On the way home I got a beep from my Escort radar detector indicating low voltage. It was reading 10.8 I made a dash for home and watched the voltage drop. Usually as the bikes RPM's increase the voltage on the Escort also increases but it did not todays. The bike died about 2 miles from home. After disconnecting the possitive and negative terminals on the bike useing jumper cables we hooked up the bikes battery to Sara's car for 1/2 hour. I started the bike,and the Escort RD reading was 11.5v. Rode it home and again watched the voltage drop. Another issue that I have noticed for awhile now is that when I first attempt to start the bike it seems to have a hard time turning over, behaving much like a weak battery, then on the second punch of the started it fires right up.What is the protential problem, how do I check it and how do I repair it? Also I have 4 days left on my warrenty, what is the facotry policy on getting warrenty work done and who pays to get it taken to the dealer? I am very ignorant when it comes to electrical things, so please do not assume that I know anything about electrical stuff. I have this belief that electricity is a close cousin to vodoo. Thanks |

If it is still under warranty get it to the nearest dealer ASAP. Getting it there will be at your expense. |

As long as the REPORT of a problem goes to the dealer they should still honor the warranty. Any good service manager will write a work order before you bring in the bike.. |

Stator, Voltage Regulator and/or the "77" connector. Could be a classic triple play! |

A good dealer will come pick it up, assuming your not in in the middle of the north pole or something. The 06 Uly has issues with the voltage regulator, causing the stator to fail and melting the "77" connector. (Or is it the other way around?) Don't worry about your warranty. Hell if it expired last week a good dealer would goodwill it. |

Latest update. I got it to the dealer. Asked them to also check out the 77 coupler. They checked out the charging system and said the voltage regulator was bad and they needed to replace it. The service kid said that the tech checked the coupler and stated that it was ok. My guess is that the tech did just a cursory look and has no idea how this cheap little piece can ruin lots of other pieces. Anyway they did not have the vr but need to order it. I suggested that they could not take one of a Buell on the floor, but that justproduced a bovine stare until they said no. That just seemd to me to be the logical thing to do, but perhaps there is some regulation regarding doing this type of swap.I think I will go ahead and change out that coupler as was talked about in another thread. I still like the bike, but it is the first time that I have been stranded alongside the road since a cross counrty trip with my parents in 1959 when the carb float got stuck while we were traversing the rockies. |

The service kid said that the tech checked the coupler and stated that it was ok. Yeah, that's what they told me too after they diagnosed my stator as the problem and that the V/R was fine too. In my pic above you can see I had to cut it apart! How they could have checked it when it couldn't be pulled apart is beyond me... shoulda seen the look on their faces when the new stator didn't work either... That was the last time those buffoons touched my bike, I bought a new connector and V/R from another dealer and fixed it myself at my expense. Sorry for the rant but it is relevant. |
