for some time I have had an issue with take off. 1st gear will snatch, jump lurch, on ocasion I get a pop. Saturday I took more slack out of the belt its just under 2" wheel unloaded. the wheel is dead square to the frame If I vigorusly launch it will do this jump lurch etc SOME TIMES this one is puzzling me I susspect serveral possibles. 1. the good year belt is not compatible with the old pullies, chrome is already coming off rear one with less than 4k miles Belt jumps over front or rear teeth. swing arm adjust is with in .005" square/ slack is 1 7/8" @ 10 lbs 2. suspension issue (wheel hop) 3. clutch cable / adjustment plates LOOK good and the grenade plate is out. 4. Can the primary jump? 5. wheel spin? the lurch usualy happens when the clutch goes out, leaving a stop light The hop/pop on LAUNCH or a LOFT attempt. this may or may not happen leaving a light. I had a pop today on one take off and a lurch on one take off rode 55 miles. |

My 99 S3 does a similar thing. I've tried adjusting clutch, primary chain and it seems to go away and all of a sudden it's back. Mine is a lurch and a clunk. It seems to happen when it is cold more often. |

The isolators have no effect on swing arm / engine alignment, loose bearing "plug" ? lurch / Clunk I get the lurch like the clutch "bounces" I am going to add some slack to the clutch cable. its not as bad I wonder if the cable is going bad? the outside end is ok. |

The chrome coming off the pulley's is not a bad thing...It happens to every bike I can remember seeing. After seeing a few thousand bikes, I consider it normal. |

Experienced that issue on my M2 and my Sporty as well. I changed the gears of first and fourth on the main and countershaft on both bikes. Went to Andrews gears. The problem is history since then. Ralph |

Yes,their drive dogs are engaging while shifting into first. These slightly outworn dogs have been causing the problem on my bikes. Ralph |

Wow, I spoke to this issue in a thread called "Tires and Traction" under the M2 folder. I thought that maybe I was just losing traction at the rear wheel due to tire grip. If I'm reading this right, in first you are experiencing a lag and then a jump, sometime accompanied by a backfire(?). Sound accurate. If that's the case, could X1devil provide more detail in your solution? Is this ("changed the gears of first and fourth on the main and countershaft on both bikes") something that could be done with just the service manual as a guide? |

As long as you got the Clymer(5 speed Sportster manual) or the OEM Buell/Sportster service manual at hand, you can fix it yourself.Follow the books step by step. Read and reread the chapters before you work on your tranny. Take care that you have the necessary tools and small parts. I did it for the first time and had no probs. No rocket science! Ralph |

This gripper was very helpful to get them snap rings off and on.

Ralph is right about the special tool for the gear retaining rings. I just replaced a couple gears in my S1 transmission. Those snap rings are nearly impossible to remove without the right tool. |
