Dodge Tomahawk -- you can tell it's a starter bike because they designed it with dual front and rear tires...you know, like training wheels. Heck, you don't even need gear it is so safe...and if you look close they put on Buell's ZTL brakes too! Brilliant!  (Seriously, read the thread above -- covers this topic well.) Seriously, the wife just got her first bike, a Suzuki LS650 Savage and with it she got "The complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycling". As a starter bike they recommended the Ducati Monster 695, the baby monster. Their pick for BEST INTERMEDIATE BIKE.....BUELL XB9S! A Blast would be a good starter bike too, but the Duc would just be SOOOOO much more fun. | ||

Whoops! Forgot I posted an almost identical thread previously. I guess I should have stated that my brain heavily outweighs my wrist. If its a new(er) machine, I don't hot rod it until I am comfortable riding it and have "learned" it. I'm leaning towards the "9"ers as I have heard great things about them. Matt | ||

Other than the MSF course's collection of ~150cc bikes, I had never been on a motorcycle at all before my CityX. Got a little over-confident on the ride home, and she popped a little (teeny-tiny) wheelie going into third after about the 4th stoplight to let me know she'd kick my ass if I didn't keep it conservative. | ||

Phio, Im sorry but I got to call bullshit. There is no way even remotely possible that you popped a wheelie by mistake going into third on any buell xb without a turbo or noss. Thats just not the way it is... Thats like saying that you got behind the wheel of your geo prism and mistakenly power slid through an intersection on dry pavement when you shifted into third, just to let you know that itd kick your ass if you didnt keep it conservative... PLEASE!... now dont get me wrong, I love my xb! I just cant stand it when people make them out to be crazy unbelieveable wheelie prone monsters when they are far from it. unless you are dumping the clutch in first gear you dont have to worry about unintentional wheelies on a buell xb... period... ok now i feel better  and for any who disagree ... well you are fooling yourself but whatever dont hurt me..., again I love the buell xbs but I wish ppl would quit making them out to be more than what they are in the power / wheelie department! | ||

well, I'm not intentionally BS'ing... this was last month after all, and I'm still quite new. However, the bike has been modified (according to the mech at the dealership which I do not frequent... so take that however you will), bored out to something over a liter. Again, not knowing details is a good sign of dishonesty, but that's the internets for you. Arrowhead Harley in Peoria if that makes a difference to anyone. If anyone has spoke to a professional interrogator, they would probably be familiar with how stories will become exaggerated, hell, if anyone has friends they're probably familiar with that phenomenon, but I can say that I was most certainly not in first, and that the shadow of the front wheel was decidedly distant from the actual front wheel. I'm relatively certain I had just shifted into third at approximately 65MPH, at 7k RPM. If that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is only possible in second gear, regardless of the out-put of a Buell motor of questionable size, I would assume that you are correct, and I was suffering from a lack of judgment due to new-buy euphoria mixed liberally with being scared absolutely shitless. I should also add that I have not been able to even come CLOSE to repeating that particular... acci-stunt?... but as enthusiastic as I've gotten since my confidence has returned, I'm still very afraid of the red line anywhere under 5th gear. More editing: the dealer did not tell me about any modifications until the walk-around... the salesman knew nothing about it, and I had already purchased the bike. He did mention the previous owner was a very active member of the local BRAG something-or-other. I haven't seen signs of a local ANYTHING Buell related... but Phoenix is a big city, and the bike seemes very well cared for. (Message edited by phoi on July 13, 2008) | ||

unless you are dumping the clutch in first gear you dont have to worry about unintentional wheelies on a buell xb... period... I am going to have to slightly disagree with you. It's really easy to get the front tire up if you powershift 1-2. Now we aren't talking about some mega super stunt man wheelie here, only about 2"-3", but it does come off the ground. BTW I have a bone stock 12Ss. I do, however, agree strongly with you about the 2-3 shift. VERY unlikely. | ||

What oddly finicky people... Kindly point out any mistakes, but if you feel the need to go beyond that, keep in mind how inconvenient it would be to provide full video and commentary from 2-3 different and unbiased sources every time you related a personal story. It's not like I was telling the guy how to rebuild the motor with scotch tape and his own feces. PS, speaking of finicky, unless you're employed by starbucks out here, you're not getting a latte for 2.50. Find a good local cafe and you'll probably have more gas money by avoiding SB's. | ||

On another note, I have been a on a personal boycott of Starbucks since 1989. You go to Starbucks for good coffee the way you go to McDonalds for gourmet. But what do I know, I only live in Seattle MetroPlex, the home of generic coffee. I am off to the garage to find more tape and fecal matter. Theres a dirt bike I need to finish | ||

Ps The CityX is a great starter bike, not too much power to get away from you, but enough so that you wont out grow out of it in a couple of months. I know I love mine. | ||

i kinda skimmed over this thread and would like to say that my first bike I ever owned (beside the dirtbikes of my youth) is an 04 xb12R and i think its an awesome starter bike. If you have any previous experience on a bike so the basic things like shifting, balancing, turning and stopping are all under your control, buy whatever you want just push the limits slowly and stay within your comfort zone until you feel up to the next level. I was initially worried about a 12r for my first bike thinking im going to kill myself on this thing, but thats one thing that i give to buells above all other bikes if they do one thing exceptionally well it is that they make you feel completely in control and they are almost effortless to ride smoothly, safely, and comfortably while simultaneously pushing the limits of things you think a bike can do in a corner | ||

I'm a new rider, and I have a 12Ss. I'm finishing the Rider's Edge training today which means I just spent two days riding a Blast. I'm happy with my choice, but if I fit a Blast better I'd get one. Plenty of power and handle's well. If it's a looks thing, mod it and make it yours. | ||

I am told that some people dont find me funny, to them I usually reply, quit looking. Or the other extreme, they say I am funny, but they mean funny tetched or peculiar, not funny ha-ha. There is more than a subtle difference, but I suppose there is medication. PS for starter bike I always recommend the bike that you feel comfortable and confident on. That is a personal opinion that can really only be answered by oneself. Hell you can wreck and rack yourself pretty good on a cycle that is only powered by petals. Ride safe, ride often, but for cripes sake, go Ride! | ||

well put, thats the only reason i got my XB12. I went to the dealership and sat on one and it just felt right. the bars were in the perfect place, the pegs were in the right spot, the riding position suited my build and style to a "T" | ||

I just got an XB9R as a starter bike. Fell in love with it for the looks...but once I actually SAT on it, I was hooked. It just fit beautifully. Hopefully it will be a good choice. I have had some people tell me it is far too powerful to be a good first bike, and others (including a riding instructor) tell me that you learn on what you have, and as long as you ride within your limits, everything will be fine. |
