A universal Uni's flow characteristics are comparable to a K&N universal - so I am wrong there - what I meant to say that the Outerwears flows better than the Uni and does its job well. The Uni & K&N filter filter at about the same with the uni actually having slightly worse flow velocity than a K&N for the same carb. A stack filter is but a pre-filter compared to anything else, however, the custom jobber I have filters at .0025 - which is way smaller than anything I or you can see - so I don't stress it. EZ |

I also have been looking for an aftermarket filter assembly...there is (as far as I can find)...nothing available...so last night, I bought a 4" car air filter unit from Autozone, machined an adapter to bolt to the carb and drilled, countersunk and screwed the filter base to the adapter after I milled the stock mount spigot off the filter base...sealed with devcon aluminum epoxy...now I have a neat little 4" round filter that uses pleated paper filter....It looks good and isn't TOO in the way...I'll do a ride test tonight...if it works out ok, I'll see if I can post some pics. Ram Pro Flo, Pro Series, EZ's, and The Custom 4" car - problem being out of all of those only mine will offer enough air flow to prevent restriction, which can be noticeable when jetted correctly. EZ |

I did the same thing. Had to go to 48/180 on jets and an XL needle. Once I get an O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe, I'm going to REALLY tune it! |

After talking with the Uni folk - I have more faith in my stack filter and less in theirs - lol - their tests involves baby powder sized particles and no smaller - that would be particles we could see - unlike 0.0025" - which you can not. EZ |

EZ, I think if a thin sheet of fabric were enough to adequately filter, everyone would be running them. How big is a single grain of baby powder anyway? Gbaz: Pro Series Intake Elbow Part # 29301-03Y $33.95 Maybe not as cheap as Home Depot PVC but it fits and will keep the filter out of your way. You'll have to order one as its a replacement part, it wont be 'on the shelf'. Appleton HD/Buell has been really good at getting obsolete parts. |

You can see a grain of baby powder if its on black paper - lol - this material was designed with a specific weave style and made with minimum restrictions - is it highly durable - as far as any cloth could be - that bugs you - not me - get some of that Uni filter foam sheet - rips just as good - lol - or stick one of those 4" filters on - they sell a k&n that size - I'm sure of it - seen it sold in auto parts stores. I'd cut my stack down to half and use it as well with the k&n 4" system - unfiltered - to kick a bit of the charge in quicker as well, but you swap out the maximum air charge you get from the stack, and will probably have to jet a bit lower on the main. How important is it to put a breather on that fitting that used to go into my air cleaner from the PCV fitting? Well, it's too late. I put one on. I also put one on my horn intake because it says to point it to the rear or put a hose on it to keep stuff from getting in. |

Erik, I started with Appleton, and they didn't have any of the elbows...but they did give me a few phone numbers of other dealerships to call...(thank goodness for unlimited long distance ) I found one at Nassau County HD in New York....Of course I immediately ordered it...will be here on Friday!! Ordered a black Unifilter from Dennis Kirk to go with it... The 4" car filter does work well enough, but it is in the way too much...I am real short legged and my knee is RIGHT THERE!! ..oh well ....you got to break a few eggs to make an omlet. |

Wooo Hoooo!!! UPS just came in!!! got my new elbow....and my new Uni Filter. The UNI part number UP-5245 fits the elbow PERFECTLY!!! Bye Bye functional and I think quite good looking 4" car filter. Hello filter that will not be in the way of my knee. Note: as is my custom...I will be more than happy to pay it forward to the needy |

Ok...the blast is progressively running poorer. I check the carb boot and find it cracked. Buy a new one from Cycle City Honolulu, wait two weeks for it and install. It still runs crappy. Backfires, won't idle... What should I check next? Is there a system to installing a new carb boot? It still seems to run lean... Please help... |

Well, the obvious answer would be incorrect installation of the intake boot. The carb and intake 'lock' into the boot. Then the clamps need to be snugged down. Not so tight they mushroom the rubber though. Another possibility is the vacuum plug on the carb has come off or split. That will also cause problems. (On some carbs this vacuum port may come with a solid, non-open fitting or no fitting at all since this port is only used on California bikes). Did you do anything else to fix the bike or was anything else done to the bike just before the backfiring? PS Sorry, I moved your post to here. More threads=more confusion.} (Message edited by gearheaderiko on May 31, 2008) |

Fixed it... All is peaceful now... er.. except for that thump thump thump. I checked the carb boot about half a dozen times and it still missed and backfired. So... got gas... got compression... got spark? Bought a new NGK DCPR8E. Glad it was the plug and not the ignition. Running like a dream! I'm gonna put some jeans on an disturb the peace! |

I'm on a quest to significantly raise fuel efficiency on my Blast, so I'm looking for smaller than stock jets. Anyone have any jets around that you would sell and mail for cheap? I'm looking for a 165 or smaller main jet and a 42 or smaller pilot jet. I'll post this in the wanted section as well. I'm interested in multiple jets for both pilot and main since I'm going to tamper around with different combinations and see how the beast runs. Thanks ahead for any willing sellers! |

If you run it too lean you will have all sorts of problems, backfiring, running hot, possibly burned valves. If you really want to try and get the most, put it back to stock. |

Ditto to Swampy's thoughts. I once ran a Chevrolet 350 too lean trying to get the most mileage out of every drop of fuel and blew a hole in the passenger side exhaust manifold (the stock heavy cast iron one) about the size of a silver dollar. I don't think any leaner than factory is a good idea. But, on the other hand, maybe with an aluminum head and an oil cooler to keep the temps down... and high test fuel... well wait, at that point I think think we've defeated the purpose... |

i have never messed with a carb before so these question's could be very dumb. when shimming the needle, do the shims go under the needle as to raise it away from the inside of the carb ? oh and do i need a new carb gasket and /or float bowl o ring or not? and could anyone tell me what kind of screws are in the carb. i want to replace them with allen heads but since this bike is my only vehicle i really cant pull them out then run to the store. thanks a bunch p.s. i have a v&h and a k&n. 45/175 + 2 #6 washers is what i should do , right? |

Yes - under the needle, nothing else needed - screws someone else needs to answer - you'll also have to loosen the side bracket screw - you may have to turn it into a flathead screw to do so, and yes your PS is correct. EZ |

Will running a 165 main jet on a 2002 model (stock is 170) without changing the slow jet really create overly lean problems? The last few times of looking at my spark plugs suggest I'm actually running rich. Everything is stock except the K&N air filter in the airbox. Maybe I should try leaning out by setting the float height a bit leaner to decrease the amount of fuel in the carburetor. Not sure if that would result in any noticeable improvements. I think keeping the slow jet stock and decreasing the size of the main jet might prevent any issues of backfiring, rough starting, etc. |

Entirely possible the enrichner is not coming completely off (choke partially on all the time). I wouldnt mess with the float, but you could to see if its at spec (but seriously I wouldnt mess with it at all unless you suspect a problem with it). You could also pull the air cleaner off to see how well it runs. That will give you some indication if you can go leaner (assuming of course that the K & N + stock airbox is still somewhat restrictive-I've never tested it). |
