watch how you write that, it's a matching funds grant. scroll down to the section on the form describing 'in-kind' services you'll provide, in lieu of advancing a monetary match |

I always wear mine...but "stats" (according to Polk County Fire Department)say people who wear helmets are more prove to an accident due to impaired range of sound and sight. |

My friends at PennDOT tell me the Insurance Industry was actually behind the repeal of the helmet laws in Pennsylvania. Why? Because the insurance costs of a dead person are considerably lower than the costs of an injured or maimed person... Capitalism. Gotta love it... |

Florida in general does not. It's kinda funny because my father had always told me that if I needed help financing a bike it would never be a "crouch rocket". Well he bought me the 9r last christmas and said "You will wear a helmet!". He rides...no helmet. Mom on the back...no helmet. When my 16yr old sister is on the back with him...no helmet. Younger brother rides a Fat Boy...no helmet. He even says it's a bit hypocritical. I've had a low speed low sider to where if I didn't have a helmet on my face would have been wrecked. |

jamieC- I've heard exactly that, as well. liability is (understatement-of-the-week coming up) an extremely cut & dry numbers trade. |

That's absolutely terrible. A real sick way of thinking. It should be a crime. There are those situations though where helmets are not going to affect the out come. |

just like it's cheaper for the railroad co. to take a chance with a wrongfull death lawsuit when they hit a vehicle than it is to try and make an emergency stop. the cost of cutting off the wheels that were welded on a track not to mention the chance of cars coming off the track. |

Yeah I know...he's a good man. Law or no law, I wear it weather i'm going 200 miles or 2 miles. I don't ride scared...but I ride with the thought of everyone is out to get me. |

Then I thought about it. Sounds like a good plan to me. I know it is controversial, but obviously protecting people from themselves is not working, so thinning the gene pool might. |

Yeah, but according to the original article post, more people end up crippled for life than dead when riding helmetless so it seems their hypothesis has a flaw in it. |

Its cheaper to plant someone than provide medical care for them for the rest of their life. Road rash hurts... and the scars sunburn real easy... |

I have a buddy that was stationed in HI with the Coast Guard. He had the record for a particular 90 at 84 mph. He decided he wanted to top that and tried 95 mph. Didn't make it. He has a scar from the back of his neck to his ass crack. He also has just enough movement in his left hand to squeeze the clutch. Helmet actually did save his life. Long story short, he calls his left arm "Floppy" and has a zipper tat that covers the scar. And he back stunting like a mad man. Boy ain't right. |

I read an article some years ago that reported states with no mandatory helmet laws spent less tax-payer money on indigent care because helmetless riders had greater chance of dying. It's less of a burden on the state to not have helmet laws, it seems. |

Politics and convoluted logic aside it eventually becomes a personal "wear / no wear" decision. I'm head over heels in love with my wife, kids and life so my decision, which I'd never impose on anyone else not knowing their personal standards, is to always wear the best helmet I can get my hands on. I've always worn Arais just cause they keep sending me a couple a year. I've also been a fan of the "no helmet voids insurance" clause to keep folks who ride foolishly from inflating my insurance my transferring their risk to my policy. But in my sunset years insurance costs, even with increased coverage levels are very reasonable. It's a personal choice and one each person looks at their life and makes for them self. Sometime watch about 10 minutes of politicians on any news show and ask yourself if you want those folks making your life and death decisions. |

I would like to see these hospital statistics along with statistics about non-helmeted riders who never make it to the treatment side of the hospital and instead, go straight to the morgue. I just have a hard time believing that it's cheaper in the long run to provide 60 years of care to a brain damaged 20 year-old squid and bury two dead ones if a helmet might have sent all 3 home to lead productive (tax paying) lives. For some types of insurance companies, the lack of a helmet being a money saver might be the case. Once they have paid out 100% of the policy, they get to walk away. The state doesn't get that option. Taxpayers pay the rest of the bill. If I saw an actual study showing helmets increasing tax burden and I didn't think the study was biased, I would believe it and change my mind. Until then though, I believe that helmets not only save lives, they save taxpayers money too. Bill |
