Yeah, slightly embellished, but not far from the mark. Check the news. Hell, forget the 50's... half these hold true for the 80's! ~SM |

It's only going to get worse. The other day, a kid was playing in the street about 4' from the curb. He had a toy popgun rifle. When I drove by, he looked me in the eye and stamped his foot on the asphalt and gave me a sneer that said "Don't even think about stopping on my turf". This kid was pre-school...........no more than 4 years old. Where in the hell did he get that kind of attitude so quickly in life? |

I graduated in '99 as the last class of the millennium, at least thats what my yearbook, senior t-shirt, and graduation banners said. I argued with the principle that there was no yr "0" and therefore we were actually the penultimate graduating class but I think he got mad at me for using a word he didn't understand. Anyway, If I remember correctly in Elementary school my teachers all had paddles and could use them. By the time I reached about 5th grade we had to get permission slips from our parents to allow corporeal punishment and then it was the principal that could spank you. But if you brought a little pocket knife to school you only had it confiscated. No punishment, you just lost the knife. I guess there would have been trouble if anyone had used a knife on someone else but that never happened at my school. By the time I got to high school that of course was right out, no weapons-zero tolerance. After the Columbine shootings I was told that my army surplus trench coat was not allowed at school and teachers started watching all the goth kids. They put up fences around the student parking so that no one could go to their cars or leave during the day. And within 2yrs of my graduation students had to have see-thru backpacks, went through metal detectors every morning, and the school grounds entrance and exits were guarded. My neighbor is a supervisor with the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and from the stories he's relayed to me, I'd say it's not far off the mark. |

the slippery slope of sliding down hill is when a "life" sentence in jail really only amounts to about 7 years. |

A couple years back my daughter beat up the "neighborhood bully" at the bus stop in front of my house. After he cried all the way to the school`s Principal my daughter got 10 days of OSS and he got nothing for picking on her and starting the problem. 25 years ago when you got caught fighting your parents were called and they would punish or encourage accordingly. Usually the kids would keep it quiet and not cry about it.(especialy if you got beat up by a girl) |

Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. 1957 - Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock. 2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons. I went though this. Except instead of asprin, it was a Thomas Kemper rootbeer in a brown "beer" bottle. Some a$$hat maintenance person thought he saw me selling alcohol out of my vehicle. Actually I was sharing rootbeer. By the time it made it up to school official the story had morphed that I was selling coke (not joking). After being hauled in the put the screws to me, and the others there. Of of the more coercible classmates caved and said it was not drugs but ciggies. To this day I don't know why he did that. The school had no evidence that I was a dealer, but they did have a very strict no smoking policy. Being a private school they fined you $50 for smoking. I don't smoke, never have. They held suspension over my head the last day before finals, unless I agreed to the extortion. After discussing the repercussions with my folks. We agree just to pay it and move on. I did get a little justice when the administrators thought they had gotten me. That day I just happened to have a fat bankroll on me. I whipped it out, and slowly peeled off a crisp $100. I asked for change. After that they were convinced I was a dealer. |

In High School in the 60s, my classmates instigated one of the guys to fight me, by saying I had said something about him (I didn't). Being the kind of person to never back down, we got into it. He was a champion, light heavyweight, Golden Gloves boxer. I never saw any of the punches he hit me with. Since it wasn't a pure boxing bout I took hold of him and put a hurt on him. This happened in the middle of a classroom between classes. A teacher heard the commotion and came in and broke it up. We were both forced to clean the entire grounds and parking lots, together, after school. We became the very best of friends. |

2006: A friend of mine (a math teacher) steps between 2 high school kids beating the crap out of each other in the hallyway of a public highschool, and pulls them apart. He is sued for assault or something stoopid along those lines... |

Nobody picks on my lad at school, they all know that his dad is a British truck driver & the reputation precedes. The fact that I pick him up from school in an old '68 Dodge pickup with straight-thru exhausts helps the image too, mind you if the weather's good I go on the Buell. |
