Terri is home! Tufts/ New England Medical Center found the problem. Terri has a Post Viral Neuropathy. It is easily treatable, but it may take a while for her to recover completely. She is on a regimen of steroids (Medrol Dose Pack), a nerve inflammation reducer (Neurontin), a drug to ease the negative effects on the stomach that the steroids will have (Omeprazole), and a muscle relaxer (Flexeril). Terri is still limited in her functions, but there is some improvement already. I don't have the words to express how relieved we are. We both want to thank everybody for all the Positive Energy and the Prayers. You all helped us get through a very tough time. It's times like this that really bring out the qualities of Badwebbers. |

Bear in mind that PVN is typically a clinical diagnosis, based upon symptomatic presentation. Did they ID the involved virus? (No need to share the ID) While i am very happy for you both, be sure to ask how the pyhysicians arrived at this diagnosis- corticosteroids, being strong anti-inflamatory meds, will improve symptoms of any inflammation; however, in the immunocompromised patient, they can cause symptoms and actual infection to worsen. Again, I'm certainly NO doctor, and only a physician is qualified to make diagnoses, but you have every right to ask how said diagnoses were arrived at. The meds that Terri has been prescribed diminish symptoms. I am absolutely stoked that she'll find releife, and, in finding such, her odds at recovery (if only due to heightened spirits/positive outlook) will increase! Follow the Medrol down-cycle to the letter, and be prepared for some limited (psychological) depression for a couple weeks after cessation of same. Not a bad time, then, for a week or two of medical marijuana. (Zany though it may sound, such use is far less detrimental to cerebral chem. functions than most prescribed antidepressants, most of which act by an uptake inhibition mechanism, which can eventually turn the parent gland into a raisin. cannabis has no such long-term effect) |

different family of steroids- diametric opposite, in fact. anabolic steroids were initially developed to a large degree, to counteract the muscle-wasting associated with corticosteroids. such muscle-wasting isn't even noticeable, and is immediately reversible, for indications such as described by crusty |

Thank you Capt Obvious! It's a joke to help keep the mood light after such a heavy event. Here's a hint j/k = just kidding |

Easy, Francis. The j/k (new to me, as I don't "IM") might easily have been meant for the '...kick your ass' segment. just trying to ensure that others don't misunderstand the family of steroids she's on. A light is the ticket, good call. |

Thank you Crusty for sharing the good news! Terri will still be in our thoughts for a complete recovery. It probably doesn't matter now, but it would sure be great to hear about the Homecoming trip she would be able to make. I know she wants to make it on a Buell! |

THANK YOU ALL!! I can't tell you how much your well wishes and prayers have meant to me. Each time I talked with John on the phone while I was in the hospital, he would read me the latest posts in this thread. I know your support has been a big part of my recovery process. Although I still have limited function of my limbs due to the electric shock pains, I'm improving. I'm hoping to be back to work on Monday or Tuesday, but the BEST part is being home with John and my daughter, Andrea (who got her motorcycle license while I was in the hospital!). I can't wait to see you at Homecoming! Thanks Again!! |
