Mike, I forgot to thank you for breakfast. I appreciate it. Glad you could make it up for a ride. Both me and the bike needed that! Later...

Were I thinking at the time, I would have taken some shots of the disassembly process. It wasn't until we started putting it back together that I thought to break out my camera. Here are some random reassembly shots:

Back together and idling:

On the way home I spotted these marvels of modern art. They appear to be large wooden dolphins.

I don't know either.

Just got back from a shakedown run. Saw an Orange Uly headed north as I pulled onto 440 south. I turned around and tried to find him, but was unsuccessful.

I like the extra torque. 4000 rpm = 75 mph now. Low speed is much better. I think this will be good.

Jim- cool to see you finally got the mod done. You should post a full report (install & results) here and advrider.

You missed the one photo I wanted to see- somebody pulling a torque wrench to ~210 ft-lbs on the crank nut!

Less pulling, more pushing! I was winded after the torquing, and I they had me torque it to 250ft/lbs! I practically had to stand on it to make it click, makes my crank nut's 190ft lbs seem simple!

Hugh, I'll try, it was more complicated than I expected. I've never heard of anyone needed to use a press before, but we sure did. Perhaps I just haven't read close enough.

Sportymark- Wow, I had forgotten that the torque was even higher. Hopefully the new bolt deal on the 08's doesn't require Gorilla-type torque.

Jim- what did you need the press for?

Hugh - we couldn't get the sprocket off the rotor. I don't know if they had to use a press to get the new one on. I wasn't there at the time.

the bolts pulled the new one into place. If we kept wacking at it with the hammer it would have come loose. It didn't take much from the press. Still was a lot easier.

Scroll down...

June 14th and 15th Bubba Blackwell will be at Collier H-D in Roanoke Rapids, NC to help celebrate their 3rd Annual Birthday Bash. The latest Behind Barz magazine has a full page ad. Saturday is supposed to be stunts followed by the BIG jump on Sunday.

It's kind of funny that it's a H-D only dealership and the 2 bikes the ad shows Bubba doing wheelies on are Buells (a Blast! and a XB12S).

If I were going to be around that weekend I would check it out to see the BIG jump.

The reason I won't be around that weekend is that on Saturday, June 14th I will be leaving New Bern heading for East Troy for Homecoming arriving on June 15th (Father's Day). But Homecoming doesn't start until July 2, you say? Well, once I get to East Troy I will store the XT-BOLT at my buddies place and I will fly to Berlin, Germany for work for a week and a half. My goal was to be able to take in the 9th annual BORG MSM from June 27th - 29th. You might remember my pictures in the Tale Section from last years trip. Since the MSM is mere days before Homecoming, after the MSM I will fly back to Milwaukee just in time for Homecoming. As of right now 2 Germans are coming over for Homecoming, but that number may increase. So it looks like I will be a tour guide at Homecoming again this year.

Unfortunately this means that I will be unable to take in this years Smoke Out. So Sportymark and Xb9ser, I'm relying on the pictures that you guys take at the Smoke Out to make me feel as if I were there. But, if it's any consolation for me, since I won't be able to make the Smoke Out I will have to check out what's happening in Germany that same weekend - Hamburg Harley Days. I guess that will make up for having to miss the Smoke Out.

About 6 months ago or so someone proposed an iron butt ride. And timing & potential destinations were being tossed out for public consumption. The last I remember reading was that Homecoming was the last suggestion for the iron butt ride. Due to my travel schedule home for Homecoming, the only possibility for me would be to do it leaving Homecoming headed back to NC. Is anyone still considering an iron butt ride? Since the race schedule looks worthwhile on Sunday and, if last year is any indication, Buell will probably show us the big new 2009 model(s) Sunday afternoon it looks like I will be staying at home for Homecoming through Sunday. This would mean the only time I would be able to do it is coming back from Homecoming leaving East Troy on Monday, July 7th (my Dad's birthday). So is anyone still up for an iron butt ride leaving Homecoming? And, if so, does this timing work for those interested?

That was a mouthful!

Brankin, it sounds like you will have a wonderful time.

I won't be at homecoming this year because it falls during my time with the kids this summer. I'd do the Iron Butt with you if I was up there. It's 940 miles from Kenosha, to Raleigh, so it's a good distance. There are some documentation requirements from the Iron Butt people. I don't have them handy, but you'll need a witness for the start and end of your trip, and gas receipts. If you can get someone to do it with you, I believe you can be each others witnesses.

Also don't you want to polish my header? yours looks pretty nice!!

Yep, back at home where it belongs. As much as I'd love to make it back to Suches this year, I don't think we can commit to it right now. If something changes I'll let you know.

That's the original. VIN# 425393. The one I uncrated myself back in October of '03. That header was originally polished on a buffing wheel while it was off of the bike, but S100 and elbow grease will get nearly the same effect. I won't make any promises about polishing yours, but you never know what might happen if your bike is left in my garage overnight. Just ask Jim Nance. ; )

Spike,

Congrats on 'getting her back'! That sure makes for a unique ownership story.

I predict that you keep that Firebolt for many years to come and will have plenty of other cherished experiences with it.

Glad I'm off the hook of finding the part you would've needed if you bought a different Firebolt, though.

But ecstatic for you still!

My bike shifts like butta : )

The new clutch cable is nice too. I've been told they stiffen up over time, and new new ones are lined with a polymer. It is surprising how much of a difference it makes. If you've got a cable thats a couple years old, you might want to consider it.

Question for you all. I started the bike this morning, and the light that tells you it's ok to start it never went out. I could hear the fuel pump running. I tried to start it for a sec and it wouldn't run. I cycled the kill switch off and then back on, and this time the light went out like it normally does, and the bike fired right up. I've started it two times since then and everything it normal. Is my fuel pump going out, or was it some transient grimlen?

Monkeys. Poorly-trained monkeys. That's the best explanation at this point.

Here's the list so far:

The correct oil capacity for an XB is 2.5 quarts. I don't know exactly how much was in there, but when slightly warm (not hot) the oil level on the dipstick was covering the word "overfilled". I removed at least half a quart to get it down to the correct level.

I have no idea what the correct torque spec is for the various torx bolts on the bike, but if I can't break them loose with my normal torx driver and have to use a torx bit on a ratchet it's safe to say you've overtightened them.

I understand that the primary chain tension is not an exact measurement, but more of a range. Zero free-play is outside of that range.

If you remove the base plate of the airbox, you'll notice that the breather hoses naturally cross each other before turning 90 degrees upward and going into the airbox. If you force them to uncross and have each one go through the closest hole in the airbox you'll be bending the rear hose more than 90 degrees, which puts a kink in it. Don't do this.

While you're in there moving the base plate of the airbox around, you may notice that the bottom of the velocity stack has a rubber flange on it with a channel just the right size to fit around the hole in the bottom of the airbox. This is not there on accident. It's there to seal the bottom of the airbox to the velocity stack and throttle body so that unfiltered air is not drawn into the engine. If you just smash the bottom of the airbox on top of this rubber flange it won't seal properly.

The seat. I'm not even sure of what to say here. I think nearly every motorcycle seat on the planet attaches in the same manner. There is a tab towards the front of the seat that must be inserted first, then there is some type of hardware or latch that secures the seat at the rear. I imagine that there are some motorcycles somewhere that don't use this method for attaching the seat, but clearly those are the minority. I don't actually know what went wrong in the seat attachment procedure, but the clip that the seat tab slides into is gone. Not the tab on the seat, but the clip portion that was *welded* to the subframe. How you break the welds on an aluminum subframe with a plastic seat is beyond me.

I think that covers it for now. Fortunately, everything was simple to rectify aside from the broken seat clip on the subframe.

Thanks! If you look through the classifieds here and some of my other posts you'll notice that I've toyed with the idea of selling it for something else before, but always backed out and decided to keep it. Now that I've actually gone through the trouble of selling it and buying it back, I figure I should consider it a permanent resident. Next time I want to buy another motorcycle I'll just have to save up for it because the Firebolt isn't going to be sold again.

I was thinking about it after feeling how smooth you new cable was. Now that I'm back on a pre-'06 clutch, I'm definitely thinking a new clutch cable is in my future. My throttle feels a little grungy too, I might go ahead and do all the cables at once.

I noticed that your fuel pump ran longer than I thought it should back in November when I borrowed your bike. When I rode it on Saturday the fuel pump came on when I cycled the kill switch and stayed on until I started the bike. On every other XB I've ridden the fuel pump is very consistent at only running for 2-3 seconds before it stops and the engine light goes out. It's so consistent that I assumed the pump was actually running on a timed cycle, rather than priming to a certain pressure. Yours definitely runs longer than other XBs, so something is up. If I get a chance I'll skim through the service manual to see if anything pops up.

Spike- congrats on getting your Firebolt back. Man, hearing crap like you found reminds me of why I absolutely HATE to let someone else work on any of my vehicles.

Jim- that's a weird one. I think I'd assume "one time is a fluke". If it repeats, then I'd worry. Maybe the kill switch just wasn't completely in the "on" position until you cycled it.

Jim N, Spike, I'm also thinking about a new clutch cable. My 03's is also getting stiff, and just lubed it before the Badness. How much are they charging for these new and improved cables? I would like to have one, but like everyone I know, I've been squeezing the dollar lately.

Last I checked they were over $30, but it's been a few years since I last purchased one. I'm sure Jim N. knows a more current price. I'll find out for myself this weekend.
