Long story short...I tried once again to conquer mud. This time, mud reigned victorious.

Bike slammed down pretty hard on it's left side and then came to rest one hundred eighty degrees opposite the direction of travel...on it's right side. We were in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, so imagine my dismay once I determined that the left side foot peg assembly had cracked in two places, sheered two bolts in the frame and was no longer attached to the bike. Did I mention we were in the middle of nowhere? From what I'm told, my Triple Lindy off the bike was in the high nines ; )

Fortunately, I was riding with some fantastic guys who were prepared for the worst and got me back on the road.

Here's the temporary fix; These two straps took me 100 miles to my new destination...my parents garage. I have no place to wrench on the bike in NYC so I figured I might as well get the bike to the same venue as my toolbox.



These are the two bolts that sheered off:



I will have to try to remove them with an easy-Out tomorrow. Once those two bolts are removed, it'll only take a couple of parts to get back together. Hopefully, the bolts will cooperate with the Easy-Out.

Collateral Damage...the least of my worries.


It's going to take some days to get the parts, and I have a 12 day trip beginning Sunday (a week from today). Hopefully, the parts will be delivered and waiting for me when I return from said trip. I was planning to leave for Homecoming just two days after my return. The timing will be tight.

And to think I thought today had gotten off to a bad start when I lost one of the two bolts holding the beak/GME Piaa light bar in place. Thankfully, there were plenty of Zip-Ties on hand.

Guess I forgot the Loctite!

Those screws had loctite on them on my bike when I had to remove them. You might want to heat up the frame a bit with a blow dryer or heat gun to soften up the loctite a little prior to backing them out. (makes it a whole lot easier) Nice job with the straps, by the way. I may have to pack a couple of those in my luggage from now on just for that purpose.....

Ladies, our Ulys are not offroad bikes..no matter how badly we wish they were. When they go down , they go down fast and hard...especially if you have done any dirtbike riding in your life because what they do is totally unexpected.

For instance, going through a mud puddle, old habit is to go around the edge because it is not as deep, unfortunately it also isn't flat, angled, there are no side knobs on Uly tires so the front end immediately washes out. They are geared too tall stock so ya do things a little faster than ya want to and the steering angle is too steep to be an actual dirt bike.

Don't be offended, they just aren't dirtbikes. ( By the way, I have a new gear shift assembly if ya need one and those pegs and subassembly parts ain't gonna be cheap :-) ) )

If I admit that it isn't a dirtbike, can I still treat it like one sometimes since I own it?

It does a good imitation within reason and pushing limits when you have friends to bail you out is part of the fun.

I did buy a used ktm125 for some actual mud work.
And to be fair, the first time I dropped the uly was while skirting the edge of a grey marl puddle. Beyond slippery. So there is that.

Heating the frame should help the bolts come out as said above. Hell letting the bike idle a while should get the heating started then maybe the hair dryer.

Last I checked, a decent new dirtbike cost around $7000.00 plus.

Not really THAT big a difference, especially if one bought their uly used, which I didn't.

A little good news...the two sheered bolts are out! The one that didn't break off cleanly was a bit of a bitch to drill, but I got it eventually. Pneumatic drills rock! By the way Prowler...thankfully, there was no Loctite on these. They came out rather easily once drilled. FYI...Size #1 Easy-Out did the trick with a #40 drill bit for a pilot hole.

Khelton...probably just semantics, but we weren't off road. We were on a dirt road that just happened to become a mud pit in the wake of a thunderstorm : ) But I was having second thoughts as I progressed up the "road." Should have listened to my gut.

Old_mil...yes, I would greatly appreciate your old mirrors and will gladly cover the shipping! Email has been sent. Thank you VERY much!

Headed for the train back to the city in a bit and will look up the necessary part numbers as soon as I get to my apartment.

MiamiUly - You're right, it is tempting to use it as a dirtbike and unfortunately I doubt I will stop succumbing to that temptation completely.

Tipsymcstagger - I see and did the same thing. Technically I wasn't "offroad" although the "road" I was on sure felt more like "offroad".

I would have loved to have had the 450 Buell dirt bike. Still upset they killed that program : |

The Muell Blast project goes to mech this week for the timing chain and lighting upgrades, then the body work will begin. I WILL ride the hell of that off road.

Thanks Rat...fortunately, I have the parts manual. Unfortunately, you are correct. I've made a few calls and this part is not in stock locally. I placed an order earlier today...hopefully it'll arrive in time for my planned Homecoming departure.

Maybe a piece that bends when the bike falls over instead of cracking would be better suited if you're going to call your product an "Adventure Bike?"

Hmmm a little JB weld.... sorry I couldn't help it.

Billet replacement pieces should allow some bend or they'd need to be ti or metal.

Chad- as for $7000 dirt bikes, it just kind of amazes me, but they are racers and actually $7400 or $7500 (There must be a color option.)

DRZ was on the list, ktm525exc was on the list and those are pricey, then I rode the uly and said fugg it.

Also just picked up a used motox bike to jump and generally beat on and maybe even get on a track again.

Wow, sounds like a pretty hard crash. I'm amazed at how durable these bikes are, being so heavy and all.
But I'd rather have that piece break off than bend or break something in the main frame. It looks to me like it's designed to shear off for that reason.
left bracket for $159 is dirt cheep.... well almost anyway. That part would be $600.00+ on a BMW.

I think I'm missing your point Chad.

The footpeg bracket is mounted to the frame. How would it crack the engine case if it were to bend?

Johnboy, I must be in the minority...but not only do I like the look of the stock Lollipops, but I also have the best rear visibility through them vs. any other set of motorcycle mirrors I've ever had!

I'm with ya now Chad. I still think the foot peg bracket could be designed with some "give" without potential for damage to other parts of the bike though.

Anyone here carry a spare shift and/or rear brake lever?
