While at the ROT rally in Austin I visited the HD dealer in Roundrock. I asked a salesman about gas mileage on the 1125R. He told me 55-60 mpg. When I expressed doubt he asked another salesman who said at least 75 mpg. Are these guys smoking the good stuff or what? I am thinking 35-40 at best.

i use an average of 10 liters per 100 kilometers, or 1 liter per ten kilometers, which works out to be around 23.5 miles per gallon. Im getting on average 185 kilometers to a tank before the fuel light comes on. That means about 115 Miles before my low fuel light. How does that compare to everyone else? Keep in mind im also paying 1.50 per liter, which is roughly 5.70 a gallon for 94 octane

Light came on at 129miles today. 2 miles later I filled up (making it 30.5MPG). The bike claimed 32MPG over that period (I reset at the last gas stop) and that was 50% city, 50% highway.

if my memory serves me correct, the worst i ever did was 126 kilometers to a full tank, which is about 78 miles. Keep in mind that was all either 220+ riding or non-stop wheelies...

haven't taken the time to ride it conservatively to see how it would do, but whats the point? its a toy, so i really couldn't care less of the fuel mileage i get

I took mine on it's first full tank of highway only miles (cruising speed of 65-90 mph) last Monday and achieved 40MPG. The split second you throw some city miles in the mix it is back down to a consistent 31MPG for me. I do not have the updated ECM software yet.

Sunny just bought an XT225 Yamaha single (dirtbike) - It can get 75 mpg on longer street rides - NOT a lot of dirt.

I'll have a hit of what he's smoking... pass it on!

Best tank on mine was 36mpg, all highway with a 10mph tail wind, 80-85mph and laying on my tank bag. Average about 30-31 in town.

I just did 34 mpg on the last tank, average of 70 mph on the highway, and about 25% of the riding was in town. I checked the instant mileage and at 65-70 it's right around that. At 60 mph, it jumps up to 50 mpg??? 5-10 mph difference and it changes that much? I haven't done a full run to see if I can squeak out that consistently, but I might try it sometime. I guess I need to get it flashed since it's hunting/surging at steady rpm's. Only have 330 miles on it, so kinda waiting for the first service or the next trip to the dealer.

Also, the fuel light came on at 4.5 gallons used, so I guess it's pretty close.

Best tank I've gotten was 36, mostly highway.
My average to 2900 miles was 29 mpg per the computer.
I reset it before my track day, and the computer told me I got 25 mpg and that figure is really close to correct.
I was impressed with that, as I was really pushing it up around redline a lot of the day.

As for the fuel light, I have run out of gas once. Light came on at 128 miles, out on the highway. Just pulling into town at 148 miles, started sputtering. Ran out at 150, a block from the gas station.

Last night i spent about an hour just doing 2nd and 3rd gear wheelies on a nice flat road near my work. Just when i stopped and headed to work my gas light came on. I rode to work, parked, then after work jumped on to ride home. I only got 4.5 km ( less that 2 miles) of the gas light being on and i ran out of fuel. Good thing this bikes light as me and a friend loaded it into the back of his truck and drove it to the gas station. I hope that the fuel splashing around caused the low fuel light to come on late, because i usually get near 25 kilometers on the low fuel light

38 is the best I've gotten and that's keeping it between 4500-5000 RPMs.

Well, I got the transmission/oiling recall done today. Got there 2 hours early to let it completely cool off so I could also have the latest ECM flash done. 6 hours later, I finally got out of the dealership.

On the trip there and for the previous 1000 miles, I have averaged roughly 33-35 mpg. The tech/mechanic didn't do the ECM flash because they couldn't find it on H-Dnet, even with the actual flash revision number from here, but on the return trip home, I got roughly 10 mpg better at EVERY speed range.
Previously, at 60 mph, I'd get about 50 mpg, at 70-85 mph, I'd see 33-35 mpg. I ran it at various speeds (60, 70 and 85 mph) and it was roughly 10 above the previous average. I was seeing 43 mpg at 85 mph (about 5000 rpm) and it was very consistent. At 60 mph, I saw 61-62 mpg. ????? Anybody got any ideas on this one? I get fuel from one gas station, 93 octane and haven't bought fuel from anywhere else.

I wonder of poor oiling in the transmission has been causing excessive drag leading to reduced economy?

( Not likely, but hey, it's worth a try... : ) )

My bike has 8K miles on it. Here's my report:

Commuting (City freeways 50 miles each way): 37MPG and 155 miles before reserve light comes on

Rompin' stompin' canyon riding: 27MPG

I got 2 MPG less prior to reflash

During the breakin period, the numbers were in the low to mid 20ies.

Only have 200 miles on it and for the most part I'm getting between 28-32mpg. Saw 52 on the readout, but that was just putterin' around.

I don't understand why the mpg is so low on the 1125r. You're thoughts?

My FJR with PC and full Dale Walker exhaust makes 131.2 hp at the rear wheel, weighs far more then the 1125R and gets 39-44 mpg.

I did 250 miles on Saturday and averaged 30 mpg. I didn't "really" rock on it so it's pretty close to accurate. I look at it this way.

Speed vs. good gas mileage ....... I'll take the speed any day I'm sure most of us would still my 11 gets better MPG than my 4 door Jeep Wrangler!

Posted in other 1125R thread, but what are we comparing the mileage to? What do you THINK it should be?

What does the RC51 get?
What does the TL1000R get?
What does the 1098 get?
What does the Aprilia 1000R get?

None of them are getting Mid to Upper 40's. They are getting low, mid or upper 30's at best.

I believe it to be a design characteristic of v-twins. Am I way off?

There are down tuned versions that get in the low 40's (V-Strom as detuned TL engine).

Well Fatty, The highest mileage I ever got was in a Twin, A Ulysses. 50-6- was normal and 65 was hit a few times.

My Hypermotard 08 1100cc will deliver tank after tank of 50mpg.

My 05 999 was mid 40's also.

all twins, all same driver "not nice"

My 08 FireBolt does not deliver what my past Buells have so I'm guessing part of this performance is electronic adjustments that Buell made for emissions?

Liquid cooled high performance V-Twin.

I exclude the air-cooled Buells.

The 1125R and the air-cooled Buells are no where near the same design.

Most don't get in the 50's from their Buells. I've never broken 50. Mid to high 40's.

I don't know why the Ducati's get better mileage, but I haven't seen any reports from the 1098 getting 40's and 50's on a regular basis.

Again, the modern 60* V-twins or 90* V-twins aren't getting the same mileage that IL4 bikes are. There are outliers. You have experienced a couple. Your experience does not an average make.

Is there room to improve? Completely. Is that improvement going to move the mileage into Uly mileage range? I doubt it.

If they could, the bike would have better mileage than any of it's competitors.

When motorcyclist tested both the RC51 and the 999, both were equally thirsty:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/roadtests/122_05 01_honda_rc51_ducati_999r/fuel_economy_handling.ht ml

"And memorize the address of every gas station on the way, because the Duck gets thirsty when you goose it. Restraint can coax 160 miles from the dainty 4.1-gallon tank, but a little debauchery can drain it in just 100. The RCcan be just as thirsty, but it carries more fuel."

I would hardly consider the 1100S tuned for performance at 90HP. More like an air-cooled Buell.

I have seen as high as 57mpg on my Ulysses if I'm just droaning on back roads in top gear. Mostly I see in the mid 40's.

But that's on a two valve, long stroke motor that turns very low RPM.

If you increase the bore and shorten the stroke, then there is far less time for the fuel burn to complete. Long stroke motors are more efficient, but are RPM limited due to the piston speed. To make power, you need RPMs.

The 1125 is most likely a big bore, short stroke motor.

Bore=103, Stroke=67.5

Yep a short stroke engine just like Chad described. What I remember from the older days, in order to get the cylinder to fill properly in an engine design like this you had to have more valve overlap. Meaning that both valves were open at the same time (to some extent) to allow the intake charge to fill the combustion chamber and, the burnt gas' to escape. This "overlap" while it will produce more power, has a tendancy to decrease MPG since some of the fuel/ air charge actually exits the combustion chamber. Heck the press was complaining about the 74' Ducs because of their gas mileage and then patting them on the back for the power (GO FU*KING FIGURE!!!)

That's the best I can remember from my flow bench days too many nights ago.
