So I am riding down the road today and out of now where i hear this metallic sound, sort of like chinkity clank, imagine a metallic sound.
Right when this happens i notice that the bike now vibrates heavily anytime it is over 3000 rpm. as soon as it gets to 2950 it goes as smooth as a babies toosh.
Any one have ANY IDEA on what could have happened?
It is an 2005 XB9R with about 2000 miles.

I am planning on changing the transmission fluid really soon, would it be more Advantageous to check everything out and make sure the metallic clank wasnt internal and being something breaking?
Also if I did that would I drain out the fluid and then take off the main big cover? Also if I opened up the cover on the left side, who many quarts of formula+ would I need to replenish it with?

Check your front motor mount.

Sounds like it might be the nut on the engine that holds the primary sprocket has loosened.

To repair this, you need to remove the primary chain cover, lock the front and rear sprockets together with a part available from American Sport Bike, and then torque the front nut to 250 ft/lbs. That is a lot, and requires a special torque wrench.

As far as the oil is concerned, it should be drained first, then the primary chain case cover is removed.

When filling, it uses just about one quart, especially if the primary chaincase has been removed.

The shop manual shows the correct level for the primary oil, and overfilling is to be avoided.

You do have the shop manual right? Don't start this job without one.

Also, be careful when replacing the screws on the primary, too much torque will strip the aluminum threads in the crank case.

With all due respect Sarge, when my front motor mount failed, I did not get those symptoms.

When my crank nut was loose, you would hear it as a kind of "ringing" with each engine pulse. I only heard it when the clutch was in and the transmission was unloaded... as soon as I loaded up the clutch it would go away.

Could just be primary chain tension by the sound, but the vibration over 3000 RPM sounds odd.
