When I called H-D to schedule my first service and to get the ECM done, they told me it'd be $250 for the service. Damn, get me when I'm coming and going. They also told me I'm the first one to call for service in my area. Is everyone pretty much doing their own? If so, at what mileage? I've pretty much always done the service on my XB but they laid me a line about the 1125 and some metal chips nonsense...Thoughts? I remember there was a post a few eons back about the 1st oil change, anybody remember the thread? | ||

Michelle: Do it yourself. Follow the Owners manual. Keep your receipts, become one with your bike. Your Dealer is feeding you a line about chips. This engine is no different in that respect than your XB. Later Neil S. | ||

My dealer wanted 300 ?? I did it myself for 50 (oil filter and 3 qts. of Syn 3). There is some very helpful info that someone was kind enough to send me the link to, it shouldt be hard to locate with a search. The tips I followed that saved a lot of mess, wrap the kick stand with aluminum foil, as well as the muffler on right side, position kickstand in drain pan, and shield the oil flow on the left side. When you release the drain plug, the oil comes out with a vengance so be prepared. | ||

I made a HUGE mess the first time, as I wasn't prepared for what a PIA changing the 1125r is. That being said...with a little prep work it is much more manageable. +1 on the foil +1 the shield (I actually cut the bottom off the a plastic 1 gallon water jug to catch the kick stand side oil) +1 on putting your kickstand ON the cardboard mat, as opposed to around the kickstand (which I did the first time). The filter will always be messy since it sorta just runs down the side and all over the place. | ||

Did my own service today... 1) Rolled bike on large piece of cardboard. 2) Slipped a 1 Gal. plastic bag around kickstand and used blue painters tape to hold it in place at the pivot. Then put kickstand in center of drain pan. 3) Taped a piece of alum. foil just beneath the oil filter cover so oil would drain into pan and not down the engine case. 4) Taped another piece of foil just beneath the right side drain plug. 520 miles on bike. Left side drain plug was almost full of paste like sludge (for lack of better description) but no metal particles (grit) of any kind that you could feel with your fingers and nothing on the magnet. Looked through the vanes on the filter and didn't see any sign of metal filings, chips, etc. (Message edited by flh03rider on June 14, 2008) | ||
