ROAD TRIP:I am leaving STL tomorrow for the Gap and will be staying at DGMR Fri, Sat and Sun, returning to STL Mon evening...I would welcome company...Friday eve I'll be in the apartment, which is #2 and have extra beds...Sat I'll be moving to an as yet undetermined room...If you can join me I can be reached at 314.821.0776 days, and 636.938.3788 evenings... See Ya! Bob |

Confirmed, I talked to Nick Wyatt (extension 140) today and he confirmed that Brandy has moved on. He was very helpful in getting me signed up for the Fontana dinner Saturday evening, Sept 14. I got the last rental at DGMR for Sept 13 and 14 ...an APARTMENT. I'm traveling by myself so have three (3) bunks available if anyone is looking for a place to stay. Send me an email. Only tent sites were available at Fontana. I missed the ride last year, looking forward to this get-to-gather and lean. |

Hey Dean, We got a room. Do we want to do the dinners? Looking forward to catching the roads I missed last year. And trying to stay clear of the bodysurfers on the ones I rode. Also curious if the Firebolts can hang with the Big boys. Ed "Hillbilly"Manning |

The only reason a Firebolt couldn't 'hang with the Big Boys' would be if the rider isn't up to par. No matter how hard I push this bike it just laughs at me. I'm nowhere near a good enough rider to pull even 75% of what this bike can do out of its hat. Bryan |

Darth; I had the chance to jump off my S1 onto a borrowed Firebolt and ride back on the same Ozarks road that I had just come down. On the S1 I was riding 80 MPH thru the bends at my usual 8/10th pace. On the Bolt it felt like 7/10ths, and the speedo was at a steady 90. It is truly an amazing handling motorcycle. It has it's quirks, but handling headroom in spades. |

Heh...in the XB9R section on the Quick Board there is a picture of a guy leaned over so far on a 'bolt his elbow is nearly touching the ground and the pegs are still 3" off the pavement. Haven't got that far yet, but every time I take a curve I know I get a little lower, bit by bit, and like I said, this bike just laughs at me. As someone else said, it's like the bike is saying, "Is that all you got?" I cannot WAIT to get to Deal's Gap on this thing and just go back and forth a few times, a little faster each time. Bryan |

Just back from "The Gap" where I stayed with Bill Gross, his bud Jeff and a farmer from Indiana named Dale that we picked out of the campground the first night there...All three of them on Harleys...Mike O'Brien joined us Sunday on his RF900...As usual I didn't spend too much time on the Dragon...First thing Sat morning there were already three LEOs on the TN side...Saw one bike confiscated along with a couple of pavement surfers...There was a death late Sun on the Cherohala also on the TN side... I left yesterday morning to ride home via a stop in Knoxville to replace both tires on the beemer...The rear was toasted almost to the cord and beaded on the left side...Seems the Dragon eats rubber too...THEY ARE GETTING REAL SERIOUS ABOUT ENFORCEMENT...MIKE TELLS ME AND I SEE IT CONFIRMED ON "THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON" WEB SITE THAT THEY CHANGED THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE TN SIDE OF THE DRAGON TO 30 JUST AFTER I LEFT YESTERDAY...THEY ARE ALSO LIBERALLY USING A TN "DRAG RACING" STATUTE...'Nuff said...My advise would be to plan on arriving before the weekend or staying after to really ride the "Dragon"...Don't let this news keep you from coming...There are PLENTY of great roads to ride...I finally made my way to one that I've been hearing about from the locals and it was better than I'd heard...It was Great Smokey NP without any traffic...Saw fly fishermen, a slide rock and the road?...Well you'll just have to attend to find out... PLEASE, PLEASE make your dinner reservations at DGMR and Fontana so that they have an idea of how many to expect...If they run out of food, the nearest place after 7 p.m. is Robbinsville and a lot of the places there also close early... Those who attended last year will already know this but SWAIN and GRAHAM counties in NC are dry...Tapoco Lodge is still selling beer and wine but their supply is kinda hit or miss...Best plan is to pack in your fav... As you know one of my favorite things to do is to go up on the Cherohala late at night...Mike and I made a run up about ten Sunday night...Despite some overcast the night sky was just spectacular and we did see a few of the early Perseids... A new one for me was Mike and I at the end of a long day riding across Fontana Dam and stopping to peer over the downstream side...Hang on really tight to the railing when doing this...Fontana Dam at night is just spectacular!...The Appalachian Trail crosses the dam... That's about it for now... See Ya! Bob |

Steve...Telliquah Resort is really nice and has one of my favorite restaurants in the area, Cardin's...Good BBQ and moderately priced and they are extremely moto friendly with designated motorcycle parking...It is located on the eastern end of the Cherohala Skyway in Tellico Plains right on TN 165...I had lunch there last Saturday...The restaurant is on the south side of the river and the resort on the north...This would be a good choice for anyone but it is quite a way from Deal's Gap... See Ya! Bob |

Yo! Darth! At last night's MC BRAG mtg (BTW, which BRAG posse do you hang with? I've not seen you around) I learned there'll be 3 other definitely in the Gap area that w/e. Possibly 5 others too. All from the (in)famous Motor City BRAG. The group that put fear and dread back into the name "DETROIT". Swing by one of our Tuesday night meetings (7:30 @ Shield's - Telegraph & 10 Mile). Otherwise, I'll catch ya down there. H-man |

H-Man, I will have to make it a point to get back up to Shield's again sometime soon. Hell, I'll try to make it this coming Tuesday (8/27). I'm part of the American BRAG chapter along with Spiderman. Last time I remember seeing you was at the Homecoming (I'm the guy that rode a Blast all the way from Detroit out there and then sang backup for Spidey with you doing Eminem), though I saw Jeff at Shield's last time I was up there. A buddy of mine from American and I are going to ride down there Thursday, and we're also staying in Fontana Village. Hoping that one or two others from the Battle Twins will be able to tag along. See ya later! Bryan |

Gravedigger got the postcard right, and it was called "Mac's Motel and Restaurant" back then. No guesses on the year the second picture was taken???? Look at the type of bikes, and the attire, hairstyles, etc. will give you hints. Darthane, your close, but it was not in the seventies! |

Had to be late Sixties, then, 'cause Esso became Exxon in '73, and you say it's not from the Seventies. I'm gonna guess 1967, plus or minus 2! r-t |

Yes, it was in the eighties! ok, close enough! The picture was taken 21 years ago On Sept.11-13, 1981, at the Annual USNOA (United States Norton Owners Club)Rally in the Smokies. Over 200 Norton Riders showed up for this event. Just thought I'd share a little nastalgia with ya'll. It was a great time! Looking forward to this trip down and meeting with the Buellers! Anyone know of any earlier rallies at the gap? |
