Anyone replace theirs or had a bad one? Trying to figure out why my bike pings when its hot out. So far the shop hasn't pinned it down with a tune using the direct link. Another shop suggested it could be the O2 sensor or another part of that system that maybe swells when it gets hot. Thoughts? |

Which model? Accel or WOT pinging? How's the AFV? How much WOT enrichment? What about the CEL? Which error if the CEL is lit? Regards, Gunter |

Profile says 06 Uly. Could be the advanced-timing issue, have a tech take a look at your base timing, it may need to be retarded a couple degrees. |

Thanks for the responses. Not sure what WOT means. I notice its pings right about when the fan comes on. 3k roll on in any gear. When its really hot, even with the fan on its pinging. So I take it the fan cant keep that rear cylinder cool enough. My paper work listing the AFV is at home. Don't remember seeing any CEL info. I have asked about the base timing but they told me they could get rid of it with the dyno tune. Not sure if their getting it hot enough but I am sure they don't want to burn it down on the dyno. It does smell fat during warm up and I get alot of exhaust backfiring on heavy accel. When I get home tonight I'll scan my AFV sheet. Thanks guys, any help is appreciated. |

WOT = Wide Open Throttle CEL = Check Engine Light Offer still stands to check things out with ECMSpy, including base timing, AFV, etc. Might have a bit of time this weekend. |

I have a similar issue with my '04 S. I've got ECMSpy and a cable, but I'm all thumbs with it. I've reset the TPS and AFV with it, but that's about it (having a laptop battery that's crapping out doesn't help much with any kind of datalogging either ) Red_chili & Snowscum, would you be willing to make it a "Tuning Party"? We could meet up wherever in the Metro area and go over the bikes and then go out for a short ride! This weekend is pretty much open for me. I'm a "visual learner" (read all the tuning guides - still Greek to me) and would like to see how to utilize the program better! (Message edited by elf on July 01, 2008) |

I'm in old downtown Littleton. The fourth or fifth, early-ish morning, should be good. I have a shop in back, and laptop with ECMSpy and a cable, with all the drivers working great. Bring your laptop and we'll get you set up, Snowscum. FWIW, I've not done any datalogging yet. Maybe you can help me get that set up! (Message edited by Red_Chili on July 01, 2008) |

Fifth would probably work for me. I'll have to check with SWMBO, though. I think we could figure out the datalogging thing. I've not done it either! The battery has to last longer than 10 minutes to really be effective ! Would you need me to bring anything? I could put some files onto an old thumb drive as a backup... |

I replaced my 02 sensor in my 039R. Nothing was wrong with my old one. Long story. Buy the part from auto parts store $20. Buell stealerships charge $50 for the same part. IRCC its the same 02 outta 92 chevy pick-up. The rest of the FI system is all mustang. My injectors have ford logos on them. |

That is hilarious Barker! Red, I would be up for some tweaking as long as we don't burn her down. Lol I could get down there the 5th for abit if that works for both of you? Oh and it is an 06. What do you guys think about an intake leak only when the head gets to a certain temp? I did have a bad intake leak about the 1500 mile mark. I am trying to remember how it was acting other than bad pinging. (Message edited by snowscum on July 01, 2008) |

Barker is right. I think the Bosch P/N for the o2 sensor is 12014 or something like that. There's also a Delco number that cross-references... The 5th works for me! PM with directions/address/time. Snowscum, we might be able to test out your theory. I've heard of crazier things. I've worked on quite a few air-cooled VW's, and sometime the strangest stuff would happen with the heating and cooling of the engine! (Message edited by elf on July 01, 2008) |

Bosch O2 sensor? Ewww. I will PM directions. I stumbled upon the Buelletin ECMSpy info. Oh my. It will take a while to digest. Wild way of faking out the TPS. I had no idea you could change the effective RPM for the fuel cells. You really CAN screw up your bike terminally!! More to read and digest... |

I get a fairly noticeable ping as well if I roll on the throttle from about 3000rpm. Typically happens at highway speeds though, and *only* happens on a medium roll on. It doesn't seem to happen on a WOT roll on (maybe I just don't here it), so I guess I am supposed to WOT all the time |

Hopefully we will find out when we get together this weekend Greenamp. One of us will report results. |

With the help of Red Chili and Elf I no longer ping. My static timing was off quite a bit. Not sure what a line and ahalf represents but seemed like alot to me. Many thanks go out to you guys and thanks for teaching me some things about our bikes. Elf: Let us know if it was YOUR O2 sensor since it obviously wasn't mine. Lol Now if I can get some of that power back lost with the timing set where it should be. Might ask the shop if they would try tuning it again. I am sure I will get some grief. So NO you can NOT tune out a ping with just a direct link tune for all that have this issue. Lessons learned. Lol |

Well, actually, you *can* tune out a ping *if* the ping is from an overly lean condition. But no, you cannot tune out a ping if the ping is from 6* too much advance! SHAME on them for not checking that as the VERY FIRST thing that could be whacked. A computer is only as good as the data it is fed.

I checked my timing with ecmspy and it was right on. I too was getting pinging and it wouldn't start when cold unless I cracked the throttle and then it wouldn't idle. I noticed that after resetting the tps I was able to idle at 2.9 tps. That shouldn't be possible so it has to be an intake manifold leak, unfortunately HD/Buell's design sucks and is a common problem. Hell both my Buell and Road Glide are down with manifold leaks!! Some engineers should be shot or maybe the bean counter!! |

Tootal: So when would it ping? (RPM,temp)Does the idle stay consistent? I noticed mine started perfect this morning. But I miss that lower end power already. |

ECMSpy, Michael, ECMSpy... Slightly advance the base timing if you must, but that ain't the right way. You can get away with it up here in the thin air, but not at sea level. Tootal, you just gave me a diagnostic for intake manifold leaks, wouldn't have thought of that but it makes perfect sense. (Message edited by Red_Chili on July 08, 2008) |

Snowscum, it would ping in the midrange on acceleration and also when leaving a stop. Unless I revved it up and slipped the clutch it would bog down and ping on a normal take off. It was really running like crap and I thought it had something to do with the 07 flash but no, it was just sucking!! The bad part is my Geezer Glide is down for the same problem!! All I can say is Genuine James Gasket's blue silicone o-rings to the rescue!! Red Chili, It finally hit me like a ten lb sledge while I was resetting the tps for the tenth time. It use to idle around 5.1 or so. I would ride it and try downloading a different map and reset the tps and it would idle at 4.8. This kept happening until I was idling at 2.9!! Well Duh!! Sometimes I'm a little dense! (Message edited by tootal on July 08, 2008) |
