oil barely down at all. I noticed the bike was riding better too, thought it had none of the usual "pogo stick" effect caused by blown shocks. When your's went, how much did it affect the ride?

Im sure it takes some time of leakin before the shock gets po-go-e on ya...I never road a bike with this dead shock on it...

Oldog/Wc...The shock was fairly hard to get apart, and damage to the shaft is hard not ta do...i cut the back end off as well to get the dampner out , cuase I couldnt get the inner snap ring out..

To be honest, its like it is made to not be serviced, but more of a one time assembly, then turf when done, like so many products now...

I found that the seal was actually rather small, and with the shock lying down, it wouldnt take much for the bottom side of it too wear and start to leak...

if ya want any specific photos, let me no before i turf it out.....Hb

can you get close ups of the individual items, layed out as assembled.

I maybe incorrectly assumed that if you relieved the spring tension and removed the spring & can that the damper assmb would be there for disassembley removing the rod is where you hit the wall?

I can do that...The hard part is to get the litle snap ring out...Its way down in there and nothing to grab...Once it is removed tho, the seal and dampner would come out without cutting the opposite end off..I will try to photo it ..
One cannot see the seal with the unit assembled....There is a dust seal that you can see from the back end that looks like it bulges out, and thats the one peolpe think is blown out...Hb

There is a shop in Stewartsville NJ called Rossini Racing. Their wrench Don can rebuild your Showa unit. They are not a Buell shop per se but I have never heard bad feedback about their work. My S1 was like a pogo stick when the shock went bad. www.rrpcyclestuff.com

Rebuild is assuming that it was not disassembled with cut off wheel

Seal removed and parts layout of shock...
The seal is very small and the dust seal gets deformed by one of the nuts,,,Hb

Looks like my OEM 1997 Shock that was on the RECALL LIST that "i" saw nothing wrong
with and did not replace was the better shock ... It has a 104,078.7 miles on it as of the last ride ...

Mine went south at 19K. It would bounce like a ball over any bump. If I hit a rise on the super slab I'd bounce for a mile. Really wish I had the coin for a new performance shock.

Great thread. Thanks for posting it!

I went through two Showas, a long one and a short one (both brand new), and was never pleased with the damping of either of them, even when they worked.

One of the things I hated about the Showas was the harsh high-speed damping. No matter how much I lessened the compression damping, it still felt over damped on square edged bumps. Right before my last Showa gave up it's supply of oil, I noticed the rear was more compliant than usual. I suspect your shock is on it's way to damper heaven, B'grrrl.

I hope I never have run a Showa again...

Ive got a new 14.5 on my S2, a 16.5 on the RS...A 14.5 on the S3 and one of each for spares...The Xb9r is totally different , so i suppose Im good ta go for a bit hopefully...LOl..Hb

I would take the spring, I have had some trouble with the sag after a rebuild and would like to have a spring to try.
