So, got to looking at my intake today, since the bike is running rough again. It looks pretty messy to me, what would your guys opinion of it be?    | ||

Time to get a Catch Can... All that Crap is gumming things up... I've come to conclusion some bikes are worse than others.. Time for some Gum out... Good Luck... | ||

 here's mine $15 parts 1/2 hr labor....works like a charm. when you see the crap that comes out you won't believe you were throwing it back in your engine. | ||

I've noticed this as well on mine. Could this be the reason when I'm at about 80mph and when I twist the throttle to take off it kinda "sputters"? Doesn't want to go. Feels like it fights me. | ||

Connect the two breather tubes in the airbox to a "T". then take the third leg of the "T" and run some hose to a vented bottle (I used small plastic baby bottle). Some use a filter as a vent but I didnt have a need for it. | ||

Yup time for a catch can, I built mine for around 15 bucks as well. That coaking can also cause uneven idle and a sticky throttle. | ||

Shawn...Two questions. What size hose did you use at your "T" by the intake to connect the vent tubes? Also how did you route the hose to where in wouldn't get pinched by the inner airbox cover? | ||

Y'know, I tried one of those air compressor filters, and didn't like it. I tried to blow through the thing and practically couldn't! It really hampers the airflow, so I was afraid it really wouldn't let the crank case breath back and forth as much as it needed to. While I was running it, it collected almost nothing, despite the fact that my airbox had been a total mess previously. That just served to further my suspicion. Until I get a true catch can, I'm just sticking a filter on the end and letting it drip. Very EPA-friendly!  ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on July 14, 2008) | ||

It is a 3/8" interior diameter house. You should re-route it out of your airbox though and plug those holes that they come through. | ||

what i did when i realized i was getting some pebbles and stuff in my airbox because the intake is so open in the front...there is the little clip on cover that dresses up the plastic work on the intake. take that front piece off and get door screen..wrap tight and rivet it on...makes it look pretty and keeps the crap out...im speaking of the firebolts intake of course | ||

It did have a K&N filter on it with the racekit. I put it back to stock though. Ive got some parts ordered up to build the catchcan, and will use some carb cleaner to try and clean the gunk off of the throttle body and intake. | ||

On the Auto PCV kits some catch cans they still route one end back into the intake? I'm assuming you get more draw that way... Can anyone explain the advantages of either set up..  | ||

Shaun- That is slick! That's one of the best- engineered catch can setups I've seen. You actually used something designed to separate oil mist from air- brilliant! Ted- The advantage of having the engine draw a vacuum on the crankcase is supposedly keeping the crankcase clear of vapors (which consist of unburned gas vapor and exhaust gases). This keeps your oil cleaner longer which should help engine life. The disadvantage is that these gases contaminate the otherwise fresh, clean incoming air charge, resulting in slightly less efficient combustion and therefore less power. |
