I have been searching the archives and quizzed my local HD dealer but can't seem to get a definite answer. What weight fork oil do I need for my Ulysses. Type E is spec'ed, but I would rather not but a fortune worth of pint bottles at the HD dealer. There is a BMW/Ducati dealer local and I can get multiple weights from them. Also, did I read the manual correctly, 18oz per leg? Thanks all, DougM | ||

I don't know what weight "type E" is either...I just bought some Spectro Heavy Duty Type E for $8.00 a qt at my "independent" V-twin parts dealer. I measured the oil on this change to the 4.45 inches from top of fork leg and it took 19 oz. of oil.. | ||

Hey Guys, The Harley type "E" oil is 10 wt. If your comp and rebound adjustments are currently maxed out, you can use a 15 wt oil to allow you to open up your adjusters to get some range back. Don't use the Harley SE heavy oil, it is 20 wt and will make your forks too stiff on the little bumps and road irregularities. mike | ||

Hi Guys, In addition to Red Line, several other manufacturers also list the type "E" as 10 wt. Scooter's documentation is similar to the other OEM's. DougM, be sure to fill the forks to the correct level from the top when they are compressed and the spring is out per the service manual. The 18 oz per leg is an approximation only. mike | ||

I would definitely suggest buying a fork oil measuring tool if you change the oil. Getting the oil to the proper level is a very important factor. I would go by fork oil level before i would just go pour 18oz in each leg and call it done! | ||

what are the fluid amounts for 06 forks and 07 and up? The key is the springs in '06 and '07 forks. '06 springs in the forks: 113mm oil level from the top edge of the fork outer tube, must be very close to that measurement. Buy three bottles of HD Type E to be safe. '07 springs in the forks: 172mm oil level from the top edge of the fork outer tube, an allowance of +/- 8mm is acceptable but must be close between the two forks. Remember that this fill and measurement must be done with the springs OUT and the forks COLLAPSED to the bottom, damper rods installed of course (which don't need to be removed for the oils and/or seals change). Whatever you do, after measuring and topping off the fork leg oil, DON'T allow the lower stanchion to slide downward without the top parts fastened. It'll drop to the point of exposing holes in the tube and oil will spew everywhere, necessitating a refill and remeasure... DAMHIK...  | ||

Thanks for the info and tips! I'll be doing a fork oil change and 07 spring swap on my 06 Uly. Does it matter which was the 07 springs go it? Tighter winds at the top or bottom? | ||

I checked the 07 manual marked with the p/n ending in Y and it says 192mm. Is 172mm} an update or is my manual the old one? Thanks Rich | ||
