Hmm, doesn't sound all that good. What were you doing just prior to it starting that? It's still running smooth, but I wouldn't rev it too hard, or start it until you at least pull the rocker cover off the head making that noise. Pushrod maybe, also drain your oil and look for sparkles, make sure it isn't something more serious. Could be a lack of oil somewhere as well. (Message edited by blackm2 on May 10, 2008) | ||

to mechanical sounding to be an exhaust leak. Sounds like a pushrod tapping away. Which may be a lifter that has gone sour. | ||

I am with Loki on this one. Sounds like a pushrod or lifter. One way to check is to take a log screwdriver and hold the tip to the motor (lifter or pushrod) and have the other end pressed to your ear. You will hear the difference and will be able to determine which one has gone bad. Frank  | ||

Lifters. Without a doubt. Have checked oil pressure with a mechanical guage? | ||

To answer your questions - no I haven't checked oil pressure with mechanical gauge. I have been running castrol 20W50 synthetic V- Twin oil in bike. | ||

Mofbro, before you do any thing else take a very good look at what comes out of your oil filter. My 2000 X1 had a similar noise, it was Rod Bearings. Look for glitter in your oil. And run a magnet through the oil in the pan to see if anything gets picked up. | ||

mine was front rod bearing twice. once on s1, once on s2. same noise, misdiagnosed the first as valvetrain ending up with broken rod through front of case(3" hole). second time i shut it down before it went that far. bring it to Fireman Jim and Terry. good luck with all. tim | ||

"Sounds like a pushrod or lifter." I had bent pushrod that caused a horrible knocking noise only when the bike warmed up. It was like that when brand new and was fixed under warranty. Don't know why the pushrod was bent... neither did the dealership that fixed it. | ||

I know for a fact that a stock set up valve train can still bend a pushrod. Happens when it get over revved. Zipper's pro taper pushrods are a good replacement. | ||

I have the same problem, but not all the time, sometimes it disappears in certain rpm's. I'm almost sure it is the rockers who are pounding against the underside of the rockerboxes. You have to grind a bit off. | ||

Drained and checked oil: Didn't see any metallic speckles... Probed around a little more trying to pinpoint sound using screwdriver against ear...not sure of my skill with this method however, noise was observed loudest with tip of screwdriver placed on intake manifold. Didn't hear any bad sounds per se at pushrod tubes. Still not sure wherein lies the cause of metallic noise but ticking sounds like it is emanating from top of engine. | ||

after i swapped out the top end the noise was softer and i almost rode a different bike home then about 8 miles later i knew i should have pulled into that gas station, but said f-it and tried to make the 5 miles home. a mile down the road-boom- no more go. improper decision. hope yours goes better. i swapped motors from the track bike after repairing the track bike motor and on the s2 i picked up an m2 motor from another badwebber. tim | ||

I knew a guy that made a mistake and allowed a small screw to get in the engine. It made the same sound. The screw had been driven into the top of the piston and was hammering away at the head. | ||

I pulled a cylinder head on a slant 6 at a junkyard once, and found the broken-off tip, about 3/4" long, of a phillips screwdriver. There was a "+" in the cylinder head, and one shattered piston! I still have that tip. | ||

When my neighbor's S3 sucked in a screw, it made much more noise than that. However, that is not a happy motor sound. Figure out what is causing it (soon) and fix it. | ||

Mofbro, go with oil pressure test first. That will tell you if the rod bearing is bad(you will have almost no oil pressure after warm up). If all checks OK narrow it down to which cylinder is the problem (compression test may help) and pop the rocker box. GOOD LUCK. | ||

One thing that may help with your troubleshooting is that the valve train runs at half the speed of the engine. Joe |
