Blake- I've thought about looking for a Sportster or aftermarket frame for my X1 engine. I like the power but hate to ride this bike for more than an hour. I probally should have bought a VMAX instead. I keep hearing that a Sportster frame isn't strong enough to house a Buell motor. Is this a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo? Has anyone did this transplant? What kind of obsticals can I expect? Thanks again, -Dan |

This past week has seen some nice weather here in East Yorkshire. This weekend is the last Bank Holiday weekend of the year, and Monday is British Superbikes at Cadwell Park. Cadwell Park is a fantastic race track, bike race track at that too, set in a natural ampitheatre in the wilds of Lincolnshire, not 60 miles from my home town. Yes I have to cross the Humber Bridge to get to Cadwell, but ten miles south of the bridge and you're in swamp land. Interbreeding and .. well we won't go there eh LOL, but the sound of Superbikes in the woods etc etc.... So no doubt many of you are aware that the 'Texas Tronado' rides for the Castrol Honda boys, a British outfit. In celebration of Colins double win at Laguna Seca earlier this year, we the Brit's are getting a special commisioned version of the Tornado's Honda. The first one is gonna be demonstrated at Cadwell on Monday, ridden by no other than the 'Texan Tornado' himself. How cool is that After the demo laps he's gonna sign the bike, then it's off to Cusworths of Doncaster, the sole agent for this limited run version, and put up for sale. Am I going ? I dunno yet but it's high on the list of 'things to do when in Lincolnshire'. If I go I'll take pics. Rocket |

For those following my no spark problem: I got the M2 back today with a new coil (and speedo sensor) and it ran like a champ - no electrical gremlin as of yet. (I shall also be carrying a bypass for the kick stand switch and a new-in-the-bag Bank Angle switch for the next few days just to be sure). Wish me luck. Have a great weekend. |

Snail, You nailed it on the contact patch. You might use axle load in place of GVW. That would then include dynamic effects like the g-force encountered in a dip on when blasting around a high banked turn. |

MrX, I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that if you had a little help figuring out your optimum ergonomics on your X1, you would be a very happy biker. Far happier than on any rigid mount Sportster. Please forgive me if the following is old news to you. 1. A good quiet full face helmet with a rear spoiler is essential to long term comfort when touring at speed. The Shoei RF800, RF900, Z-II, and others include this feature as do other top brand helmets. The small, seemingly ineffective spoiler is amazingly effective at eliminating the neck strangling helmet lift at high speeds. And a quiet full face shield, even in the heat of summer is a virtuous ergonomic necessity. A good helmet really makes all the difference. 2. Set your front brake lever and especially your clutch lever so that when reaching for them your wrist remains straight to your forearm. Having to reach up and over to grab the clutch will wear your wrist out in short time. 3. Toss the heavy duty cruiser boots for a pair of nice light weight yet heavily armored sport oriented riding boots. After three years I've finally worn out my Joe Rockets (forgot the model). They only wore out from contacting pavement going for fourth gear blasting through the kink between turns 3 and 4 at Oak Hill Raceway. There are lots of good brands and models of sport oriented riding boots. I like the ones with velcro closure for easy in and out. Pay an extra $50 and you can get 'em waterproof. The light boots make it so much easier to move your feet and the soles are designed for traction and provide good vibration isolation. The high boots also isolate the effect of flapping jeans on your legs. 3.5 Ride on the balls of your feet. This alleviates some of the glutial load. Take advantage of the rear pegs and ride like a racer once in a while for a change of pace. 4. If your wrists are bothering you, try moving the handle bars to better suit your riding position/stature. Often times the aftwards cant of the handlebars isn't compatible with a rider's position and body size/build. A sharper or narrower rearward cant to the bars can make a huge improvement in long term riding comfort. 4.5 A good pair of riding gloves can help buffer some of the harsher bumps and vibes. 5. A pair of cycling shorts or athletic briefs that have no seams significantly improve the seat to glutial interface. Along the same line, avoid very loose fitting jeans. Snug without being tight will aid posterior 6. A pair of those little soft pink earplugs from Walmart's sporting department eliminate all the aural stress from a long ride. Really makes a difference. The NOJ quiet rider helmet insert is similarly beneficial. 7. The Buell seats are pretty lame. You might try having yours custom upholstered with a gel pad inserted between foam and seat pan. 8. Eliminate any clothing or gear that flaps in the wind. The more streamlined your gear/clothing, the less stress you will need to endure. 9. Stop every hundred miles or so. Life ain't a race. Take the back roads, avoid the super-slab. 10. Possibly most importantly, ensure your suspension is set up optimally. Reduce rear shock compression damping a notch or two. Set preload to achieve sag/squat withing the specified range. Remember, preload only adjusts ride height and the ratio of compression to rebound travel; it does not affect the stiffness of the ride. Preload can be used to alter the fore/aft attitude of the bike. Reduce rear preload (increase sag/squat) and increase front preload to adapt a more nose up attitude. You may be surprised how much a difference this can make. Just be warned however that the handling characteristics of the bike can also change significantly with such adjustments. Damping can help adjust ride harshness. Tire pressure can also have a big effect on quality of ride. Let us know exactly what your ergonomic woes are, and I'm sure another Buell rider who has had similar sufferings will chime in with his brand of solution. Don't give up on your X1. With some perseverance and experimentation, you can easily make it a very comfortable ride. |

Prima facie, Copernicanism was in contradiction with Scripture, and in 1616 Galileo was given some kind of secret, but official, warning that he was not to defend Copernicanism. Just what was said on this occasion was to become a subject for dispute when Galileo was accused of departing from this undertaking in his Dialogue concerning the two greatest world systems, published in Florence in 1632. Galileo, who was not in the best of health, was summoned to Rome, found to be vehemently suspected of heresy, and eventually condemned to house arrest, for life, at his villa at Arcetri (above Florence). He was also forbidden to publish. By the standards of the time he had got off rather lightly. |

Tripp, If the bikes been setting for a long time the rings may have seated to the inside of the cylinders. The best solution, especially for the purists on this board is a a complete rebuild of the upper end. However, there are some "bailing wire" methods that will get if going. Simplest is to put a few cc's of Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder (this is a twin?) and let if soak for a day or so. Put the bike in 5th gear and push it down a slope with someone on the bike for weight. Slip the clutch a few times until the piston pop loose. More drastic measure involve tow ropes, fifth gear, and a car. Before you try this, make sure the engine is seized by putting on the backstand, putting in 5th and turning the back wheel without plugs. If the wheel don't turn it's seized. Also check to make sure that there isn't part of a piston inside the exhaust. Have fun. There is nothing like getting an old bike to run. The satisfaction when it first starts is incredible. Court, I'be been so busy I forgot to order my Team Elves shirts. Do you have any extras? Thanks Arvel |

tripp, if the starter is spinning, but the motor is not turning over, you will want to look at the starter clutch. It is a one-way bearing behind the alternator on the left side of the engine. If the bike has sat for a long time this bearing has probably gone out. It's a simple repair, the bearing probably cost's around $20 at the local Kawa shop. Good luck and drop me a line if ya have any other questions about the old iron... |
