Hey ya'll - need some advice - In the middle of a ride this weekend, after stopping for gas, my bike wouldn't start as it normally does. Determined that I had to have the clutch in, and the kickstand up to start the bike. If the kickstand went down, the bike would immediately shut down. I just bypassed the kickstand switch by shorting the two leads together. I still have the same problem. Also tried leaving the leads open and still the same problem. Can only start the bike with the clutch lever pulled in and the kickstand up, even with the kickstand switch bypassed. Don't know why the kickstand position is still a factor, and I have no idea why the clutch needs to be pulled in. Any ideas would be appreciated - Kilroy |

Have you checked the starter relay and the 2 diodes #1 & #2 on the fuse block. I just did a look at the schematic for my 2000 M2. |

Thanks all - neutral light on when in neutral, off when in gear, appears to be working correctly. Starts absolutely fine, as long as the kickstand is up and the clutch is pulled in. If not, starter circuit is dead - absolutely nothing when you hit the button, so I don't think it is the starter relay - it appears to be a safety switch of some kind, and other than the sidestand switch, I don;t know what other switches are in the circuit. I suppose I could read the manual but I wondered if anyone else had run across this yet and could give me an easy solution - Kilroy |

update - In my half asleep stupor, I apparently jumped the "load" side instead of the "line" side. Kickstand switch is now correctly bypassed. Will start with kickstand up or down. Still need to have the clutch pulled in though, so I will look at the neutral switch circuit also. Seems strange that 2 things would go south at the exact same time........ |

clutch lever safety switch..... read the service manual and search knowledge vault. most problems have been resolved in the past, and can be easily referenced, often with step-by-step procedures and pix |

Tom When you say bypassed, does that mean that the two wires to the switch are shorted together? Or you can ground the tan and white wire to ground. This will bypass the switch, ground side wires and the ground connection. Joe |

Joe - I have shorted the two wires together to bypass the switch. Do you recommend one way over the other?? Kilroy |

Tom It sounds like a bad connection at ground at the main chassis ground. Measure resistance from the side stand switch connector that you just bypassed to a good ground, with the bike off. It should be 0 ohms or very close. Unbolt and clean all the connection at chassis ground. If you look at figure 7-54 you will see the tan/white wire from the ignition relay pin 85 goes directly to the side stand switch onto ground at junction S1 from there to the main chassis ground. This ground has to be made at all times the motor is running unless it is bypassed with the neutral or clutch switches. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if I can help and what you find. Good luck Joe |
