Went out for a little ride today and all went well until I turned down my street on the way home. I rounded the corner and hit the throttle to my surprise the bike bogged out and shut off. Attempted to re-start and nothing. It cranks but no fire. Had to push it up the hill about three blocks. Let it sit for a while and still wont fire. I just changed the plugs a few weeks ago. Funny thing is I don't hear the fuel pump prime when I turn it on. I hope it's not a bad fuel pump. I looked at the service manual and it looks like a pain to change. Any ideas? |

The wiring on the XB line, especially the earlier years was prone to chaffing. The result was frequent intermittent shorts. I would start out by checking the ground wire from the battery, and other systems grounds. Then check for blown fuses. If you find one, make a short tester by wiring a 12v bulb to a blown fuse. Install the short tester in the socket from which you took the blown fuse. If the Light glows brightly you have a short. If not, try pushing and pulling on the wires in that circuit in an attempt to re create the short. This will cover about 90% of the problems like yours. Let us know what you find. Shouldn't be hard for an electrical tech to figure out.

When the problem first happened I looked at the fuse box cover and didn't see a fuse for the fuel pump so I kind of discarded the idea. I went and pulled every fuse out and found the fuse for the ECM was blown. Replaced it and the bike fired right up. I just used a multimeter in the blown fuse socket to check for a short and was not able to re-create a short by moving any wires around. I threw a pack of fuses in the tray under the seat in case it happens again. And if it does I'll take a much closer look. In my job we don't use fuses so sometimes I forget to check them. You mentioned the problem happened after turning a corner. Try checking for a short again while turning the handlebars both ways. Some people have found abraded insulation on wires around the steering neck area shorting out. |

My bike (99 X1 Lightning) had been sitting for the winter. Unfortunately the trickel charger was knocked off, so had to put a new battery in. Now when I turn the key & flip the switch, I don't hear the fuel pump prime. I did check the fuses, all are good. Any sugestions. |

Even though its a new battery: First thing to do with ALL Electrical problems is to check battery voltage. AGM batteries must have 12.7vdc. Then check connections;Bad connections such as loose or corrosion can normally be found to be the problem. Did you bump, move or disconnect anything when you replaced the battery? |
