"The CA evap deal is really a no brainer. Stop filling the tank to the top, leave it down an inch. Common sense for many of us" Yeah, thats fairly insulting! I had my BRAND NEW! Blast 600 miles before the charcoal canister shut it down. It will not start again for quite some time when this happens. Dont fill the tank to the top when its 100+ miles between gas stations (hopefully), with a slightly more than 2 gallon gas tank? The CA smog canister is bad news on the Blast. "caution severe injury or death can occur if left intact". Saro: While my 'small bike' experience is limited, I dont remember many being built with the 'full figured' male in mind. As I remember most have wimpy suspensions. I found my BRAND NEW! Blast very stiff in the suspension department and it handled 2 people just fine. Dude, though, you seem a little harsh? Bay area getting to you? I dont think you should have to defend your opinion, but I know many people read stuff off the web and take it for gospel. The next we'll hear (all over the web) is the Blast suspension is super soft. I dont think thats the case. |

Saro - are you in the SF bay area? - if so come on by and try both bikes - check the shimmed shock vs the Works, and tell me if it was worth the 20 bucks to have it shimmed at KC Engineering - where I usually go to get tires - I just bought a house in Antioch - it would be good to see another original Blastard. EZ & Erik- Not in NorCal. I'm living in Green Valley - but not the "Real" Green Valley in NorCal. It's a small town near Lake Hughes, Lake Elizabeth, etc. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=G reen+Valley+CA+91390&ie=UTF8&ll=34.620212,-118.413 842&spn=0.006657,0.017939&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr My nephew has a GS500. Many consider that a small bike. A starter bike. Certainly has been around for a long time. He has an 89 model - the first year I think. It has adjustable preload on the rear shock. I still think the inclusion of preload adjustment would broaden the range of riders (green or seasoned, male or female, skinny or tubby, short or less so) that the bike could accommodate. It's cool. It is the way it is - and it costs what it costs. Still a great bike from a great company with a great (albeit somewhat nutty) following. -Saro |

That part I understand - and yeah they could have shopped around a bit more on the shock - almost all the Euro shock companies sell two way shocks as a matter of course and with just pre-load - very few motorcycles carry no adjustment any more - if it had been sold over seas life would have been better, however, Hagon will do a custom 3 way for 425- the streetfighter crowd use them because of that custom feature - quality similar to Works - again in Euro though - though I hear they have one US distributer in NY - lol - still that price is at least 4 times a Blast shock, probably worth it. I run the Works on the other bike - made a world of difference in the handling to me - when I got it dialed in;0) Shimming the shock did wonders for the other bike as well in the city. Pitty too about not being closer - I really enjoyed our last ride together at SLO, Scotts gotten a lot better also - lol - EZ (Message edited by ezblast on May 24, 2008) |

I have not seen them but recently had some discussions of a similar nature with some friends. I didn't get the result I wanted but enjoyed the exchange of ideas. I am a huge Blast fan. |

I know what your saying, it just surprises me that so many on this board alone have independently pursued this idea, tells me there must be a good idea in there somewhere. EZ |

The merit of the idea is not in question, the business case is. How many Blasts would you be willing to build at $7,000 each and sell for $5,000? I'd buy your first one. |

I sent CW a letter - How you could overlook a motorcycle built with the beginner motorcyclist as the sales objective is beyond me. This bike has trained hundreds of thousands of beginners through both private sales and HD Riders' Edge courses - I am of course speaking about the Buell Blast. Almost every bike sold passes through countless hands and the majority just keep humming along despite newbe rider abuse. My personal dally driver had seen ten owners before me and still does its daily routine with out fail. A bike with the simplest maintenance schedule a motorcycle could have and perform, is ultra easy to ride and imparts nothing but good riding habits, and is a motorcycle that can daily do 60 to 70 plus mpg commuting with an ignition controlled top speed of 96mph. A bike that does not intimidate, but rather encourages developing riders' skills. Needless to say - I am a big fan of thumpers - especially this one and I am saddened that you - a magazine I highly regard - fail to recognize the great qualities this bike possesses. The other bikes mentioned are only seconds to this bike for the task of teaching the beginner to ride. Sincerely, Edward Zick - AKA - ezblast (Message edited by ezblast on July 24, 2008) |

Being as I've reached 6,000 and now the bike only splutters and stutters after running perfect for 5,999 -- das boot striketh -- I can only wonder as I await the part why, in 8 years, the Achilles heel for this great bike has not been fixed. I'm not a great mechanic and, had it not croaked in my driveway, I could have been left stranded. Without this forum I also would have been clueless.... |

By the way, my dealer had one boot in stock and it cost me $9.99, 7.99 after my Rider's Edge instructor discount. It cost more in gas to drive the car 80 miles to get it than the part cost. |

I recently got a new boot. Haven't put it in yet. It cost $9 something. They paid $11 and change to have it shipped from one dealer to the other. I think that, despite the frequency of boot failures we talk about, they don't seem to fail enough for any engineering to be done. I'm past 34K, after changing my first boot at around 23K. I replaced the first one because cracks were forming on the inside, but they hadn't gone through yet. I inspect my stuff every 1-2K miles, and I'm seeing cracks forming on the inside, but they haven't gone through yet. I'm running unsupported for something like 6-8K miles. My problems have been where the rubber meets the metal on the carb and the intake. |

Without this forum I also would have been clueless.... I think that is a key point. A lot of Blasts are out there as second or third hand beginner bikes. The people who own them aren't on Badweb, and they don't necessarily live near a Buell dealer. When the boot tears, it often isn't clear what is wrong. The bike just stops running, or runs poorly. |

Why the low idle, and the great price on the bike - Not sure...it ran like that since I picked it up last Saturday. First sign of a bad boot is a high idle, so they probably lowered it, then when the bike started cutting out they replaced the boot. Then the bike had your issue - oops time to sell it - and you got it like that - lol - Classic issue on the boot and why you can find some great deals on Blasts - EZ |

A new rider I know bought a red 03, spent hours fixing up his seat so it's great for touring (new foam, carving knife, recover) put on a windshield and a power outlet for his heated suit and nice bags. He's already called me twice to help him because he ran out of gas. When his boot dies I'll offer to fix it for him by buying the bike really cheap...... |

A cheep and easy update to the blast would be the XB head, and cam. Insted of haveing a new casting for the xb/ blast head, redesign the mount to work with the existing xb head. fuel injection is another eazy update. the only new parts would be the intake manafold and the ecu. next would be wider rims. how about the cityx lights and windscreen? |

Couldnt agree more! I've done the XB head, piston and cams. Great power, better mpg. An adapter mount for the head is very easy. Needs a new rev limiter though as 6500 rpm cuts the power band short (I'm running 7500rpm). B50/Pro Series cams might even work better (broader powerband-theoretical). Did I mention better mpg? Why cant we even have these parts listed as 'race only' performance accessories? (Message edited by gearheaderiko on November 19, 2008) |

I'd be happy with a ten year commemorative special edition Blast - an XBBlast would be perfect and probably sell every one of those - since the number would be limited any way - I'd be first in line! EZ |

the more i see other buell and compare it to my blast... the more i get confused...... how have soo many parts made for the "cheep" bike that are different then all of the other buells. useing the same parts through the entire product line would make everybike cheeper to produce. |

I have always felt the same way - the consolidation of parts would improve the Blast - all around, and rejuvenate sales and save Buell money. How could that not be true? EZ |

if they make it too nice, no one will upgrade. blasts are supposed to get people back to buy a real motorcycle. that said, i want one just like this. |

"just like this." was there supposed to be a picture attached? Doesnt matter how nice they make the Blast, generally no one in this country considers a 500cc anything a 'real' motorcycle. People will still be pressured to 'move up'. Just cuz I love saying this: Its super fun to see lots of bigger bikes passed on the track by a Blast. "Hey, whats that thing have 60, 70 hp?" No, 30! Not sure where 'moving up' got them?! |

I already have a completed EFI system for my Blast right inside my head. I'm just waiting for my brother (not holding my breath) to send me his extra 45mm throttle body so I can build it. Somewhere I have a piece of paper with preliminary schematics on the controller ... |
