Whenever the Low fuel light turns on on my bike, I find that if I weave/turn HARD LEFT, I can slosh some fuel over to the pump side and turn it off momentarily.

I haven't noticed it running funny until it runs out, when it sputters and dies.

I look like I'm out of control when I'm doing it, but it has let me get to stations at least on two occasions where I probably would have run out of gas otherwise.

This past Friday, the gas station turned out to be so far away that I had no chance no matter what I did.

Jose,

I have looked very hard at the Aprilia and the new Yamaha FJwhatever. The Aprilia is very tall, and I am 6 foot. But that Yamaha...that is the answer. So, I am waiting for the next Buell touring bike...my '00 S3T is running so good and has been for almost two years, I can't bear to part with her. I hope you get yours back on the road soon.

Jose,

you could get a futura or an FJR. But instead why not just get a used K1200RS. I too almost purchased a futura but didn't because the K had heated grips, shaft drive, REAL luggage, and rarity. How many K's do you see around. It also does not look like a Japanese bike which IMHO the futura does....

Everyone has an opinion,
Brad

Brad, Scott,Rt66

The FJ1300, the BMW's the Aprilia all share one thing in common:

I'm too short for them!

I saw an FJ1300 at VIR this past weekend, it's bigger/heavier than the Futura.

Sure, I can ride them, but if I'm in a unstable situation or doing parking lot type maneuvers, I'm not sure I can muscle the bikes to keep them upright with my toes.

I can get some Gene Simmons boots, or lower the bikes, but I don't want to go there.

I have enough problems with the S3, I have to get off it to back it up, I can't paddle it backwards. The Futura felt like it would be even worse.

The local BMW dealer is pretty far away, which is another strike against them for me.

The Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki/Aprilia dealer is about 15 miles away. I have a Yamaha/Triumph dealer nearby also, not to mention the HD/Buell dealers.

Thanks for the suggestions!

GO DUCATI IN 2003!!!

What, you gave up on the Buell racing effort?

There's stock, then there's factory stock The manufacturers are obviously using the AMA rules to their advantage with the deck height mess. But the 600 spec rules are still closer to the showroom stock bikes than the Pro Thunder rules, that's my only point about that.

When you see Tommy Hayden SPANK the whole 750cc Superstock grid on his Supersport spec 600, you know his bike is not "stock"

There is an option, it's called Formula USA, where they use the dyno to try to keep everyone honest.

But I'm sure people find their way around the dyno too, it's the nature of racing, the "unfair advantage".

Next year will be interesting, neither of this year's top two Ducati teams (AMS and Munroe) are planning on running the Pro Thunder Class under WERA. Munroe (Tom Montano's shop) is going Superbike racing from what he told me at VIR.

I doubt Buell will go WERA racing either, so it will just be FUSA Buell Lightning and maybe a few Firebolts in the FUSA 600 class next year.

Go FUSA Buell Racing!

Snail Pace it is then, with that wooden leg Paul :)

Hope it ain't broke bad. I did my left leg, in 1986. 550 Four Honda and an Austin Princess. Compound fractures tib and fib and a snapped fema. 10 weeks skeletal traction and finally a cast up to my bollocks for a few months after the hospital ! Still, I was 26 back then so I had a lot of female sympathisers. Well getting jeans on and OFF is not easy on your own in that condition ! Anyway, your leg will mend and Busa's are 'ten a penny'. Good luck Paul x

Jerome...I like the frame slider idea. I've contacted Intuitive Racing who manufactures sliders for most any sportbike with the exception of Buells...I got no response. I think a right side slider is all that's needed on the tubers. A $350 header and $300 airfilter are a tough price to pay for a get off! I've seen it done...there are "universal" kits available...but it'd be nice to have something made for our application.

Scott...My '96 rotor spotted then turned completely blue. My 2000 rotor has spotted a bit, but it still works just as good. The old style rotor I had worked just fine, too...but the carrier holes elongated.

I kind of really think that you guys/gals looking for tube frame sliders to protect the airfilter and headers should be looking at a form of a crash-bar instead of "sliders". The sliders typically are less than 3" long, and you'll have to go a bit longer than that to protect your race filter. But if you look at a clamp-on bent bar/brace with some teflon/delron/??? material then bolted to the slidable exposed edge of that I think you'll get the protection you want.

Think in terms of a roll cage, only sideways. Just my 2cents worth, if that.

And, no, I am not talking about crash bars like those big huge rectangular loops hanging off the front end of baggers. I am just talking about a three-legged tube cage to just enclose/protect the parts you want protected. Okay, I'm done. Unless someone wants to hire me.

Well, I got my answer to the funky running S3 last night, and both Jose and Dyna were on the mark.

I posted my question here after riding four miles back to work following lunch at home. That is when the bike started acting up a bit.

Then, that afternoon I left work and I rode two miles to meet up with my wife for a social gathering. An hour later (5:00 now) I get on the bike, fire it up and the low fuel light comes on. That is a total of six miles from when the funky behavior started.

I rode the bike two miles home and planned on getting gas later on. Total miles now is eight.

At 11:00 last night I decide to gas up. I leave my house and the bike is acting real funky. It makes it less than one mile and dies. I knew now that I was out of gas. I tried a variety of shakes, rocking and other methods to get somewhere but it was dry.

I pushed the bike two miles at night in 90 degree weather (this is in Phoenix) to a gas station since pushing it home would mean that I then still had to take the truck out with a can to gas it up. Besides, I didn't make it to the gym yesterday and I need the cardio workout. :)

So, I got THREE friggin' miles after the light came on. That seems quite insufficient. I know I have gone further before.

In 20+ years of street riding that is only the second time I ran out of gas.

Later,
Scott

Racers bending the rules??? I don't believe it :)

Reminds me af smokey Yurnick NASCAR story. Seems that Ol' Smoke was getting more laps between pit stops than most everyone else and they KNEW he was cheatin'. After gettin' torn down and inspected in great detail even removing the gas tank and looking in lots of other places the officials said " We can't find it but we know your doing it so this car is disqualified" After a rather colorful argument Ol' Smoke climbed in the car and with the gas tank still removed drove it back to the pits!

Jose

I had the same problems and more. Sometimes it would run OK but most of the time it had one or more of the following problems. Hard to keep running when cold (no fast idle circuit) always surging at steady speeds (dealer said they all do that) very long warm up period, over heating and detonation in hot weather and/or stop and go traffic total failure, of the fuel injection system and partial failure (would only idle or run wide open).

Thanks to Neil Garretson ,Robr and Brad Galbraith that all changed. Like You. reliability was my prime concern.

I was sitting on my front porch looking at my poor running S3-T with 8000+ miles just having given my local H-D dealer (Bridgeport H-D Stratford CT.) $300.00 to set the TPS and timing, when my wife walked up. “What’s up?, she said.

“I can’t make up my mind whether I should burn it, send it off a cliff, or take it to East Troy and dump it in their lobby”, I said.

She said, “But your S1-W has no problems. How come?”

“It has a carb, not this ill conceived and poorly executed FI system”, I said.

“You are an excellent mechanic, why not change it to a carb, she said.

With the guidance of Neil ,Robr and a carb from Brad, I did it. I bought all my parts from Liam Gleason at Danbury H-D Buell In Danbury, CT. Liam is a Buell rider as is the service manager Rod Pink. They have a genuine interest in Buell and I highly recommend them.

My 99 S3-T has now risen to the level of my 98 S1-W. I now can leave the house and ride with confidence. It has almost 20,000 miles with no problems.

Would I buy another Buell ? NO. I suppose that my friends at Danbury H-D
Buell could change my mind, but Buell would need to have a really outstanding bike at a time when great bikes are popping up all over the place.

Good Dealers are very hard to find. The Dealer I bought my S1-W from has given up the Buell franchise. The reason given me was that Buells are too much trouble and detract from their bread and butter big twin business. The Dealer where I bought my S3-T just does not get it. No one there rides Buells and their service prices are the highest I have ever seen. How about $110 to replace a rear tire. You buy the tire, they install it. I am glad to be dealing with Danbury HD Buell.

Bridgeport HD Buell will never see another dime of mine!!

My advice to anyone who must buy a FI Buell is to take a long test ride and make sure it is perfect before you give HD a dime. I just rode a brand new 2001 S3-T and it exhibited some of the same old traits that mine had. Especially surging at steady speeds. This was bought from Danbury HD Buell, the people I trust. Remember race kits do not cure drivability problems. I got burnt on that one.

My heart felt thanks to those that help me and the BWB for the vehicle to contact them. I now love both my Buells.

Do not let this hokey FI system relegate a great motorcycle to the back of the garage. CONVERT THEM & SAVE THEM.

Toyman

98 S1-W 9800 Mi. no problems

99 S3-T 8000 fuel injected Mi. BAD
12000 carburated Mi. GREAT

Toyman,

Don't let the Buell Lurkers see you calling it "hokey"!

"rinky-dink" or "half baked" might be ok, but "hokey" is crossing the line.........

Seriously, the thought has crossed my mind to convert it to a carb, but when it runs right, F.I. is pretty neat and convenient.

It ran great for almost a year & 10,000 miles until this weekend.

hmmm, 10,000 miles go by and I have problems. I had problems at 20,000 and 10,000 miles too.

Coincidence?

Ferris, the bisquit fire is pretty obvious right out my window. The smoke makes a pretty spectacular thunderhead that goes up 10K ft.

I'm pretty bummed about it, its toasted 300,000 acres of the most beautiful timber in the world, all because the enviromentalists wouldn't allow any developement, and even had all the roads decomissioned.

They, (the enviros) didn't want man to harm the forest, so now its burnt. Gotta sign off, I can't help getting enraged. At last tally, (last week) the expense fighting this fire has gone over 50 million dollars.

I need to praise a sponsor again I ordered a Tank mask and a tail guard from Sport twin 3 days ago after waiting months at my local dealer (Buell backordered them) Today I received them in the mail and installed them when I got home from work. The tank mask makes the Corbin seat fit perfectly no gap at the tail. It also covers all but one of the scratches from my accident...and it looks great.

Brothers and sisters: I'll post once more on the subject of my problem. My Buell will every now and then fire no spark. It usually happens after a short stop (i.e. filling station), or first thing in the morning, and once while in motion. The dealer couldn't find any problem 'cause it never failed starting the week he had it. I can't tow it to a dealer 'cause I know as soon as I get it there it will probably start fine. I'm at the point that I'm about to buy a bunch of parts and replace anything I can think may be doing this - a terrible waste and unhonarable method I know. Everything is connected, clean, unbent. It's not the ICM because I switched the Buell race one back to the never used stock unit and it still happens. I put new plugs in (10R12). Please, any ideas?

Problem - Starter will turn motor, strongly, but motor won't start. After repeated tries (over a period of about 20-40 minutes) it finally does start and runs fine, only to not start again later.

Bike - 2001 M2
Miles - @5500
MODS - Buell Race Kit since new. 42mm Flatside (installed one week before problem showed up {hmmm}
All wires, relays, coil, plugs/plug wires, battery, grounds, etc, look good.

I know no one can tell what it is for sure without seeing the bike, but if anyone has had this problem what was done to solve it?

Thank you, and I promise not to post on this subject again.

Blake - I have. I've also pulled the airfilter and saw the carb squirt gas with each twist of throttle. Man, it's frustrating because I can't keep it broke long enough to get it to someone who might know how to fix it.
