Yeah - I can't help but "lump" the Urals and the new Enfields together. Ural would be a fun ride for around town but it's a shame to be on a "modern" bike and always have to be aware of how far you have to walk. |

I've worked on both, and, believe me, the Enfield is MUCH more well-manufactured than the Ural |

I wouldn't mind having a RE or a Ural with a hack. Sure would beat firing up the diesel to go grocery shopping!! |

I have heard the Ural of the past 3 years are a much more well rounded machine but I do not know for sure |

Good point, Brumbear- I haven't wrenched on that new a model, and I wouldn't be surprised to find that their exporter, etc., is bringing them up to some standard...esp. considering they really couldn't have gotten any worse. Why anyone would buy one of those instead of a 1970s BMW boxer is beyond me...esp. considering the great deals out there on BMWs |

I'm a big fan of the new "global economy" . . . but will confess it's much easier for me to accept Buell world sourcing than to see MADE IN MADRAS INDIA on the Royal Enfield. It's really not a bad looking bike and I've got some dandy compr shots as we have a "real" (as in old Brit bike) Royal Enfield and a new (as in Indian import) Royal Enfield that sit outside the office. With fuel prices racing cigarette (now just shy of $10 pack) prices to the sky the Manhattan mike population is soaring by the day. . . as, by the way, are the number of squids (LIE was closed for 4 hours on Friday) who are taking "Lane Splitting 101" and finding out that life and XBox aren't exactly the same. |

Didn't Peter Egan of Cycle World and his wife take a Ural on a good long trip? I think I recall reading something like that in one of his articles. I think top speed was 60. It leaked a little oil but she got from point A to B if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure the riders had a good time on it and that's what matters most I'd think. |

The machine that Egan used was very likely run-through with all torque values, etc., reset. Again, it's highly likely that the Urals of the past 5 years are highly improved...couldn't have gotten any worse. I've performed far too many top-end jobs on Urals. riders can't have a good time on a scoot with a seized mill. |

I don't know about "highly" improved, maybe just a "little" improved Excellent point, the bike Egan used probably was gone over with a fine tooth comb prior to the trip. |

The Urals have come a long way, now electric start (kicker back) upgraded electrics, fuel injection, larger displacement (750cc avail.) and of course the side car. My friend works over at the H-Q in Redmond. Crazy bunch of Russians. If you ever want a party, those guys have the best way of getting ALL the party stuff up into the woods on the bikes. And the more vodka I drink, the better my russian gets. |

>>>The Russian mob scares the begeeziz outta me. And with good cause. The upside is that they have great taste in cars. Three years ago someone bought the old house 3 doors from us, did a complete rebuild. Now it sits there, shall we say "well protected" with 3 Escaldes backed in, one of those XLR whatever 2 seater, a Bentley, a Rolls convertible and a stretch Lincoln. A neighbor went to greet the new neighbors and was told, in broken Russian by a guy with a shoulder holster, to leave the property. I am now protected on BOTH sides as the neighbor on the other side is the "tow yard operator" who leaves every morning in a driven S63 with a pair of black Hummers, one ahead and one behind. Crime is non-exisitant in my neighborhood. |

I know your neighbourhood very well. The mob there are not actually Russian. That's all JAK controlled... more bloodthirsty than the Russians, more careless....Montenegrans, Albanians and Serbs |

"Tow Yards" in the Boroughs are not exactly like tow yards in the rest of the country. |
