Dear Buell Dealers: Buell Motorcycle Company is excited to announce the latest edition to the Buell family, the Ulysses Police XB12XP! This announcement is being made early to allow our dealers to start engaging customers and taking orders now for this exciting new product. Given their often extended procurement cycle, this early release information will allow public agencies to properly plan for the addition of a Buell Ulysses Police to their fleet later in the year. The new Ulysses Police will be available as a 2009 model-year vehicle, and production is due to begin in August. Shown as a concept vehicle at January's Winter Dealer Meeting, the Ulysses Police offers government agencies and private security firms a quick and nimble special duty patrol vehicle that is capable of travel over a variety of terrain, from open highways to city streets to unpaved back-country roads. XB12XP Ulysses Police Product Contents and Features Based on the versatile Buell Ulysses adventure sportbike, the Ulysses Police features long-travel suspension, generous ground clearance and aggressive tires that allow it to tackle roads too rough or narrow for confident travel in an automobile or on a traditional police motorcycle. On smooth pavement, the Ulysses Police is an agile sport motorcycle. The Ulysses Police can also accommodate a passenger. Special features of the Ulysses Police include new hard-shell top and side cases, each removable and lockable. The side cases are narrower than the standard Ulysses XB12XT side cases, allowing for more clearance in tight situations. On the Ulysses Police model the Buell Triple Tail system functions as a luggage rack with tie-down hooks over the rear seat position, or as a cushioned passenger backrest with grab rails. A tall windshield, heated hand grips, and wind deflectors are also standard equipment. Available for the Ulysses Police through P&A is an Emergency Response kit offering 3 different lighting color options. This package includes a siren system and LED emergency lighting ready for true plug-and-play dealer installation. The lighting package is available in 3 options: All red LEDs, combination red and blue LEDs, or all blue LEDs. We estimate the dealer installation time for the complete emergency equipment kit to be approximately two hours. The Ulysses Police will be offered in two color choices: Birch White and Midnight Black. I wonder if the thinner side cases would be available for purchase for non-LEO customers...? I'd like to be able to swap 'em out depending on my storage needs for a given trip. | ||

It's real. Found it on H-Dnet.com....might have to trade my FLHP Road King Police on the Uly Police, LOL. Gonna try and strongarm my GM into ordering one on Tuesday...purely for research and police demo purposes, of course! | ||

While I think it's cool to see Buell entering this market, I'm not optimistic we're going to see departments picking the Uly over the HD or BMW agency bikes. As hot as HDs get, I can't imagine sitting on an idling Uly in the Texas summer. I'm also curious as to what (if any) upgrades Buell will need to make to the electrical system. And where will you mount your machine gun?  | ||

one more comment and I promise I'll shut up (for now)... Buell obviously believes in the durability of these bikes to put 'em out on the agency bid lists. This also indicates that the XB line isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Woo hoo! | ||

The sheriff's dept around here uses DRZ's and the Uly might be a better bike for the job. Definitely would look a lot cooler. | ||

And where will you mount your machine gun? Same place you do on an HD or BMW - at the other end of the radio. lol. I think it has a good chance against the BMWs. Similar performance, similar riding style/position, and MUCH better maintenance schedule and parts supply. Ever try to replace a clutch on an RT/P? | ||

It would be cool if they were briefcase-size ... I'll have to check dimensions. I only use the top case for my commute, and the briefcase doesn't really fit so it gets bungeed. Lane splitting is not legal in PA, but the narrower clearance w/o sidebags is helpful in some situations to ease my commute, never mind avoiding the fuel economy penalty | ||

FYI re: dimensions, the Juniors are about 3" (8 cm) narrower than the Buell Journeys. He was joking (had a smiley) and it is a siren. Very soft dirt down that trail, I followed for one run and it was a little dicey but I had no problem. It was a little out of the 10% off road thing, but they were considering it for rescue use after hurricanes and the like. Sort of like the Daytona Beach FD and their HD baggers at Bikeweek but able to get around and over debris instead of through traffic. If that makes sense. I have no idea if they bought any Ulys (Uli?) or went with something like a klr or what happened. (Message edited by miamiuly on May 22, 2008) | ||

I think the only thing that will prevent this bike from being sold to a lot of police will be the lack of ABS brakes. One of the reasons HD put ABS on their police bikes was because contracts required it for police bikes. No ABS, no sale. It should be noted that Yamaha, and Honda also have police bikes, but they don't sell very many of them. HD and BMW own the lion's share of the market. Wayne | ||

ABS..... Risk Management for city I work for will not allow non ABS bikes.. They updated the fleet two years ago because of this.. Motorcycles from what I understand are usually leased, Some how its cheaper? Like wayne Said, no ABS no Sale! | ||

That is good news because I'm sure Buell knows that many public organizations require ABS...therefore the new feature for the 2009 Uly is.....A B S !!! Although I'll be sticking with my '06 Uly! | ||

ABS is required by *some* contracts, not all. Many motormen prefer non-ABS bikes. They're trained to slide the bike in certain situations, and ABS won't let you do that. Motormen (and women) are trained to brake at the threshold...so ABS becomes less of an issue than it is on a civilian bike (with civilian "training"). I wouldn't count on ABS being on the Uly just because of the LEO contracts.... | ||

Looking at the offical picture, I can't tell if they're totally different bags, or just flat lids. I'm hoping for flat lids, but the latching is totally different so it may not be an easy "S2-ish" narrow/wide bag swap. Also, looking at the front fender and it's clearance to the forks, and the relationship of the fork protectors to the dust seal (height-wise) it looks like it may be the XT suspension with the X fender set? But the spec says 47mm, which would imply X forks...hmmm.... It also looks to be a non-ABS bike. The front brake line follows the same contours/routing from MC to caliper, no signs of a "detour" to the tail section for a motor/pump setup. The FLs have a total detour for all the lines between the levers and the calipers, to go to a pump set under the side cover. (Message edited by ratbuell on May 23, 2008) | ||
