ive been told that the O.E. isnt a rebuildable shock. is this true? also does anyone know of a good replacement that can be rebuilt?

I'm not sure about a '97, but I am going through this on an '01. You can have RaceTech re-build your Showa for about $200. I called Works Performance in Cali. for their top of the line bolt on-$850.

Works Performance or Penske. I like my Works shock a lot. Much better than even the upgraded stock/recall-replace Showa.

There are some places that will rebuild the stock shock (Aftershocks, Race-tech), but I consider it to be throwing good money after bad. The stock shock wasn't all that great to begin with, the preload adjustments/locks totally suck, and of course they are ever so stylish.

Even the non-adjustible damping works shock ($659), when built per the riders weight and intended use (i.e. street, track) is better than the fully adjustable stocker, IMHO. For a couple hundred more, you can get full damping adjustment. another hundred more will get you a Penske, which adds adjustable rear ride height.

We don't keep them on the shelf, because if you're paying that much for a shock, it should be built for YOUR weight and usage. It typically takes 3-4 weeks to get one. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/6060.html

To each his own ...

I just posted about this shock on a different thread.

I have the Works Ultrasport. It worked fine for a few seasons ... now leaks.

As for the original Showa ... Al, I see your S1 still has the nice clean lines ;^)

So we have style or performance. Reality for me is ... if mine was not leaking, I still don't like the braided line and remote can so I recommend the non-adjustable.

thanks guys, im going to trust my mechanic on this one, i hear that his life is in suspension. and hes the one to trust. im supposed to talk to him today.

just to make sure what is the measurement on the rear shock for my bike?

I just ordered a Works Durasport for my 99X1. The Showa's been leaking for quite some time and finally bit the bullet and was bottoming out after taking a passenger for a ride.

I'll take Al's advise on the std Works being better than the OEMs. I don't hink I've ever touched the adjustment since setting it way back in '99.
I'll report my results in a month or so.

BTW... my passenger wasn't heavy, just think I lost most of the oil.
