Bought the repack kit for the V&H from American Sport Bike and when I pulled the core out I'm not able to slide the new packing on it b/c this flange or w/e is in the way. Tried to pull it out but didn't want to break anything, it almost looks fixed to the core. Instructions don't show that flange attached and say to just slide on the new packing and pull the cardboard tube out. Any ideas??

Haven, Don't do what I did. I tried to force it over the flange and ended up splitting the packing open. To make a long story short, once it was split open,I tried to re-wrap it around the core and hold it in place with Duct Tape while I used a wooden ruler to help stuff it into the can. Not fun! I got it about 3/4 of the way in before it finally jammed, and would move no further. I ended up cutting some of the packing off to get the last two inches of the core back in. The first time I started the bike, a 10 foot strand of wool shot out of the muffler, then another, then another. They finally stopped and now the bike is just as loud or louder than when I started. I can't tell you the right way to do it, but this is for sure the wrong way to do it. I hope someone has had better luck as I'm tempted to try it again next winter if I can find a way to do it correctly. |

I haven't actually done it with the V&H repack kit, I changed from V&H pipes to Supertrapps before repacking was necessary. But I've talked with a number of customers that have, and the suggestion that I have is: Tape the cardboard tube to the core baffle, and apply the tape over the ends of the perf panel where it is welded to the ring so that the sharp corners can't rupture the bag. I hear it's a bit of a PITA, but with patience, most get it in. |

Alright I give that a shot, thanks! |

Well it was a PITA, but WOW I didn't know what I was missing. Mid-range to top-end power are totally different now and the bike doesn't shake all around at idle. Best $25 I ever spent. |

I did the repack kit from American Sportbike also. It was a huge pain to get it crammed into the pipe. It took hours and several tries. The packing material is a continuous strand that began to stream out my tailpipe on the first ride. Every time I stop I have to tear of 50 feet of string that is hanging off my tailpipe, wrapped around my rear wheel, etc. I have to assume it will keep on until the muffler is empty again. What a sad waste of my time and money. If anyone has figured out how to stop the string, please post! |

5 years later...I got the Drag Specialties muffler wrap kit from the Motorcycle Superstore w/free shipping for $14. Rewrapped the Vance & Hines, per the Supertrapp online video, on my 2000 M2. Like Haven 564, I was pleased and impressed with the sound and performance of this simple maintenance project. Al |

Change the core to one with smaller holes?

Awhile back I had a V&H that had the packing going out. I also found some leftover ceramic insulation that is used to insulate boilers and piping. Wrapped a bunch around it and used SS wire to hold it. I did last as long as I had it. It did make the muffler so much better as far as noise and the engine did respond better. |
