Couple of points...
1, Impedance can only be talked about in an AC circuit, and
2. An LED is a semiconductor, so its resistance in its conducting state will be different than in its static state. Using a volt meter will not yield an accurate measurement. You'd need to measure the current in the circuit and solve for resistance with a given voltage.

Got some more info on my stolen X1. Went around and knocked on some doors, hoping someone would see or hear something. I was convinced the theft happened sometime early in the AM. Then I ran into one of the apartment maintenance guys. He noticed a small PU with a small trailer behind my bike, and a guy was doing something by the front end of my bike. He asked what's going on and this guy replied that he was my friend and was picking up the bike to the shop for me. He drove off to do some work but decided to write down the license plate number of the PU. Of course, the police returned with a zero on the license number. This happened around noon Monday. I was surprised, he was stealing my bike in broad daylight with people coming and going. I wonder if there was some help with some of the shadier apartment dwellers. A lot of people around knows I work the nightshift and weekends, the bike parked during the day and gone all night. I have an alarm disc lock I used daily, it had prevented an atttempted theft once. I was off work on Monday and thought I would be running to school and errands, but was too sick with a migraine so I decided to stay in. I forgot to install the disc lock.

Rod,

Your bike was on a shopping list and being watched for sometime. The best time to relieve someone of a parked bike is in the broad daylight. Most people won't bother to ask any questions. Especially at an apartment complex with so many people coming and going.

Most here know that my M2 just recently did a disappearing act also. From an apartment complex carport where I NORMALLY had it chained up and with a disc lock. I parked it on sunday, late afternoon and it was gone by tuesday morning 6am. Only one entrance/exit and nobody saw a thing. It probably rolled right past the pool full of people sometime monday in a trailer....The sheriffs deputy who patrols my area could hardly believe it was gone. He knew it was always chained and secured.

I remember reading about your troubles now. I take it I should write the bike off ? I'm bummed out over the theft and not able to ride. I put more miles on it than I do on my truck. I like it the way it is. I have a 29 inseam so I can't ride much on other bikes. Don't like cruisers. And I'm very much partial to black. Did they ever find your M2 ?

On Sunday Loli wanted to go up to Santa Barbara HD / Buell to pick up an FXRG jacket she liked that they had a good deal on. Of course we have to take the fun way there...

When turning from Topanga onto Mulholland Dr we noticed a pair of toilettes sitting by the side of the road. Very Interesting.

We eventually got to the dealership. By this time, I realized I was coming down with the flu. That was somewhat made up for when I heard a dealer employee refer to the FXRG jacket as a GSXR jacket...

By the time we left I was miserable. We stopped at Carrow's just down the way so I could have some hot tea. We ordered some pie as well. The pie showed up along with a little hot water pot and tea bag. I asked the apparently non english speaking guy with the Treasure Troll hair for a cup with which to drink said tea. Instead I got a spoon. I tried desperately to ask the guy for a cup. The waitress intervened and set him straight - so he showed up with a soup mug...

Anyway, we were on our way back. Almost home. We rode from Mulholland Hwy to Mullholland Dr. Before turning on to Topanga I noticed that where there were two toilettes there was now only one.

Depends on who took it, but since your followup report stated the thief had a trailer and was bold and calm enough to do the deed in daylight I'd say the chance is slim to none that anything will be recovered except the parts with the VIN stamped into them. And those parts will probably be washed clean of fingerprints and dumped in a store dumpster someplace not in the thiefs neighborhood. Your parts are either probably going to a Sportster or another Buell, might even be going to someone's track-only bike. Wheels and forks might wind up on a custom H-D or other bike. The thief is either in your nearby area or near your work area due to his knowing the bike is home during the day (which is why my bikes are stored elsewhere while I'm out of town, thank God for friends with big garages).

Since you now know the thief had a trailer and truck, you can assume the theft wasn't a joy ride theft. Call your insurance company, don't say anything about not having the alarm-disk-lock not on the bike, say the maintenance guy saw the thief working on the front end probably removing the lock or steering lock, and give the insurance company the license number the maintenance guy took down. No offense to the officer, but some officers aren't too energized when given a partial or one-letter-typo'd plate number. The officer could have even typo'd the number himself when keying it in or writing it down. Or the thief's plates were taken from someone else's car in the area which is often done by thieves (Hit the mall, snag a plate, do the deed, then dump the stolen plate or return it to the vehicle it was taken from if they're really clever so there is no additional theft report in the area which would enable a competant investigator to track the thief down better).

Get the vehicle description and trailer description, color and model, as well as a description of the thief, and make up your own "Wanted" poster and artist's sketch and go around and post those in auto and bike shops. Put the contact number to that of the report taking officer or his/her department.

Crime sucks. One thief working alone with a trailer during the day is probably a parts hunter. A pro or bike ring would have been in a van or bigger truck with two or more guys/gals and would have loaded it in and out of sight.

Thinking about it, around noon on a Monday, could be someone who works in your area, took his lunch hour, and then went back to work with your bike on his trailer. He might have thrown a tarp over it.

SLC, while a big city, isn't all that big. People talk, so keep your eyes and ears open. Insurance is cheaper than attorney fees, so don't go to jail trying to recover the bike or seeking justice against the thief. But, do what you gotta do regardless (interpret as appropriate).

Rod,

From what you say about yours, the guy new what he was after. That and doing it in broad daylight. I would say it will be a total write off at this point.
Call the insurance company and start the paperwork.
Find every picture and receipt you have for it. I was lucky my policy had a $3k rider for extras. First thing they said was "we want receipts for the custom parts and add-ons".

As for mine.... It's been 20 odd days since and not even a word. It was out of state or over the border before I even talked to the cops. The more people I talk to and tell them mine was stolen. The more I here I was not the only one in the past month.

Don't get to bummed. It was wanted and not even the disc lock was gonna stop it. Proof in the pudding is he showed up with a trailer and acted naturally. I'd bet more than just the maintenance saw it getting loaded up. Chances are someone in the complex turned the guy onto where you kept it also.

Fortunately, with the help of a friend I was turned on to the S1 I now have in my possession. The insurance co is dragging thier collective feet.

I was so bummed I took the day off from work!

Still Looking for someone who has put inverted forks on an M2. Have just got a front end for an x1. Would like to know how it worked out, and if it is worth the effort to do this conversion. Are there any complications that could result from this?

Thanx much guys,

Started the paperwork with the insurance company this AM. They were honest about the recovery rate, which is zilch. But their standard policy is to allow 30 days for the police to do their "investigation", which I've already talked to some of the guys down at the shop, which is no investigation at all. One of the guys suggested that I get the XB9S instead of another X1. That was tempting. Then he made a call and found out that delivery was going to be Jan instead of the rumored Sept. The XB9S is less powered than the X1 but lighter overall. Does anybody have the formula for the power/weight ratios for both ? Anyway, I still like the X1 for what it is, guess I'll just have to bring pictures of both into work, stare at them and decide.

I was avionics meself on F111 over in the UK, and F16 in Fla. Now I help test DRAM. Kinda miss the jet noise. We had the Hooters Girls out on the flightline once, but that was when things were less PC.

I've seen the results of the conversion before on Sportsters, Dynas and drag bikes. Slapping the parts together is straight forward from what I've been told. The only concern I can see is if the M2 and X1 have a different rake and the offset in the trees are diiferent. I think I remember the M2 being 2 degrees more, but I don't know about the offset. The rake difference could mean the X1 tubes need to be a slight bit longer to maintain the same ride height. That length is probably so trivial, it won't matter. As for the offset, if the X1 trees have less, you've shortened the wheelbase a bit and gained more trail, which will help the bike turn easier. If you have more offset, the opposite will be true. That's the only thing to consider.

Florida, must have been Tyndall then. I was a Hurlburt with the 8th SOS.

Now working for Raytheon LLC, or soon to be known as Veratek Aerospace. Been around trash haulers since I was 18.....

Decide if you really want to find it and chances are you will. Know who to ask and where to look.

For those who were following my no spark problem (and giving me all the good advice) the mechanic, who said he hates to approach it this way, is going to bypass the kick stand switch, swap the coil and keep his fingers crossed. Of coarse, the bike wouldn't foul when he had it so I can't blame him for not being able to identify what wasn't broken. I'll keep ya all posted. (I might go ahead and swap the bank angle sensor/tip switch myself for good measure - is that hard to do?)

I sold my Buell about two weeks ago. I decided to sell it when I realized that on my last long ride I did nothing but worry that the bike was going to break. It had 16,000 miles on it and had caused no problems to that point. But as my buddie's Buells were breaking right and left, I realized that I had lost confidence in the bike. The day after I advertized the bike, a stranger walked up to me at the ferry and asked if I liked the bike. I replied that I did, and that it was for sale. Three days later he bought the bike. At around the same time, another friend advised me that he had a Triumph Daytona for sale. I bought it and love it! There are things about the Buell that I really like over the Daytona, but there are more things I like about the Triumph. And I no longer feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop when I go riding. Right now there are five persons in my group of riding buddies who have replaced their Buells with Triumphs. It seems to be a trend. Too bad....I had thought that the Buell would be my last bike, but once I lost confidence in it, it ruined the whole biking experience.

Do ducks take to water...it is something of passage for owning an older, pre '99 though. I had fun with the M2, the fun factor can only go up with this beast. The power delivery is so different. You can tell the difference between the lightning cams and stock M2 parts.

How many new customers do you think Buell would capture with a similarly styled and powered bike? (Although I think they need to work a little on the placement of the foot pegs. Seem a little far forward for a true sporty-type bike)

The Confederate is probably ridiculously expensive, but put some mass production savings to it and some cheaper components (Showa vs Penske shock for example) and I be they could get it to at least a competitive price as compared to Buells now.

Wonder if anyone at Buell is listening. 'Cause that's a bike I would buy!

But Confederate seems to have more problems than Buells ;^D

Apparently, they reportedly die, and no one seems to want to do the warranty work (found several of these reports on various Confederate owners' sites)...

It's Upper Heyford, but I had friends with those wackos in the SOS and the weirdos out on the flightline in Lakenheath/Mildenhall. Then I got lucky and went to Tampa. Really miss that city and the daily 5pm Bayshore 500 rally.

You're right that SLC is not a big city and I do want my bike back as is. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. But I'm not optimistic. Whoever did it probably knows that it's better to chop ASAP since it is not a common bike around town.
