First done 2/24/2008 with Aron. We were actually stopped 6 miles short by snow ( good times). From Sandy going north, there are a lot of technical downhill corners. I think we counted 4 or more 10 mph buggers. Might be more fun the other way. Very technical, scenic.
There is a park on Larch Mtn and a 1/4 trail to a lookout where you can see Jefferson, Hood, Adams, St. Helens, and maybe even Rainer.

I did the second half of this ride, Corbett to Larch Mtn. last week, July 3rd. still a bit of snow at the top, but not on the road. the gate is open. Tons of mosquitoes at the top.
There is some gravel on the road, mostly on the way down, but it's pretty hard to see, due to all the shade from the trees. be careful.
The technical, downhill corners mentioned by Brady come in the area near Bull Run, the trip up the mountain itself is much quicker.
Also, watch for wildlife. My friend hit a rabbit with his back tire up here, and his tire stepped out at least a foot! Rabbits are slippery on the inside!
All in all this is my favorite short blast after work. lovely view at the top! |
