Yep happened to my 2008 in 700 miles. By the time I noticed anything at all (smoke) The cable was toasted. Toasted so bad that the remnants of the springy thing are embedded in the rubber and there are parts that are white like charcoal. It must have happened on the highway. So there is a new springy clampy thing out now, or am I supposed to make something? |

New one, part number N0012.1AAA. That, and a new clutch cable should be a warranty deal. |

New part (much heftier) replaces the old wireform thing. Easy to swap out. I was lucky and caught mine before there was damage to the cable. |

Just like Olenuf-I swapped mine out on Uly and Scg before problem. Cheap insurance, particularly when I go on long rides out in the country. |

No - 08 has the same part I think. Whatever part it is, it is just as crap as the older model part. Broke two on my 08 Uly and replaced with a "P" clip. |

That's what I thought too, until I smelled something burning at about 700 miles. Maybe the XTs got the new part. Makes no sense to me. The fact that they went to a new, heavier, part tells me Buell knows there is a problem if you leave the old one on. Wouldn't it be cheaper to install the new parts at the factory rather than incur all the warranty claims? |

Honu - I think they switched midyear. |

>Honu - I think they switched midyear. I guess my point was what about all the bikes out there that still have the old part (and don't subscribe to Uly forums)? And not to hijack the topic, but it would nice to know the magic number of wireform failures before Buell was moved to come up with a stronger part and compare it to the number of wheel bearing failures. |

Here's what the new part looks like - I don't think it'll be breaking like the old one. Please excuse the dirt ... All the XT's I've seen came with this, while my '08 X did not. (Message edited by olenuf2nobetter on May 22, 2008) |

Put one on my '07 XB9R last week. This should be a standard goodwill fix anytime an XB is in for service. Cost me all of 11.00 or so. |

I've never adjusted the clutch on the Uly and my Bandit clutch was hydraulic...but the new part is sitting in the garage and I'd like to to install it today the "proper" way...by slipping the clutch cable end through the clamp rather then bending the prongs on the clamp "open" and then bending them closed again. What's involved with removing the clutch cable from the handlebar end? And any tips on readjusting the cable upon reinstallation? TIA. Tipsy |

Wrenches - 9/16" for the locknut and 1/2" for the adjuster. Method - Loosen the clutch cable adjuster to provide slack, remove the cable from the lever, remove the old wireform from the front mount, pull the cable down & out of the dash, slip off the old wireform, drop the new guide onto the cable (ensure correct orientation), replace cable, fasten new guide to front mount, adjust clutch cable, done. --- 08Uly Uly Data Page Leader Boards

If you need to adjust the clutch itself, take the clutch inspection cover off (the keyhole shaped cover) while your clutch cable is off the lever / not adjusted. Turn the screw in the center of the clutch pack in until it bottoms out lightly (do not crank down on it). Back it off 1/4 turn. Reinstall cover. Adjust cable as mentioned above. |

Well the dealer fixed me up nice and quick but they put a new old-style wireform thing. I guess it's good for another 700 miles, eh? I'd bitch but they fixed it fast without any fuss when it was in having the bags installed. I can't have it replaced unless it breaks first, right? |

I ordered the Strada bracket/clip a couple of days ago and fitted it today. There is no way this sucker is going to break!!! Thanks to Ian for his customary excellent service!!! |

I have used a similar mod as Strada's to keep things sweet until I get the Buell modded fix |

About the 08's and the new clip, there is a 08 XT on the floor at my dealer, built Apr 2008 with the new clip. It is safe to assume that the switch was mid April. All bikes before that got the paperclip and the ones after have the thing that looks like a crowbar. |

08Uly...thanks for the help! I installed the new style guide this morning. Piece of cake! Thanks for the instructions. For some reason, I thought removing the clutch cable would be more involved. Everyone should do this as a preventative measure. Tipsy |

Despite having the old style clip installed, I don't think it will break again. It's not under tension like it was before. It looks like the dealership reversed the "P" clamp under it so that the cable is more naturally routed away from the pipe. Just to be sure, I put a ziptie around the front engine mount and the cable loosely just in case it does break. I took the blue beast to Montreal and back this weekend and nothing broke after 750 miles. |

yep mine broke yesterday, 2500 mi. Heard a tingingting sound and searched till I found the metal wire form hanging and dangling. Thought I did something wrong when tralering last week, Now I realize its a defect. I will definitely wire tie tomorrow so I dont loose the clutch cable to the header..... Steve |
