I have an XB9SX and had two air boxes covers (for a total of three including the original) replaced under warranty due to them cracking. Buell changed the material makeup just before I received the second replacement and it worked like a charm.....until today. I pulled into a gas station to get fuel. When I tipped the nozzle toward the fuel inlet about 4-5 oz of gas poured on the tank cover. I grabbed some paper towels and used my Plexus to clean the cover. Just as I had it clean and I was still looking at the cover I watched cracks start appearing in the cover right before my eyes. I was rather shocked and puzzled. I guess if I could have hit the hole all would have been well. Side note: It was warm today (about 90) and we had been running hard so the bike was hot so that probably contributed to the problem. I know that gas is meant to go into the tank and not on it but I thought I would warn anyone who might be a ham fisted jackass like myself. After this I stopped to have a soda and a brownie at a local store and left my jacket hanging on the bike. It was out of the way no issues but when I came back outside the jacket was on the exhaust. Score: Exhaust I /Jacket 0 Jacket is repairable, but when I got home I noticed that the shifting pad on my boots is coming off, and the stitching in the securing strap is coming loose. Then the rubber on my new Buell Traction foot pegs started spinning on the peg. I like the pegs so I am going to use gorilla snot to try and secure them. Don't misunderstand, I'm not bitching about the above issues. I made it home just fine after a run of idiocy on my part and a little bit of bad luck, but I do want those of you with the translucent plastics to know what gas on hot plastics can result in. I still love my Buell maybe even more, you know scars add character (I'm thinking its a sickness)  | ||

As a rule, I always grab a paper towel and hold it to the nozzle, to and from the bike... You've got my sympathies... | ||

When I picked up my bike the dealer made a big deal about protecting the translucent plastic from gas, and/or its fumes. They mentioned the plastic will melt with petroleum products. Ever since then I have been overly careful when fueling. | ||

I didn't know cracked plastics was a warranty Item... Damn.......... You think that would be covered under my extended warranty... | ||

extended warranties don't cover much. On my S3 it specifically mentioned not covering any body parts... | ||

If it was me and knowing this is a issue. I'd have the parts cleared and the problem is fixed. Gas would nolonger be a problem. | ||

Bads1 I would think that the chemicals in the clear would also pose an issue for the finish of the plastics. Even using the wrong cleaner can cause hazing. | ||

I also had my plastics replaced under warranty. My hubby noticed on both the air box and fly screen there were cracks at the mounting holes. I took it to the dealer and he definitely said it was under warranty. So new plastics for me. We're also very careful when we put gas in the tank. | ||

I thought about this a little bit today. If I remember correctly I don't think any of us that have the buell tank bag have had any cracks. I think the nylon mounting hardware prevents the airbox cover bolts from over tightening. | ||

I actually have rubber washers with a spacer that prevents over tightening. Buell sent them to the dealer after the second one cracked. It did great until I screwed up last weekend with the gas. So your thinking seems like it would be right in line with what Buell had as a solution. | ||

I have the same cracks on my xb with 1800 miles. Dealer ordered an airbox cover under warranty. | ||

That's a bad day, Speed, sorry to hear it. So let me get this right - If I have cracks around the bolt holes on my airbox cover or flyscreen - that should be covered under warranty? | ||

Crow tastes good. If a clear coat would act as a guard against fumes then it would make we curious as to why Buell would not implement it in production process to save cost in warranty. | ||

Actually those parts were painted by a friend of mine. He did these for Buell. Erik contacted me via cell phone and I got him in touch with Will,my painter. Those bike were done for Queensryche and VH1's save the music. Two complete bikes in 48 hours. If they are cleared though half your problems are gone.  | ||

just a reminder to those who do get their plastics replaced. Keep the rubber X. Plenty of folk here are dying to get a hold of one. | ||

Objective opinion: That translucent material appears to be junk. Using plastics around the fuel filler that are THAT vulnerable to fuel? I'd call that a conspicuous design flaw. I'm amazed. |
