On my way home the other night, my right wrist was feeling a ‘lil bit “spirited.” Leaving the line at the stoplight, I found out it’s VERY easy to do 52 mph in 1st gear and still have rpm’s left.

How do I know this you ask? Read on….

After beating the car on my left off the line, I see Mr. LEO in a parked SUV to my right. I immediately get off the gas, it’s a 40 mph zone, and stop at the next red light, preparing to make a right hand turn.

Heart pounding, because I KNOW I was over the posted limit, I look in my mirrors. The white SUV behind me isn’t the LEO’s. Could I have escaped his notice?

After complete stop, I make the right hand turn. I look in my mirrors again. I see a fuzzy white blur with flashing red & blue lights on top behind me. CRAP!

I pull over and begin the “ritual:”
-Turn off bike & put kickstand down
-Keep hands where he can see them
-Motion that I can’t hear & I’m going to take off my helmet
-Wait for positive acknowledgement that this action is approved & authorized
-Remove helmet & earplugs
-Ask LEO politely what the problem is & feign innocence
-Do my best acting to convey disbelief that my bike could ever possibly achieve 52mph in 1st gear and that I wasn’t aware I was going that fast
-Provide all paperwork LEO requests
-LEO informs me that my insurance card is expired. CRAP!

After running my plates, license, etc., etc. he came back to me and was nice enough to only write me up for the expired proof of insurance and tell me to please watch my speed. “YES SIR!”

Since only the insurance card was expired & not the policy, it amounts to a “fix-it” ticket for me, so I can live with that.

I had to scold my bike severely for nearly getting me in trouble for a 12 mph over violation after we got home. For all you 1125R owners, I swear these bikes are just TROUBLE waiting to happen!

I have good news on the Po Po front. Out of the last 12 month I have been pulled over 7 times for speeding but only received one ticket. The year before was far worse. I think police are trying to become more friendly.

Cutty72, is that at the rev limiter?

My 25r decided the other day to lift her front end accelerating onto the interstate. As I scolded her and put the front end down, there was a State Trooper wagging his finger at me. Guess he must have seen my sheepish grin (through my RF-1000) cause he just proceeded down the interstate with me following behind.

Guys,

Get a Passport or V1 radar detector. Get a HARD alert device in your helment. (heads up alert device.) NEVER ride without it.

I have those and a ZR3 shifter on my 1125r. The HARD in particular has saved me a LOT of tickets. You can get on the brakes before they get a lock, and if they are running a revenue trap, you know it's there a long time before you come upon it.

I think a radar detector and heads-up alert device are as important as safety equipment as a helment, leathers, boots and gloves.

sorry to burst your bubble Jdugger, but a radar detector will only tell you when you are getting a ticket. By the time you see the LEO, he has already made up his mind about you. Especially if he is using a lidar....I have picked off people more than 2/3 mile away. Radar, no need to lock it in, just get a reading on you is good enough...

Just $.02 from one of the "bad guys".

I know the radar detector has saved my butt because the officer has said as much. It's gone off as I was coming around corners and I got down to below speed limit speeds before the officer saw me. Most small town police don't have lidar, so you get plenty of advanced warning.

It really does help when a speed trap is being worked as you get an alert even several miles away.

I don't know if the laser jammer works or not... I've not come acorss lidar with it on yet.

I do my best NOT to speed in town at all. It's just way too dangerous with all the suburban cops out revenue raising all the time.

Glad to see I'm not the only experiencing the "Sudden acceleration in 1st gear" problem with this bike.

Maybe if it's documented by enough owners I can use it as part of my impending future defense. "Honest your honor. It's a flaw of the bike. I wasn't speeding intentionally." It's not a question of "if" but rather "when" with this bike.

Guess I'll just have to get used to performing the "ritual" on a more regular basis. Hmmmm....maybe put my license, registration & insurance in clear pockets on my back to cut down on time to find & let the LEO view?

And after reading about Zac scolding Loretta, I don't feel so bad about scolding mine.

I've got a couple of motor officer buddies who've both told me that if they pull you over and see you have a detector, you ARE going to get a ticket.

On the other hand, my city has a "no pursuit" policy with sport bikes. However, they DO have the fastest radios known to man.

Ahhhh, "the ritual." Agree with Tow, if they see it, you get a ticket. I had an IROC Z years ago and of course it had the same "problem" with maintaining the speed limit (surely the speedo was broken). Anyway, after several tix with the car I dumped the radar detector and had to rely on my cat-like reflexes to slow down in time.

Hwyranger-

There was a news story on about the 5yr-old 'move over' law in Iowa and how the police are fed up with the morons who won't pull over when they are supposed to. One of the news clips was of a buddy of mine with a semi trying to 'dust' him. I mentioned it to him that next time I saw him and his wife together. He said "Shh, she hasn't seen it".
The video was great of him hopping in his squad car to go after the trucker.
Instead of just fining these morons I'd like to see the law say that you could impound their vehicles and make them walk home. It's not much different than how some vehicles treat those of us on cycles.

A Florida senator just bought a new Corvette and got on I-75 to try her out.

He cranked the new baby up to 80 and was grinning big time.

Up to 120.....
Blue lights in the rear view mirror

Pulled over and the LEO asked the usual. Know why I pulled you over etc..

The Senator asked how he could get out of this being a Senator and all.

LEO said: "If you can come up with an excuse I've never heard before, you're free to go"

The senator thought about it for a while...

...
"My wife ran off with a Highway patrolman years ago and I thought you were trying to return her"

Highway patrolman said: "You're free to go Sir"

Mike,

Yeah, here if someone decides not to stop "Go to jail, go directly to jail. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200". Now if they are stupid enough to go reckless as they try to run, felony.
Nothing is faster than the radio, and in my area, airships are always ready.

I don't understand people who run...a simple speeding ticket is a hell of alot cheaper. running a stop sign is more expensive than 85 in a 65 ticket, go figure, the 85 guy is the one who runs...

me....I tried to run once (in 1972) while a teen driving my folks 72' Satelite Sebring...
BUT, the guy "chasing" after me was long haired and unshaven....unmarked car

I did all I could to get him off my tail without running stops....speeding only...nothing over 50 in residential area

Finally pulled over (about 2 blocks from my house) and got out to confront him....

showed me his badge

undercover narcotics cop from across the bay....just read me the riot act

went home and my mom was on the phone with my dad's secretary...he was in Japan on business (shipping company).

Secretary called about a telegram that my dad sent saying he could get me a '72 Yamaha R5C for about $350 (no shipping charges)...and asked if I wanted it...my response was YEAH

less than 5 minutes later....phone rang, mom answered...it was the cop who chased me...

no ticket, but what an ass chewing!

(still got the R5C though...my first bike)

Running is stupid. Why turn a $200 traffic ticket (a civil offense!) into a Felony that ruins your life forever?

Radar detectors do work, and it's not true that they ensure a ticket, though many cops will write you a ticket if you have a detector. We got warnings this weekend in Arkansas, and the cop even suggested that the devices don't work.

During the stop, he proposed a test, and aimed his radar gun away from our bikes and turned it on. This officer was a radar instructor, and he had been taught that there's a "cone of signal" from the gun and unless the gun is pointed at you, a radar detector won't work. Of course, the detectors went off like crazy even being out of the aim because of reflections and radiation. What the vendors of radar speed trap equipment don't tell officers they train is a LONG, LONG list.

There's a lot of misinformation around radar and speed detection. The best source of knowledge is to find a EE familiar with microwaves and start asking physics questions. There are the FACTS -- that microwaves are electromagnetic radiation and are subject to certain well known laws of physics, and then there's the spew both officers -- who are experts in law enforcement and NOT electronics or physics -- and radar detector companies put forth.

hmmm....

the officer who thought the detectors would not go off because the gun wasnt pointed in that direction was, for lack of a better term, a MORON

What I was saying about radar detectors only telling you when you are going to get a ticket is because unless I have the device transmitting, the detector has nothing to detect...When I see the violator, I estimate the speed to be one that would be fun to catch up to (cops like to drive REALLY fast), so I point, shoot and get instant reading, I can then watch as the person with the detector slams on his brakes because he has been warned. I get to watch the speed reading on the device go lower and lower as the vehicle slows down...added benefit for the officer is it shows a tracking history and verifies that the violator's vehicle IS the vehicle the radar device was obtaining a reading on.

If an officer has the device transmitting all the time, well he either is incompetent, or he is not too interested in making stops, just getting people to slow down...See a cop, slow down...radar detector goes off, slow down...

It is a lot of fun to take people out on ride alongs for the shift because their eyes are opened big time after seeing exactly what we do.

> If an officer has the device transmitting

When they are running speed traps is when a radar detector really, really helps. They will scan cars from time to time as they go by. Your detector picks up those signals.

And, with moving radar, cops will leave it on as they drive so it can get someone as they come over a hill, etc. Again, that's where a detector pays off.

Detectors aren't 100%. But, mine has paid for itself several times over and again. They do work, and used correctly, do more than just tell you that you are getting a ticket.

Now, there's something else in the water here that I don't understand. You say your device tracks speed history. Yet, I've had a couple of different officers tell me I got below the limit before they got a lock on me. At least in Texas, they can't ticket without a lock. So, I got warnings in both cases.

I'm talking radar here. Laser is a whole different ball game.

Funny you say that, Hwyranger. I thought I wanted to be a cop once but after many, many ride alongs I found the sitting around doing pretty much nothing a little bothersome. Being a tax payer, it just started to piss me off. That was in Oregon though, California, I'm sure, is different.

You are spot on about the radar! That is indeed fun to see. I saw a fella go from close to 90 down to 45 so fast I don't know what kept him from going side ways. We were laughing so hard we let him go. I think he must have pissed himself.

"sitting around doing pretty much nothing"
well, depending on the area, that can happen. In SoCal, not a possibility in the slightest...too many calls to sit around. It also sounds like you might have had one of the less proactive officers to ride with. I get too bored doing nothing, so I'm out mixing it up whenever I'm not out on a call.

90 down to 45, I would have loved to see that one.

I'd like to say as ex-law enforcement, there's something called officer presence. At times, it seems like we're doing nothing, but sometimes we're doing exactly what we're supposed to be doing. Officer Presence. Sitting is boring, but a boring day is a day you go home to your loved ones. Enough of that though.

Oh, of course. I did a bad job of representing my point.

Here in the suburbs of Dallas, everyone drives above the speed limit. For example, the speed limit will be 60, and traffic will be moving along at 70-75. And, I mean *everyone*.

Well, the cops in the suburbs adjacent to Dallas will sit at the city line and just pick cars off like fish in a barrel and revenue raise. The fact that driving the speed limit would be dangerous to everyone since it would be disruptive to the flow of traffic is not important.

That's what I mean... DANGEROUS.

well guys, i just got home from a 1000mile round trip in 2.5 days, and at about mile 850 i was pulled over because my bike won the race! if anyone is familiar with the dodgeville/platteville area in wisconsin on hwy 151 this is where it happend. there are several long steep hills in that area. there was very little traffic and i had been riding for a very long time( on the stock seat mind you!) and i had my throttle wrist locked down so that i was doing about 74 and well, no traffic, so i didnt bother letting off for the decents... aparently i was doing over 100 down one of these hills and the cop lazerd me from behind and locked on at 97mph in a 65! now i have a $312 ticket, a court date and the polite officer informed me that the judge usually gives a day suspension per mph over the limit. oh ya, and 6points on my record! what a glorious day!
