2000 M2 7000 mi. Pretty much stock except teardrop air cleaner and custom freeflow exhaust. It started a few weeks ago. It would sputter or almost kill pulling away from a stop and also do the same at a low rpm. Then 12 June going to work thru downtown traffic it started again and after about 1/2 mile of it the engine started backfiring thru the carb and the exhaust- bad and would barely run or idle. Finally I gave up and pulled over to call for help. While waiting I went over the bike mechanically and electrically hoping to find a problem. It was 80-85 deg. and I've had the bike since last spring. I thought it was the carb but now I'm leaning towards a cam position sensor or open or short wire. I have a shop manual and am going to remove the cam sensor covers and use a heat gun on the sensor to see if it may be temperature related. Well after about !/2 hour waiting that day I thought what the hell and it started up and I drove the remaining 3 mi. to work then rode the 13 mi. home that night and I have rode it a few times since with absolutely no problem YET. So has anyone had the same type of problem or has anyone had a cam sensor go bad??? I realize an intermittent problem is the worse to diagnose. I really hope it just fails. I brought my brother inlaws trailer home in case I need it. Any ideas/help/info/is appreciated. Also this site has the best people I have yet to work with/ bounce ideas off/ or just talk with/ on the web. Jim. |

James to hazard a guess would be in the charging system. Battery, Voltage regulator, Stator or wiring. Joe |

It sounds like a sticking shut fuel tank vent problem. It will mimic a running out of gas situation with perhaps popping, backfiring and eventually stalling. To check this out the next time it happens, open the gas cap momentarily and see if it instantly recovers. |

I don't know much about the tubers but if it has a cam sensor then it should have a check engine light. If the sensor is going bad or just drops off it should throw a code. But I'm not thinking thats it because most things with a cam sensor once they go bad the engine "usually" wont run. It almost sounds like the ignition is breaking up a low rpm, when it happens if you just get on it heavy does it clear up? get worse? It could be the carb though to, if the venturi's are gunked up the idle might just be spitting fuel at the engine rather them misting it. causing a miss, backfire from a loaded exhaust (rich condition), if that where it it would only happen at idle speeds. Once you apply throttle it will spray form another venturi, but will still be rich. Hope this helped. |

Also add ignition switch to my guess. Joe |

It's been a week now without 1 miss or stutter. It has been cooler and I really haven't put many miles on it. It does not seem to be in the charging system and the batt. is new but it could be intermittent (Damn I hate the word). I'll keep in mind the tank vapor lock thought. This does have both an internal and cap vent. As for the cam sensor the shop manual suggests removing the cover and run it while using a blow dryer to heat it up a see if it fails (what i'm going to try today). As for the carb I haven't done anything with it yet but for the last week it has ran super with not even a belch or fart. I will also keep the ignition switch in mind, I have tried jiggling it while running. Well I'm still looking and keep the ideas coming in. All info is appreciated. Until it fails or I find the problem it sure drives a person somewhat loony. I think I'll have a cocktail and go thru the manual again. |

let me know about the hair dryer trick. We've done stuff like that at work for intermittent issues. you could also pull out the sensor and verify that the sensor teeth look ok, if a tooth is damaged it could cause erratic readings. Just some more food for thought. |

OK I have tried all the things I could but I have not had any problem for almost 2 weeks so I'm going to ride it to the S&S 50th and hope for the best. When in doubt I guess I'ld rather ride and break down than stay at home and wish I was riding. |

James I'm with you on that, anything is better than not trying. Joe |

OK Folks I think I finally got it. Loose connector going to the Ign. Coil. I tightened it Thurs. and so far she runs super. Actually I just pushed it on further but now I'm going to bolt it on. I'll keep ya all posted. |
