Just wondering if anyone would be able to help shed some light on this. I have an 07' Uly with 1500 miles. When at operating temp I get a knock, but not when I let off the throttle, only while at a constant speed or accelerating. It almost sounds like something bouncing around inside the cylinder or something loose and rattling; have not been able to find anything. I don't have a ping or hammer banging on the motor sound, so it leads me to believe it is not detonating (sounds different too-slightly). I am using Mobile 1 20W 50, clean, just changed and NGK DCPR9EIX iridium plugs (dealer originally sold me 8s which did cause it to detonate). Any suggestions before I take it to the dealer? Tony Did the noise start just after the plug change? Look for loose brackets and other hard ware. Joe |

Well, at first I thought that it did so I bought some brand new stock plugs and put them in; still having the same problem. I don't remember hearing it before the new plugs though. I have check just about everything for loose hardware. I even padded the back of my horn incase is was vibrating on the headlight bracket. |

Sounds like the oil in you airbox has done its dirty work on your air intake and O2 sensors. Get the dealer to run a diagnostics check on your bike. He should be looking for the correct temperature to be displayed by the intake air temp sensor and the head temp sensor and the correct cycling of the O2 sensor. These three sensors are the key to getting the mixture correct. Also the static timing should be checked as sometimes it is out from the factory. |

Thats good info...something I never would have thought of. I did change my oil at the same time I put the new plugs in. When I went back to the stock plugs this weekend, I noticed some oil residue around the inside of the air filter. Took the bike for a spin to get it warm and checked the oil. The level was a bit high, right at the top of the hash marks. I assume that the timing is still good as it was checked recently as well, but I will check it again to make sure. Thanks Tony |

Well, the problem continues... After going over my bike with a fine tooth comb looking for anything loose and even removing the horn (so there is no possibility it could rattle), the knocking is still there. I decided to have the dealership take a look and they claim it is just the horn, obviously not the case. They also tightened the engine primary gear nut...just incase and claim they checked all sensors. When they took it for one last test ride, they said they couldn't hear anything. But it is still there... Timing is perfect and oil level is good. I guess I am at a loss and would greatly appreciate any other ideas. Thanks. (Message edited by tocramed on July 02, 2008) |

I've got an 04 xb12r with a little over 1200 miles on it and I'm hearing some rattling. I have the service manual but can't find anything about valves. Are they adjustable? Worked in a metric shop so I'm a little more familiar with their specs and adjustments for valves. Any info would be helpful! |

Valve train is hydraulic with fixed push rods and not adjustable rockers. Joe |

Hi Bad Karma, Assuming that the rest of the stuff that others already covered checks out O.K., i.e., timing, correct plugs,(particularly same throw length of the new spark plugs) no gas smell in the oil along with excessively high oil level, (which might indicate excess fuel getting past rings and thinning out the oil, thereby creating excessive wear and blowby) etc., than it sounds to me like you're experiencing classic symptoms of "wrist pin knock". There'a distinct difference between a knock on acceleration vs. deceleration. On deceleration, if the the wrist pin has any "slop", it's less likely to display a knock under compression loading of the piston. (at least until an advanced stage of wear) Since you said timing is correct, and the temp. is generally normal with no overheating and no "pinging" or "Detonation", This sounds like a possible culprit to me....... Good luck with your bike. I hope they figure it out CHEAP for you! Tracy |

Check your primary chain adjustment. With just 1,200 miles on it the primary chain needs an initial adjustment. Whenever your bike begins to sound like it's chewing gravel check the primary chain. A little loose is better than a little tight. |

Funny stories: Buell: guy complains that he hears a rattle at the steering head. Turns out his key chain fob is made of metal and is banging against the display. Roadking - guy complains of rattling. Turns out its his keys in the front bag. Same guy comes back 2 weeks later for same complaint -- we take out tools out of his luggage back and wrap them in a cloth bag. Noise is a tough one -- be patient and look for something simple or something that has changed... |

Thanks for the ideas...still investigating. I know without a doubt that there is no loose hardware or accessories. This is definitely something internal. I guess the best way to describe the sound would be similar to hitting two large hardwood dowels together. It is that flat, high pitched, knocking sound. As time goes on, it seems to be getting louder as well. I have been hearing from others that the 1200 motors are noisy and that is normal, but what noises should I be hearing? |

I second the primary chain theory. First time mine needed adjusting, I thought "What the bloody hell is that?" It made a random, lightweight clunking sound. All I could tell was that the sound was coming from below. After taking others' advice and doing an adjustment, I haven't heard it since. ~SM |

Tocramed, Any update? Your description of the knocking sound is exactly what my motor sounds like. Could it be an exhaust leak at the head? |

Hi Newbuellertoo, Not much new...had someone from the dealer (another Uly owner) take if for a ride since I was in the area and he told me his makes the same noise and always has. He has an '06 with 16K miles on it. I have not had time to check my primary chain, but it is definitely on my list. It doesn't appear to be an exhaust leak; did the paper test and there doesn't seem to be any air movement and it didn't turn black. I am no expert and this is the best way I know; does anyone know of a better "easy" way to test? This investigation has also been put on hold since I have been having some bad detonation problems. |
