Have you guys noticed more roadkill this year or is it me? It seems like last summer, I rarely remember seeing roadkill this time of year, this year is insane! I’m also seeing a lot more deer running around and have pretty regular close calls. Maybe once a week. Last night though, I saw 8 deer over the course of 6 miles of back roads on the way home from work, all alive and grazing too close to the road for my comfort. It really makes you think hard about riding too fast… | ||

Its a lot wetter around here this year as compared to last, thus they are staying near the roads as they are some of the dryer places(usually higher than the surrounding area)? I haven't really noticed anything down here though. Seems the bug population is less though-possibly again due to the rain and cooler weather. | ||

The only creature overpopulated here is mosquitos. I can't ride my bike 2 miles without having it look like it was Linex'd. | ||

James, it's the same way over here. More corn fed deer that you can shake a stick at. Rabbits, Coons, Ground Hogs thicker than flies. And all have to play in the road it seems. I even had a Goldfinch fly into me last night, He hit me in the boot...no more Goldfinch!  I won't ride at night over here because on the deer. Hitting one in a car bites, but hitting one on a bike could be all she wrote. | ||

Not just you Thump, I have seen several here in coastal NC dead on the road the carnage is waaaay worse this year, I have an HID head light so I hope that when I ride after dark that I can see them sooner (farther away) | ||

buell, our daughter mentioned to us yesterday how bad the skeeters are up there compared to florida. kinda like when we get the love bugs down there i guess. | ||

Funny(sorta)-On my way to pick up my kids there was a deer that ran in front of a honda accord. The deer hit the top of the accord's windsheild looked to go completely over the car and then get hit by another van. both drivers seemed to be OK as I went by but a bit stressed/freaked out, and the deer was definitely dead. It's not often I see it happen in the middle of the afternoon. | ||

Unreal the explosion of critters, anymore. My biggest riding nightmares revolve around deer, thankfully the loud, low-pitch sporty mill of my scoot warns 'em in advance. After periods spent out west, I am always shocked, upon return to NY, by the volume of roadkill we have, here. The way that roads aren't designed cuts up wildlife movement routes, and deer, etc., find themselves wandering about back & forth across the road- woodchucks are , by far, our most common road-pizza, hitting one can be treacherous. I feel badly when less common wildlife gets road-whacked, I saw this beautiful male Timber rattler a few years back, alive & coiled, in the minute it took me to slide to a stop and fly back to him, he'd been whacked. Still tasted great, regardless ... I scored two tiny fawns, that had been killed by cars ahead of me, in the past week....Their backstraps and hams were a delicacy, as always.  | ||

I hit a rabbit last night on the bike. I knew not to panic and hoped he made it between my tires. He didn't. I feel bad for'em, but I'm glad it was a deer | ||

Tramp, same thing happened to me last week in Europe. Was coming down from a mountain pass in the Alps and saw a small snake in the road. I went about 200 yards and turned around and came back to find a squished snake. I believe it was what the Germans call a Kreuzotter, a alpine pit viper. Cool to see some wildlife in the decimated countryside of Europe, but not cool to see it killed. | ||

I was talking with a guy I work with and he saw the same car but the van was gone as well as the deer-thus someone made off with dinner. rabbit is most excellent too. | ||
