People have been putting oil and fuel in frames for a very long time. I saw that show in the guggenheim way back when and they used the frame for just about anything you can think of at one point or another. |

quote:Motorcycle frame having integral fuel storage unit and break-away steering head Patent no 6484837 Abstract The present invention includes a motorcycle frame that has a steering head and a fuel storage unit that is adapted to contain motorcycle fuel. A separating wall is disposed between the fuel storage unit and the steering head to substantially prevent fluid communication between the fuel storage unit and the steering head. The steering head includes a stress focusing structure for separating the steering head from the fuel storage unit and leaving the separating wall substantially intact to contain fuel within the fuel storage unit in response to a predetermined force being applied to at least one of the steering assembly and the front wheel.

Are there even any Derbi dealers in the US? I could not find a dealer locator on their site... |

A neighbor had a Derbi scooter for sale. My wife was interested until she saw how much he wanted. I thought that $2,600 for a $4,000+ machine didn't sound too bad. |

That Sachs Madass that was posted recently also has fuel-in-frame, in case you missed it.

Not to disrespect Buell or the patent office, but I believe fuel in frame is not new nor an American invention--Honda Trail bikes have had it since the 1960's. This one is a CT70 from '71:

Note: the Buell patent specifically defines the break-away steering head for safety without tearing open the fuel tank. NOT claiming fuel in the frame. |
