Have a buddy (he rides an R6) that is interested in a sportster that some guy at his work is selling. He looked at it and said it had some rust and looked well used. It has over 100,000 miles on it. Here is the description from the owner: FYI, here are the specs ... I am the original (and only) owner and bought the bike new from Space Coast HD 1998 Harley-Davidson Sportster Sport (aka XL1200S) 1,200cc (aka 72 cubic inches) of displacement Dual-plug heads and single-fire ignition 10:1 compression (must use Premium gas only) Dual-front disc with floating rotors Single-rear disc Around 100,000 miles, I replaced the stock cylinders with a Wisco Kit, which included new cylinders, pistons, rings, and wrist pins. I also replaced the valves, cams, and cam followers. I did NOT separate the bottom-end (cases). He told my buddy that the stock motor came with dual plugs in the heads. Is that true? The guy asked him to make an offer. What's it worth?

Correct - dual plug heads from the factory. It was a band-aid effort to improve flame travel and resistance to detonation in old-style heads that needed help passing newer EPA standards. As for what it's worth.....mebbe $1500? I dunno... It's gonna need a bottom-end soon if not now. That'll be $1500+. You can buy a new & much improved 'Sporty for under $10K. |

YES! Sportster sports had actual real engines in them. They came with all of that stuff from the factory. I was drooling over them for a long time. Then I took a Buell for a test ride. With a lot of miles, it proves it was taken care of. I would say somewhere on the order of $4000? |

The bottom end will go out soon, mine did at 45K. $3000 would be the absolute upper limit. |

"looked well used", "had some rust" has over a 100k. i would say no more that 2500.oo and expect to throw some cash. 10 yr old sportsters are all over the place for sale. Tell him to take the money he would spend on it. Put it down on a new one and get zero apr., far less headaches. |

Adrian, You might want to post this on the Critical Mass topic on this forum: it is the Harley corner of this site. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/348 043/348043.html?1213057582 |

I just looked through the sold items on ebay. It looks like they are selling for $4,000-4,500.00 with under 10,000 miles and in near perfect condition. In theory it is probably worth more than the $1,500 suggested earlier, but I wouldn't touch it for more than that, or maybe $2,000 at the most. In fact, unless you really like to wrench, that bike may be one to pass on at any price. There are so many decent ones selling for as low as $3,500.00. Why pay money for a potential headache? Lets say the guy wants $3,000. Why not just spend $4,000 for one with 90,000 less miles and nearly no wear? My '02 Cyclone was right around that price with only 6,000 miles on it and no rust to be seen. Bill |

I woudln't go higher than $1500. Anyways, those Sportster Sports were all that much faster than a regular 1200. What you paid for was the suspenion, which I'm sure is all used up at this point. |

Well I'm biased. I always drooled at those. They was a guy at my local shop that had one. He put rearsets and clipons on it. Those rearsets were beveled right down too. |

just sold one through the shop, with 14K miles on it, full service done on it, new brakes , it went for 4995.00 It was a nice bike, but it was 10 years old, and with the new rubber mounts, it took some convincing to get an owner to go to the older frame. The guy buying it is using it for a Mutant Redneck donor.... Should be a fun build |

I've got 64,000 miles on my 2001 Sporty. I have no delusions about what it's worth now. Figure I'll keep riding it till the wheels fall off. |

That's so stupid. Last of the good light frames and best engine offered. Pretty much as sad as seeing a Buell hacked for stupid choppers. |

Local guy here in S/E Kansas has a 1999 883 thats been turned into a 1200. Thunderstorm heads, jug's, cams etc, lots of chrome, progressive rear shocks blah, blah, 3,200 miles, about 1,800 since the conversion and only wants 5,750. Never ridden in the rain and always parked inside. Runs like green stink. I know because I've ridden it. |
