I had a problem last week a couple people helped me out with finding a bad ground after my tail swap. Having bad ground cause the ground going to the fuel pump to open. I have a new harness on order from HD but won't be here for a while. old harness is not repairable because it broke right at the grommet into the fuel pump.

I had the pump out of the bike and re-installed it without the ground on the inside of the pump but bolted to the outside of the pump.

The bike will run but runs like crap. Won't idle, wants to die, you have to keep giving it gas but not too much or it bogs out.

1) Is the ground necessary on the inside of the pump or is grounding it to the outside on the base ok?

2) Does it sound like I messed up the pump somehow when I had it out and it's not operating correctly?

3) Any other thoughts? Maybe bad gas after I drained it into a container when I had the pump out and poured it back in the bike?

I really need help, bike has been down for a few weeks and I really am itching to ride.

If there is a ground that you neglected to connect, it would be prudent to do so and see if that solves your problem.

Edit: I was going to ask which wire on the fuel pump burnt out, but, rereading your post, it's the wire harness wire that burnt out, right? So, if the problem is not with the fuel pump itself, why not just replace or repair the burnt out wire while waiting for the new wire harness to arrive?

I have all 4 grounds under the seat connected to the sub-frame. The only ground in question is the ground going to the fuel pump.

Is it necessary to have this ground running through the grommet in the fuel pump and grounding on the inside of the tank or is it ok to ground to the outside of the pump?

Also, I read on another forum someone saying after a dead battery/ground issue that their bike ran crappy and the ECM needed to be reset. After their ECM was reset the bike ran normally. Are they talking about a TPS reset?

The burnt out wire was the ground wire. It is not replaceable as it burnt open right at the grommet. The grommet is molded around the wire for sealing issues and there is no way to remove the wire and insert a new one.

Yeah, that's a toughie. I looked into the manual and the w/h has the grommet which has to be inserted into its hole on the fuel pump and the wires terminated into the connector.

I suppose one could stick a needle into the wire strands going into the pump and attach a jumper from the needle to the broken w/h ground wire and see if it doesn't help (providing it's not leaking fuel). But that's something a Sparky might do, I'm not suggesting that YOU do it.

The fuel pump needs a solid electrical ground to work. Without that, it might be using colateral circuits as a ground path, causing unpredictable and potentially dangerous conditions.

I have a new wiring harness for the fuel pump on order from the dealer. I'm just going to have to wait until it gets here and drop the fuel pump again and replace the harness. Can't think of any other way to get a new wire through there without leaking fuel.

Hopefully the new wiring will fix my problem, and there isn't something else going on with the ECM.

Rigging a sub standard wiring setup to an area with fuel would not be adviseable.

Despite the itch to ride I would recommend you wait until the correct part arrives.

^^ This is true, and that's what I have decided to do.

Okay, let's say after I get the new wiring harness and the fuel pump is properly grounded, the bike is still not running correctly like I described above.

Could weak fuel pressure or the ECM cause this problem?

Got my new wiring harness in today and just installed on bike. Took her out for a spin and runs like a champ. I'm glad that's over.

So, for the record the fuel pump must have a internal ground to work properly. External grounds won't work.
