Went to the Rock Store today to look at all the cool bikes with 4 friends. and then run up and down all the local canyons. The leader took us to a tight, I mean TIGHT twisty road, 1st. gear stuff and its one way only : ) no on coming traffic to worry about. Or so we thought. As we come around a blind corner two spandex clad roadies are cranking out a big gear, going the wrong friggin way.
Our leaders ducati 749 misses them. but the R6 in second position nearly hits them, gos wide in the turn and piles up into the rock wall.
The bicyclist flips us off and rides away.
I've seen roadies do some arrogant stuff before, like take up an entire lane. but this is a bit much.
Fortunately my buddy only got a minor scrap on the forearm and a sore shoulder. The bike lost a mirror, and cracked fairing.
Could have been much worse especially for the bicyclist.

Glad to hear your buddy is ok.

Those cyclists are damn lucky it wasn't a car. They would be hood ornaments - and would've had nobody but to blame but themselves.

If it doesn't have a motor the only place you should ride anything is in bed

Most cyclists are simply trying to keep from getting plowed, but some take it too far.

I try to respect cyclists as much as possible. I even pull the clutch and coast by so that I don't blast them out with my exhaust.

Last night, I saw two riders out 2 hours after dark riding Deal's Gap. Some aren't inconsiderate. They are retarded.

Darwin occasionally wears spandex.

Darwin occasionally wears spandex.

He sure does. He loves to wear bright yellow & orange around my favorite riding areas.

I've been spending every bloody weekend in Nance's backyard chasing some Benjamins.

I will be up on the BRP all day Tuesday and probably end up in DG.

I was on the BRP today. Got rained on. Sucked.

I did the road that runs up the mountain and dead ends at a dirt road. We took the dirt road back into Cherokee. Fun but spooky. Screw up and it's a long way down.

Desmo900,

You think meeting a wrong way cyclist whilst riding down Tuna Canyon road is bad; wait until it's a fire truck or other maintenance vehicle.

Teeps, Is Tuna Canyon one way only as well?
I think the road we were on is Stokes. I could be wrong, while trying to keep the Ducati's in sight I really didnt have time to look at the street signs much : )
And you're right, a fire truck would have ruined Everyones day.

I would have pulled out the cell phone and called the law, cyclist have to abide by traffic laws too. He would have had to pay for your buddies bike.

There is a guy at work that has been written tickets for speeding and running red lights on his bicycle.

Think I would have chased them down for a beating once they didn't stop.

Plus giving the finger.

I am not a brawler but they deserved a nice stick into the front wheel or something.

Nice reality check...I confess, I'm both-I ride a road bike in spandex, I ride mountain bikes in rough nasty hiking trails, and I ride motorcycles (Uly) almost every day commuting. I just love two wheels. Riding the wrong way and being rude to the folks going the RIGHT way, on 2 wheels no less, is just wrong. Did they realize the R6 rider crashed avoiding them? I would feel terrible about that. Pedaling doesn't make you right, it should make you careful! (and nice, since you can't exactly outrun anything with a motor ; ) It's all about surviving and having fun, and helping others do the same!

Only if you were hauling ass doing 40-50mph down that rain soaked gravel/mud road.

Sometimes Darwin rides a Ulysses! LOL!!

If I'd have fallen over, I could have jumped off and ran beside the bike I was going so slow. : )

Fat & Chad,
Exactly what road are you talking about (BRP/Cherokee)?
Sounds like a good candidate for me to try next time I am out on the Uly or KTM.

Very true! I just couldn't help myself. I got a sweet tank slapper started trying to keep it out of the ditch on the right and away from the abyss on the left.

Then something came to mind:

"95% of the time more throttle is the answer, 5% of the time it ends the suspense"

Rooster on! All better.

I hate to admit this but I think I would have probably pounded the guy rather than calling the cops.
Cause the crash and also flip the bird?

That's just asking for a steel toe in the ribs.

Arcticktm,

One road was Parsons Branch Primative Rd. from Cades Cove to US129.

The other was off the Blue Ridge up to Balsam Mt. The road ends, and there is a gravel road that brings you all the way back down to Cherokee.

Chad,
Thanks,
I have been down Parsons Branch and Rich Mtn from Cades Cove. These "primitive" roads were in better shape then the public dirt roads were in Michigan.
Nice ride, but the Cades Cove loop can push you over the edge with stop and go traffic!

I have not yet been on the BRP/Balsam Mtn road, so that sounds like one for the to-do list.

FT, do you know the dual sport rides in that area? I'll be up there next Friday and have the KLR-250 with me.

I'm looking for some fun rides, I think there is Parsons Branch off the dragon, and isn't there another one going off the Cherohola?

Reep,

I don't. I only rode these because our ride leader pulled them up. I'd love to hit more dirt roads on an even more dirt worthy bike.

My next bike will be a big single with knobbies.

Yes the cyclist knew they had caused the accident, it happened 5 feet from them. this road is very narrow, only 2ft wider than a car, and steep. by the time we could find a place to park, and get the R6 off the poor guy, the cyclist had taken off.
I was going to go after them, but realized in doing so, I would be going the wrong way too. One accident is enough for the day.

Is Stokes Cyn Rd a through road from Mulholland Hwy now? My map shows it as almost connecting Dry Cyn Cold Creek Rd.

Tuna is also a seriously steep one-way downhill trip with, I believe, 3 stop signs to keep hooligans like myself in check while doing silly dead-engine coasting contests. It's gotta be the steepest paved road in all of LA county. Why, I'll bet it's steeper than the 27% Avacado Mesa Rd in southern Riverside County.

But, you're right, I've encountered locals going uphill, the wrong way on Tuna, but in pickups, never anybody foolish to try it on a bicycle though.

Im thinking i must be mistaken about the road being Stokes. Everyones description of Tuna sounds like its the right one.
I love riding in this area.. but so many roads, so little time. : (
