Hello guys;

I just picked up a really sweet 98 S1W.
It's white with white frame and wheels.
The former owner on the title was
Ronald Moseley of Zephyr Hills , Florida.

Does anyone know how to reach this guy??
(I have tried directory assistance and the internet).
I would like to know what has been done to the bike.I can see that it has a race kit and some other trick parts, but, I would like to know what else.
The guy was obviously very meticulous about the bike, so I assume he was probably part of some Buell organizations.
The S1 seems much stronger than my race kited S3, so I think it may have other mods.
Does anyone know what the horsepower of a race kitted S1 would be ??

Ralph - thank you. I think I'll try 1500 grit, I have some right now, and see if it works.

I have sideplates on the way thanks to fellow Badwebbers.Still looking for an S-1 gas tank.I have a large S-1W tank to trade if anyone is in need.Nice white tank with VG paint, minor decal bubbling.Roc,have you checked with Stuart at Deeley's.He has found me all kinds of S-2 stuff before, and Canadian exchange makes for some good prices.I know some guys even swapped in S-3 legs cuz they are much cheaper.

FMJ,
If you need a small tank, I have an extra one that I picked up on eBay. It's in ugly shape, with blistering labels and scratches. Was planning on eventually restoring it via custom paint job. You are welcome to borrow it though. :) It is devoid of gas cap, but does have a petcock. Let me know.

Jdog. On hp for these bikes, it varies widely. My stock S1W dynoed at 78hp and 74ft of torque. Some are in the 80's, just depends. That 101hp at the crank claim is just that a claim.

Dear Buellers,
I am faced with a unique problem,my 2000 m2 is behaving strange. I fear my tranny is toast. When I ride the bike, it will on occasion lurch like the clutch has been pulled in then released. It wont do it every time only once every 5 times or so. I have adjusted the clutch, I also have changed the tranny oil every 3,000. This past time it was full of metal flakes on the magnet. I think I have lost a tooth or something. I'm not the greatest gearhead, but I think this could be big bucks. Should I just sell the m-2? I have no idea how much this repair could run, I still paying for the bike and don't want to fork out a $1,000 plus for repairs. Any help would be appreiciated! Dean

Does it lurch like the engine revs up, or lurch like the engine cuts out?

From what I've seen, Budo has a point; however, careful tuning can make a big difference in performance compared to the bike's as-delivered state of timing and carburetion. This may depend on your specific location/elevation. Ask Aaron. He's had to adjust timing on some bikes by a surprising amount. Can make a big difference.

JDog, I'd be surprised if your race kitted S1W wasn't 85 RWHP or more. Check out the dyno charts in the knowledge vault. The BIG difference that the race kit makes is in the mid range, like a 10 RWHP increase.

When it cuts out it doesn't rev up, it acts like you cut the power then wham you have power!

Freewaystreak: this post may be of interest to you.

Repair time: under 3 hrs. It's pretty simple to pull the gearbox out of one of these things. Cost of parts: I don't remember exactly, but around $200, and I believe I changed a shift fork or two while I was in there.

Freeway,

If not related to any specific gear, it could be your secondary drive sprocket's splines (they engage the tranny's output shaft) are failing. A new sprocket will usually fix you right up. No big deal and not too expensive, but have a knowledgeable mechanic change the sprocket for you. There is a bearing on that output shaft that doesn't like to be abused from banging on the reverse threaded nut to get it loose. Or from trying to force a new sprocket onto the shaft.

On this tranny problem it almost feels like when you double clutch. Once I heard a popping sound. Haven't heard it since.

It only seems to happen in first gear, although when cold the last couple of times I wonder if the tranny was cutting out or if I was just getting the usual Buell coughs and spits.

Aaron and Blake,
Thanks for the input, I love the bike and would rather repair it rather than trash it. I'll keep you posted. Have 20,000 on it and would like to see the odo turn over 100,000.

Freeway,
Ahh, "like it's cutting out"... I think Hoot had it pegged which is why he asked if it was cutting out.

That would probably be your kickstand safety switch. That's the easiest and cheapest and simplest thing to fix. Dealer should even possibly give you a recall switch if yours was never replaced. If you don't care about the safety aspect, you can just short the circuit (pull connector and jumper the two wires, or simply cut and join the wires). Your choice. :)

Clarification, the '00 bikes already should have the new kickstand safety switch. So you simply need a new one. Dean, your profile is blank. :) (hint)

Freewaystreak...

Check the primary chain tensioner as well for a split backplate... though it sounds more like you have what Aaron pointed out. You will have to remove the whole primary cover for this (not a bad job). Replace the tensioner with an upgraded part while you have stuff apart regardless ($15 or so).

Split backplates on the tensioner are not uncommon, and generaly result in bad noises and hard downshifting, and other transmission weirdness. Once parts start breaking off and floating around, any number of strange symptoms could appear.

Don't panic. These trannies are very easy to work on.

Two Buells:
That tiny-ass oil filter on the 'Bolt worries me a bit. It doesn't look like there is enough clearance to get a larger filter on the bike. As I recall there is an oil fitting VERY close to the filter. If you find one, please post it. I would be willing to try a different one.

Chainsaw,

The company that has millions of dollars at stake becasue of that "little oil filter" is not worried at all. Now their lack of worry is based on testing and data evaluation. What are your fears based on?

Ralph - the 1500 grit was a bit fine, so I also used some ultra-fine metal polish. I used the polish with a strip of towel in a shoe shine type motion, to avoid flat spots. 1000 grit probably would have been best.

Sounds like the odds are about 50-50 wheither or not my fork will continue to leak, we shall see. I thought it worth the gamble when the other option is around $500 more expensive.

I heard that you do not need the HD fork seal tool to get the seals over the lower arms. Instead you can use a plastic bag, the one the seals come in works well, and some fork oil to ease them on. I'm not sure this works, but a bike mechanic who is generally considdered very good was the sorce.

Blake, Anon and Chainsaw, I'd just like to go to a local auto parts store and get a filter maybe a little better than the OE filter and save myself a hundred bucks. (everytime I go to the damn dealer I see something "Buell" that I don't have and have to buy It.........)

Blake and Annony:

It seems the filter is that small not by milliion dollar design, but by size restraint. It looks like the biggest filter that can fit, between the oil fitting and the chin fairing. Would they put it out there if it was crap? Probably not. It is the smallest oil filter I think I have ever seen! Looks like a toy compared to the quart size filter on my 72 GMC Jimmy (I know apples to oranges, 5 quart cap. vs. 2.5 quart). Bigger must be better though...Right? ;)

...by the way, that filter is so small my spiffy chrome-ish HD Small-Ass Oil Filter wrench doesn't fit it! Had to use a cheesy but effective Craftsman adjustable rubber strappy thangy to loosen it! Damn "The Man" for making me buy another tool! :)

The reason I want another filter choice is that I am moving to Japan and ordering "Buell" parts is both expensive and a PITA. Something by Fram or Bosch would be nice.

AMSOIL has a Filter for the Blast (same filter as the XB) Part# SMF-132

Hey all,
I'm still having trouble with my '00 X1. I've got a race ECM, TPS rezeroed, and a supertrapp can.
Problem is my bike bogs down when I twist it wide open and is definately down on power. It sort of bogs for a second or two, then the power seems to come on and it starts to pick up, but it still dosen't seem as strong as usual. Midrange throttle running seems perfectly normal with a good strong punch as long as I don't twist it wide open.
I think I may have narrowed the problem down to only the open loop portion of the F.I system, because the bike only bogs at WOT and right off idle.
Anyone ever experienced something like this or have any ideas? This is a recent problem, been happening for a couple months now.
Thanks for any thoughts...I'd take it to the dealer, but I have no confidence in them being able to performance tune my bike, especially as the problem is somewhat intermittant.
