Last night when I was on the way home and pulled up to a stop light I always down shift. It locked up in second or 3rd.I got it loss before the light changed.This morning on the way to work it locked up in 3rd comeing up to the light.It stayed there.Is this a problem with older buells?What should I look for when I tear it down? 1998 S1,63,000 miles. | ||

I am going to guess the shift star came off the drum. And if I am right, the pins that the shift star fit on to backed out, pushing the clip off. That's if the shifter is locked up, too. If it still goes up and down, but no shifty, I'm going to say broken shifter "claw" or detent arm. | ||

there is a circlip that holds the star on the drum ( behind the clutch ) look there. ( you can check the other too ) there are pins that can work loose in that area too. | ||

I opened it up yesterday and the first thing I see is the plasic chain adjuster is 1/3 gone.Brocken off and ground to dust. I cant see anything else.I just ordered a clutch removal tool and new clutches since they are origonal.When I get the clutches out I should know more. | ||

You don't need that tool. Pull the circlip that retains the adjuster plate, and unscrew (LH thread) the nut under there. You'll have to lock the clutch basket to the primary drive with a steel wedgeplate, about 3 inches long. It's only 80 ft-lb. If you have air gun, it'll zip right off. The whole thing will come off, no disassembly required. The bastard is the front sprocket. It should be 250 ft-lb. Air will take it off, too, but you'll need to lock it to retorque it. | ||

Well, duh, I reread and see that you want to replace clutches, so you do need that tool any way. My fault. I'll bet there's alot of nylon shavings wadded up in the clutch basket, too. |
