Hi everybody-
Been riding a fair amount, plus my 18 year old son bought a 1978 cb750 and is learing to ride. So less posting for me than usual. My bolts seem to be holding up. I think the bike does vibrate a little more through the handlebars and frame than it did before I put on the third heim joint. Try this at a stoplight sometime: Sitting there, idling, apply the front brake. I used to notice an increase in vibration at the hadlebars, like I just made the frame stiffer when I applied the brakes, but now I notice this much less. But no break so far! Swampy- not too many people showed up at my place but I was told it was a record turnout for the blessing. It must have been a good day for weddings, I had other friends who also were away for that reason!

I saw a 1978 CB 750 for sale recently, that was set up as a cafe racer! It really looked great, the only down side was the price for it was $7000

Anyone else having problems with these. Just put a new one on the wifes Blast last month. She complained of a increase in vibration and I just went and looked at it and the center is tore out just like the last one. It looks just like a FXR front mount. Has anyone ever tried to put a Velva-ride mount in one of these.

It happens, not common, but not unusual. Seemingly, those who have problems with one, seem to have a problem with the replacement?!
I dont know if the Velva Ride will fit.
Blast parts book doesnt show the same part number.

Note - tighten from the bottom and torque from the top - usually when you reach 2 1/2 threads above the nut. Make sure washer is clean - nothing to stick to the rubber and twist it.

Three months without breaking a bolt. New Record! Actually, about 1,200 miles if I remember my mileage. Looks like the third tie bar mount helps. Been also riding my son's 1978 cb750... wow, a grown up bike. Maybe the cityX wouldn't be soo bad... I saw a Ducati Monster for under $2,000 in the paper...But then I'd have to get a new Jacket, Gloves, Helmet, backpack and online persona. Everything I own is Buell or H-D. My only ever email is Buellboy492, how could I ever explain???? Sorry off topic.

Thats good news Buellboy! While not the first to install the 3rd tiebar, you are the first (I believe) to install it to solve a motor mount bolt problem. While not conclusive, it certainly indicates that it helps.
The Ducati monsters are very tempting, but there are cheap tube frames and XB9's out there too.

Aww Dang.
It Broke Again. Right at 10,000 miles. I took apart the isolator this time and made sure there was no side to side torque on it before tightening it down. The threads are still tight, no need to helicoil as far as I can tell. It always breaks on the inside bolt, the hard one to get at. I have already taken the old ones out and installed the new ones. Takes me about 3 hours but I am really slow- listening to music and drinking homebrew.

Buellboy492,
Did you get it back together already?

If not carefully check the way a clean 7/16 bolt threads into the hole. Look to see if the bolt will move around in the hole when it is threaded in. I really think that it has a lot to do with the hole being too large or oblong.

If you want I can find some way of getting the helicoil kit to you.

An easy way to get the drill to the bolt hole is to remove the fork leg that is in the way of the hole.

I ran a clean bolt in, there is zero play. I have a bolt that I cut grooves in with a dremel cutoff wheel that I use like a tap or thread chaser to make sure things are clean before buttoning it all up. I am almost resigned to just break and repair this recurrent problem with this bike. And yes, I do realize the futility of doing the same thing every time and expecting a different outcome. I could probably do the whole job in 2 and a half hours.

I'd really like to know why you keep breaking them.

Buellboy-

It has been suggested by one of our most esteemed BadWeBers that you may want to contact Buell Customer Service. 414 343 8400. I know it by heart. Don't ask why.

There are apparently one or two VERY experienced Buell techs on hand at CS. Maybe they can point you down a road we haven't considered online.

Gearheaderico: lasted 1200miles.
Swampy: no, no additonal threadlocker. There is a yellow paste on the bolts from Buell. I have to hit them with a torch to get them out. I have always assumed this was threadlock. I have used red threadlock on these bolts in the past, it makes them really, really difficult to remove when they break.
Saro, thanks! This will be my first call the them. My dealer is weird about Buells.

Haven't broken yet, but that is probably because I haven't been riding much. I had minor surgery on my foot- removal of an old screw, that's slowing me down a little. I think I have put about 100 miles on since the last repair. I only work 5 miles from home, and I really don't get to ride anywhere but work... and on Sundays I get to add about 20 extra miles for "motorcyle church" at the coffee shop every other week. Nothing like the mileage disposal units some of you guys and girls are!!!

I'm reviving this thread!

My front isolator is showing signs of needing replacement a year ago! How often do rear isolators go bad?

Isolator's ordered. They tell me they're supposed to say 5-7 days, but that it's really taking about 2 weeks. Meanwhile, I should be OK to ride, right?

As soon as you feel excessive vibration you now its time to stop riding.

Excessive vibration to a Blaster is like excessive mud to a pig!

Got it. It's fine now as long as I keep RPMs lower than what you normally ride ( < 5000 or so). The rubber is all there, just cracked.

I have gone since last August w/o breaking one. this is approx 1,800 mi since last break. I know that is not a lot. But it is only 5 miles to work. Hey, this Blast is now officially the longest I have ever owned a bike. I also have never had to replace brake pads on any other bike. I have done it on others, but never HAD to due to wear! I must say I have had more fun working on my Blast than I could have imagined. Thanks to everyone who helps with this board.

Nope! Mounting bolt is fine! I should get two broken bolts because I reused them, but it's just the rubber this time.

I changed out the front isolator this afternoon. I had gone to the Buell shop to get a new front brake lever...(bike fell over in a parking lot...funny how a lever will bend real nice..but break if you try to straighten it)...anyways at the Buell shop, I got a chance to talk with one of the mechanics about how I have this wierd on and off rattle. He assured me the engine made nothing but normal Harley noises and to run the crap out of it and don't worry.

As he was giving the bike the once over, he immediately spotted the front isolator as being bad...So I bought a new isolator and the afore mentioned brake lever and installed them.

I own a engine hoist, so it was easy to lift the front end...and the isolator was suprisingly easy(ish) to install...Man what a difference!! The bike runs smoother than ever..and the vague uneasyness it had if I ran across paint stripes is gone...it was cracked and hard with 3500 miles on it..actually the isolator looks almost exactly like the isolators we use in A/C work...not designed to work in vertical tension..designed to work in lateral compression..throw in the stress from coupling the engine to the frame...and quite a bit of heat...riiiiiippppp.

I drew a design for building my own that will not have problems in tension..(based on a popular isolator used in off road trucks)..couple of hours of lathe work and maybe 30 bux for materials : )
