Monday morning (5/19) I'm heading from Albuquerque, NM to Pasadena, CA for a big robot conference for three days. Then Saturday morning (5/24) heading N through CA, into OR, then E to ID, back through NV, UT. Riding alone; my preference. Mostly camping. On parts of this trip (e.g. Great Basin) I am gonna in the middle of NOeffingWHERE! Midway through the ride the '06 Uly will turn over 50,000 miles. It's been bulletproof so far...hope it continues. Ride report will be on ADVrider.com eventually...wish me luck. |

The only problem I can think of for your trip would be the heat. It has started getting quite warm here in San Jose, so the central valley in California will be pretty toasty! Stick to the coastal routes for cooler temps! Have a blast man! Good luck! |

It's just Pre-trip jitters. Your Uly will be fine, and you'll have a great trip. Wish I could do something similar. I'll just have to be content with knowing that in six weeks, we'll be heading out for Homecoming. |

There is nothing like riding through Death Valley at night to make you ponder the reliability of your Buell. I did the reverse of your trip about 6 months ago. If you've never seen Death Valley, it's worth it. |

Dr Greg, I feel your concern. I'm about to head out on my "lap" of the US tomorrow. Looking at about 7800 miles by the time I'm done. My warranty just ran out so it will be out of pocket for a major breakdown. At least I have a riding partner for the trip. I've done 3500 in the last 4 weeks and it is running stronger than ever. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us. BTW I'll be tripping 40,000 at the end of this trip. |

Shoot you start worrying about your brand new rental car in the middle of Death Valley. They have tanks of water by the roadside for refilling your radiator. I thought about taking a picture of the Uly next to one. Do you have a route planned Dr_greg? |

Look at it this way, it's a win-win situation. If your Uly proves reliable, it'll be a great trip and another milestone for Buell ownership. OTOH, if the Uly conks out, it'll make for an even more interesting ride report with the tale and photos of improvised roadside repairs, walking miles through the wilderness to find help, etc. (Knocking on wood on your behalf now....) |

I was on a long trip last year on my ULY and was in Bryce Canyon,Utah when the fuel pump quit...the tow bill to the nearest dealer was $560..Progressive Ins. paid the bill...at todays gas prices WOW...they charged $4.00 per mile from Rubys Inn, Utah.(140 miles) to Hurricane Utah..Get roadside coverage ..its dirt cheap...I was glad it did not break down a few days later as we were in Area 51 on the Extra Terrestrial Hwy and then Death Valley...Awesome stuff... |

Well, I forgot to get roadside coverage, so the Uly REALLY better be reliable. I'm entering this using iPhone so I'll not be too wordy. At 48K miles she's using a little oil, but not much. I'll post link to ADV ride report when I start it. So long for now; an IPA is waiting for me at the lunch break. Doc |
