Just fun shots from this past weekend's Fancy Gap and surrounding ride. The whole idea for me was to get out and blow off some steam. So after looking at my options I could not pass up the chance to ride in the mountains, do some chores but then ride some of the most beautiful country around. To boot FB&D are there and Webe came up on Saturday. I hate that we did not get a chance to hook up with a few others like Twig and Nuts. Rustic, no?
Exploring the neighborhood Saturday morning.
Not all roads are paved. I spend a great thirty minutes trying to find pavement again. Not that I was not having fun, just did not know where I was and needed to meet Ferris & Denise.
Found my way out and to Meadows of Dan. The bike had so much fun exploring its adventurous side, it refuse to park on pavement.

Well Ferris, I did get one shot Saturday before the camera died so no excuses!
Unfortunately my camera died early on Saturday, plus we spent a lot of the afternoon trying to resolve a broken front muffler strap on my Uly. So no more pics of Ferris, Denise and Webe. On Sunday I was able to get a few shots from an unfamiliar angle, in front of Ferris. So Ferris how does it feel to be the chrome in a Uly sandwich?
So Ferris indulged me for a short time, then either because he had to go pee, or has a sixth sense, he took the lead near Roanoke and took us up to the Star.
You can see how pretty it was early on Sunday. Well that all changed in Roanoke. As we unload in more ways than one, we hear the crack of thunder close. Considering we were on the tallest point in the area, with the metal Star on one side and a cell phone tower on the other we decided to check the radar on my phone. It said, "The weather sucks!@!" Nasty thunderstorms coming in waves so we wait out the first wave there. Well as the weather cleared we decided to drop down off the mountain and find refuge in Roanoke. We found an Outback near the parkway and decide that was a good place the wait out the second wave. As you can see it was a good call!
Yes that is hail!
So after spending a couple of hours drinking a couple of beers and waiting the weather out, it was time to head home. Webe and I waved FB&D off at the parkway and headed south on US220. That is a good number because that was the number of miles Webe and I both got on that tank of gas going home. Yup two Ulys side by side getting 60mpg+ I even managed to find a cool shortcut that did not turn out to be a Dave shortcut. Stopping for gas at NC-96 and US-1 the wind was blowing and the skies were darkening so out comes the phone and a quick check of the radar. Again it said, "The weather sucks@!@" So instead of riding northeast to the coast and then back southwest to ride around the weather we decided to suck it up and ride though it. To this point we stayed pretty much dry with just a few sprinkles along the way. Well the next twenty or so miles were a bit scary with cloud to cloud lightning overhead, but I have ridden through worse. After breaking through the band of storms we dealt with wet roads a spray off cars but no more rain or lightning. In Snow Hill Webe and I waved each other off and I rolled into the house just after 9pm. The wildlife count in order of quantity and speed of clearing the road. 12 - Deer, 4 pretty spotted fawns 3 - Beavers (The animal) 1 - Snake (Striking but too slow to hit either Uly) 1 - Possum 1 - Turtle 1 - Basset Hound 1 - Tree Yup, the Basset was slower than the turtle getting off the road, but quicker than the tree. |

before i post a few pix, i gotta say that riding with Carlos and Webe is a little like having your own rolling version of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour in tow. "Ladies and Rednecks, please make welcome two of your own, Carlos FoxUly and Webe the Cable Guy!!!" :-) anyway, great fun to spend the better part of the weekend with youse guys, and even double-busted muffler clamps and the threat of being summarily crispy-fried under the Roanoke Star couldn't stop the laughs and camaraderie. the aforementioned Star
tale of the tape
the view of Roanoke (moments after the first thunderstorm, about ten minutes before the second)
Webe Thumpin, Webe Grinnin, Webe Ready to git some place where the sky ain't fallin!
it was actually a very pretty place to hide from the weather (with the added benefit of being right in front of the restrooms, handy when the urge to become destinktive kicks in...)
with all due apologies to James Taylor: "Hurts my motor to get so wet, damn this thunderstorm!"
show me love! (say Denise, how many fingers are you holding up???)
C3 rules, even in Virginia! :-)
and finally, after Carlos and the Cable Guy headed south towards North Carolina and into the wet unknown, me 'n D enjoyed an 80-mile ride down a virtually deserted Blue Collar Ridge Parkway, bright and sunny but the pavement still steaming in places from the storms that had just blown thru, high on life and thankful for good friends, good roads and good times. this was taken at Adney Gap, just south of Roanoke
what a weekend! ride to lean, y'all. :-):-) |

well, guess ignernt is as ignernt does... not sure how to take any of that but will take the high road and believe it to be a good thing... had/have some pix that good friend Jim Corso was able to shrink down to posting size on this board but I'll be damned, they's still not getting through. must be the ignernt thing. in any event.... it was a great weekend and EVEN THOUGH I had to remind someone (ahem) that the weather "could be severe at times" I chose to take the day off and screw around riding with this traveling comic show - and had a grand day (dodging lightening bolts 'n all) Got to ride with the sweetie, hang with Carlos and meet the Cable Guy and, well, don't get much better than that. . Yessiree, we aint skeered. |
