Mike-

Thanks for the writeup!!! Being able to read everyone elses adventures makes me want to do more of them (it also helps me in my writing skills to be more descriptive and to take better pics).

Too bad that you didn't call from Charles City. Not only did you ride right past my house, you were camping just a few miles away. I would have brought you a couple of cold ones to loosen you up to talk about your trip.

If you're going to Homecoming we can meet up there and talk about it, over some cold ones of course.

Later, Iowa-Mike

Nice ride report.
I think we're killing your pic hosting site though, I'm getting less than a third of the pics to show up here. But the pics I'm seeing are making me want to go for a ride, maybe it's good not all the pics are showing up. ; )

Epic! Thanks for sharing Mike! One pic link had a typo and so didn't resolve. If you'll tell me the proper URL, I'll fix it for you. : )

Thanks guys!

I'm not the best at writing. But, I had several people tell/ask me to post it up anyways. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I know I did!

Mike,

Mannnnn, I was sooooo close to giving you a call! About 10 or 10:30 I was at the McDonalds grabbing a burger and thought about it, but was afraid it was too late to call! Then after finding out about breakfast plans on Sunday, I burnt out of there pretty early.

I hesitated to post this story, and after reading your great story about the trip to Idaho, decided to give it a go. I hoped that it could compare to your posting, and many of the other great postings that I've read over the years!

I doubt I'll make it to Homecoming this year. Mileage wasn't the only thing I underestimated! This trip put a hurting on my travel budget for the year! We'll see though, that's still a little ways off...

Blake,

Yeah, I copied that one incorrectly. I didn't keep that link. But, when I get home tonight, I'll redo it and send you the link.

By the way, I just realized that I had missed thanking you! Without this GREAT site, none of this would be possible!

I think that the posts on this trip probably more than doubled the total amount that I have posted over the last six years, or so.

It's never too late. I'm on call 24/7 so my wife is used to those late night calls. It was interesting when the first time one of our female dispatchers called me though

Some people (like Jerry Haughton) have a way with words that makes the associated pictures optional. Being married to a teacher my english skills are always improving.

I won't be headed out East anytime soon. My next big trip is going to have to be an Idaho/Washington/Oregon & California. I have been itching to do that for a long time but will have to wait until next year.

I rode 191 recently too. I also noticed all those "piles" on the road. As I was taking a break, here they come up the road.

I'm having trouble getting the photos to show up.
The first visit to the page seemed to work okay, since then I get maybe one or two photos to display, then they stop and I get the little red "x".

Anyone else having that problem?

I'd like this to be saved for posterity if at all possible. Mike you have email. : )

Yep, see earlier posting about possibly overloading his photo hosting site.

He might want to run the pics thru xat and upload them directly, if he's willing to do that or willing to have someone do that for him. Nice pics, when they all load.

Blake,

I zipped and sent those photos to you. I hope I didn't confuse you too bad! I have them listed by postings.

Let me know if you didn't get them though. They may not have gone through our filters here at work.

Mike,

Excellent! I've resized, compressed and got 'em all in place. The page should now load fine with every photo showing up for all who visit. Thanks!

Mike, great adventure and I enjoyed reading it and looking at the pics. I laughed a couple of times and think I actually got a little cold thinking about Mt Evans.

I have never done a trip that far on my T Bolt but I have been thinking about it. Great support from our friends on the BadWeb and if you ever do that again and go through Colorado let me know and I will provide you with a warm place to rest and a couple of cold ones.

Thanks for taking the time to post all the words and pictures...

Thanks Frank!

I'm still kind of bummed out that Mt Evans was closed though...

Oh well, maybe some day...

I knew it would kind of be a whirlwind trip as originally planned. But, with misjudging the mileage as bad as I did, I didn't have much time to stop, relax, and look at things. But, it still was a great trip! I was also surprised that I took about 300 pictures while zipping around like I was! It made it harder to decide which one's to post.

I'm amazed at the number of Badwebbers that I went right past!

I'm still a little surprised that I only saw two Buell's on the entire trip. One in Salt Lake (it was either an S1 or an M2), and one Uly in Fallon, NV.

I just about have the S2 ready to go again. I hope to finish tonight and take her for a test run.

Mike, you journey on the S2 is an inspiration to me. I took my S2 out for a 1000 mile weekend last week out to Moab Utah and other than dropping a front brake mount bolt somewhere over Monarch Pass it did great (Ace Hardware is my friend now).

I will take her out again this weekend down to NM in the Taos, Santa Fe, Red River area for another ride.

I have learned a couple of things and have started looking into ways to carry more stuff, a better selection of tools and some more heated gear. I also might get a little clock and GPS as well. I wired up a air pump just in case.....

I too will be going over the bike tonight to get her ready for Friday and NM..

BTW: Who is the maker of the tent you are using in the pictures?

Frank,

Eureka is the manufacturer of that tent. It does an OK job. It is very compact, but does pretty much rely on stakes in the ground. It's not for the claustrophobic though! It's kind of like a body condom for bikers! : )

I have been kind of looking at other tents though. My brother-in-law got a Coleman that isn't much more bulkier than mine is packed. It uses aluminum poles, and has a side entrance w/ vestibule. And, you can sit up in it. Where as mine you back into it and don't have much room to move once you're in it. But, it works! And, I have stayed more or less dry in it.

Good luck on your trip!

Mike

Mike,

Great story, beautiful bike too, by the way, and wonderful pictures. Thanks for taking the time to get it out here on BadWeb. Take a look at Mountain Hardwear tents. They are very expensive, until you're in 60mph winds on top of Mt. Whitney. Trust me on that one. If you watch any of the Everest movies that came out a few years ago, most of the tents, equipment and gear was from Mountain Hardwear. I learned about them when I was a volunteer with National Ski Patrol. Now here is the BadWeb scoop. Check out sierratradingpost.com or everestgear.com for deep discounts on that stuff. I used to get the pro deal and these two websites were sometimes cheaper. Mea culpas all around if one of the BadWeb sponsors sells tents.

Calidrew,

Thanks for the info on the tents. I'll have to look into those. That tent has done what I needed it to, but it is getting tired.

Thanks for your remarks on the story/bike by the way!

mike - great ride report! im doing a west coast trip in august on my xb- and you passed right through my hometown! Dexter Michigan, on your way to Hell (my folks live 10 miles from Hell) that area is my riding grounds..and in Ann Arbor (where I live) we could have found you at better nut than Kmart! Excellent trip, exciting to hear of such a large trip and you had Hell as a destination! Ride on!

That was an amazing feat of endurance you pulled! I am sure are very intimate with every nut, bolt and washer on the S2. I am glad you made it through the night riding.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Duckbuell!

The ol' S2 has been pretty good to me though (actually both it an the XB have been good bikes).

The nut attached to the handlebars is the biggest issue! : )

Great write up and sharp looking S2! I don't think I have the endurance for the trip you did, but I'd like to do something similar, just a bit less ambitious.

Again, I really enjoyed reading your adventure and looking at your photos.

One question, how did you get the photos with you in them? Did you take a small tripod?

Dyna,

Thanks! In hind sight it was too many miles in too few days! I wouldn't plan to do that again (of course I didn't "plan" to do it that way the first time).

On the photo's; It was just a fairly cheap digital camera. I used the self timer on it. I didn't have a tripod with me. I just looked for a rock, snow bank, picnic table, etc to put it on when I could. I think that is one reason why the picture at the Grand Canyon was blurry. I think it may have moved when it took the picture...
