Hello all! great forum. Quick Q's....... How many miles total on what year Uly? How many miles before you had any "issues" that needed to be addressed? Thanks! |

2006 XB12X 34,640 miles when I traded it in. The wireform clutch cable bracket broke somewhere around 10,000 miles, and the fan died around 27,000 miles. Both were replaced under warranty. Now I have a 2008 XB12XT; not enough miles to count, but it sure makes me grin a lot! |

Crusty-Can you start a new thread of a comapare and contrast 06 xbx vs 08 xbxt once you get a few more miles upon your new XT? |

06 only about 12,000 miles, only recall stuff eg, side stand bolts and BAS. I replaced the clutch wire holder as insurance and I also rerouted some of the wires per early posts. Thats all folks. Crusty-Can you start a new thread of a comapare and contrast 06 xbx vs 08 xbxt once you get a few more miles upon your new XT? |

06 Uly with 18,899 miles. somewhere around 12k I had the following replaced under warranty... Front rotor and brake pads(Pulsating Front brake) Timing cover and rivets Fuel pump (Fuel light would stay on) Cooling fan (bearing went) Rear rocker box gasket and vent BAS clutch cable Since then it has just been Oil and Tires and actually prior to that list it was just oil and tires. It seemed that all of that went out after I did a 3600 mile trip followed up by a 1100 mile trip. It was during the last trip that the fan went and all the other items started popping up. I am currently chasing an electrical gremlin that causes the bike to shut off during hard acceleration. |

Thanks for the feedback! I'm looking into an 06 Uly w/ 5k on it and I am a little concerned about spending any money on repairs. While they seem pretty reliable there are some "issues" that have caused others days worth of out of state problems. WHAT TO DO!!! lol |

'06 Uly with 48,500 miles here. Had to replace rear wheel bearings at 31,671 miles and clutch needle bearing at 42,476 miles. Should hit 50,000 miles within a couple of weeks. |

I have an '06. It is to me like a great pair of shoes, a very comfortable fit. My list of problems started early and was spread out over the first 20,000 miles. Since then I have done 7,000 miles with no problems at all. My list is in my profile page. I had an '05 City-X for 13,000 miles with no issues at all. The Uly would have lost me had it not been for BadWeB and the problem solving power within. Most of the issues were no big deal, my dealer handled them with no problem. My '06 bike's generation was the test bed for difficult to find problems the dealer would have to park the bike for days to wait for an answer. Through great communication we came up with resolutions to the problems here on BadWeB. Fortunately my dealer was receptive to suggestions and let me point out what we here found in real world testing. This solved my BAS problem before a reason for a recall was found. It resolved the reason for the brake pulsing problem. Brought me a reason to inspect my side stand before the recall and the bolts fell out. It pointed out the need for a front isolator when no one was sure of where the nasty vibes were coming from. I knew how to handle the cooling fan when it went into catastrophic failure mode 500 miles from home in mid summer. My clutch cable snapped at the handle and fellow BadWeBers showed me how to lube it so that it likely would be a long time before it will fail again. I found the wiring problem in the steering head in about two minutes because the folks here helped me. The uncontrollable floating idle was found and solved in about a half hour by of a few of us testing, adjusting, and communicating. Being a first year machine, and having been through worse with new cages, I anticipated a few problems and got more than I bargained for. In the process though, I have met many of the people from this web site who have helped me, and some I have been fortunate enough to help. I have been to a Homecoming event, several MarchBadness and Buelltoberfest events, and have been invited to many others that I simply don't have enough time for. I'm sorry....what was the question? AAAAhhhh....oh-yeah, issues with the bike. Yep. Help, understanding and solving issues, most important. Friendships and comrades, found here on BadWeB who are more than willing to help and great fun to ride and hang out with. If I were left alone to solve and repair the first time issues, you know the ones that make the service rep think you are nuts, the bike would have been gone a long time ago. But I love riding this Uly, it is a piece of engineering art work that when problem free(and it has been for many thousands of miles before and now) is the best two wheeled machine I have been matched with. Question should be "So, if your Uly had problems, would you buy another one?" My answer is, you bet!! |

2006 model Uly bought "new" on Jan 2nd 2008, now done 2,300 miles. I crashed it on Jan 12th so it was off the road for 2 months. Biggest problem has been the front engine mount collapsed at 615 miles Minor problems have been the exhaust can losing it's paint and rusting before 200 winter miles were done and the rivets pulled out of the belly-pan by 1300 miles, (now replaced by SS fairing screws and nyloc nuts) |

2006 Uly bought new July 2007. I have approximately 8300 miles. No problems so far. BadWeb has been an excellent source of information on the Uly. I look forward to meeting everybody at Homecoming. Kev |

FWIW, I've learned over the course of 3 bikes that my ownership experience is improved if I look for problems and address them before failures happen. I have certainly had a few issues with my Uly. The fan, fuel pump, and front brake come to mind. But I've also replaced the cables, rear wheel bearings and belt simply as preventative maintenance. I'll replace the front bearings the next time I change the tire. I rode a new Uly at the VIR Inside Pass event, and noticed that it vibrated less than mine. I'll probably put a new front isolator on mine to see if the vibes go down. The cable replacement in particular made a substantial difference, I had no idea how sticky they had gotten. |

'06 12K miles. Voltage regulator crapped out at 400 miles. Otherwise, she's only needed recalls and maintenance done. It has been a great bike and would have more miles on it if I didn't live in the snow belt. If you're shopping, some '06 owners had pinging issues they had trouble addressing. I don't know how you'd screen for that other than a test ride on a hot day. As I recall, symptoms were intermittent. |

'06 bought new in March '07, 9500 with about 1400/month commuting... lots of highway but with a few miles of seriously bad pavement every day. All OEM farkleless except for heated grips. BAS replaced under warranty despite no issues. Fan died at 7K'ish after a long illness. It was under warranty but I replaced it myself (via American Sport Bike) to save a day at the dealer. Loose mirror, loose airbox cover bolts early on fixed with Loctite. Thanks to Tipsy's misfortune I checked my rightside footpeg bracket yesterday and found one of the three recessed bolts missing (the deepest one). Must've vibrated out who knows when. Up front I kept the wireform clutch cable holder but rolled some aluminum inside it last month because it was cutting into the cable sheath. At the same time I stuck a rubber grommet under the middle of the Buell tall windscreen because it was rubbing on the fairing. So all minor issues not worth b*tching about. I run Amsoil and get great mileage. If you're in the market be sure your brain can tolerate the fan's wail. (issue from Day 1) IMHO, the noise it makes is completely out of character with the rest of the machine. I learned to accept it but I can't say I like it. The bike is big fun... buy one. Another thing, thanks to this forum, about a month ago I checked the VR connector but all was well, no arcing. I also pulled the rear axle to check bearings and corrosion. The axle stuck at first but some minor persuasion with a rubber mallet popped it loose immediately (thanks again to BW). No corrosion found. 08 with 2170 miles, commute on gravel/mud fire road to the pavement, then to Redmond everyday (except on ice/in deep snow in winter). At 38 miles the rear cylinder stopped firing, dealer replaced sparkplugs. At 1224 miles the rear bearings disintegrated. Dealer replaced under warranty. Run HD synthetic, get about 40mpg. Modes include touratech rack and boxes, kickstand foot, and oil cooler guard, parabellum 24 inch screen, tuono mirrors, and the darkhorse oil temp dipstick. |

06 with 48k since 1/06. First failure was front mount around 28k followed by oil cooler, clutch cable, low fuel sensor and rear wheel bearings. Not specifically part of the bike, but the latch for the top case failed after 30k of daily use. Lost the case. The replacement will be bolted on, not just latched. |

06 Ulysses, put new Dunlop D616 rear tire on at the 10,000 mile service and put new rear brake pads on at 16,000 miles and now have about 18,000 total miles on the bike and runs as good as new, maybe even better! I will NEVER-EVER trade this motorcycle!!! It's the best motorcycle I've ever owned or rode! It's a keeper! |

07 Uly: Joules Bought May 07, have 11,717 miles now Just put third rear tire, 2nd was Avon Distanzia 160 which tracked great on off-road and gravel but got about 30% less wear Not a single maintenance issue to date and I ride a lot off road, Moab Utah and the Rocky Mtns. Mods: Put on right side airscoop, taller windsceen, Catch-can, K&N filter with mods to airbox, GPS, larger grips, LED volt gauge, PIAA 110W bulbs, ammo can saddle bags, and I modified the clutch cable routing clamp. We had a Direct Link Dyno tune to Joules recently, picked up a couple ponies, got rid of low rpm stumbles and dropped engine temp considerably. Air scoop did a nice job of keeping fan from being needed most commute rides but now, it is even more absent from operation. Sitting on the work bench are a pair of 2008 Uly triple clamps to improve the stop-to-stop radius by 20 deg. I will do a fork maintenance seal rebuild when I pull them off and put on new front brake pads. ~jammer |

I had a headlight bulb H7 fail at 10,700 miles. PS. Of course I do all the prescribed maintenance, and some I learned from the dealership or my own experiences. I believe in preventative maintenance: lube all cables, check major fastners torque, use Loctite, since so little oil is used and I ride in severe conditions I use synthetics (AmsOil and RedLine) and change them 2,500-3,000 (where as on my Harley's I change less frequently and have two with over 70,000 trouble free miles) |
